Let’s talk about SMART objectives.
Leadership in this war needs to promulgate between 2 and 6 SMART objectives to drive all the other planning. An objective is a Flexible, High level action statement that specifies what our operations should do to accomplish defined problems. It reflects the priorities of high command and our political leaders.

S – Specific. Both the verb, and the object of the verb should be specific. Example: Stop the enemy vs Destroy that armored battalion.

M - Measurable in amount and area. Example: Destroy that armored battalion vs Degrade that armored battalion by 50%

A – Action oriented (sometimes Attainable). These should be doing something about the problem. Should someone be researching 5th generation fighters. Absolutely. Does that solve our problem today? No.

R – Realistic. Can it be done? With the resources we have? A great objective would be to drive the PLA off South America, but a better one would be to drive them off a small, attainable portion.

T – Time specific. Degrade that armored battalion by 50% vs. Degrade that armored battalion by 50% over the next two sorties/over the next 12 hours/before they reach the bridge/etc.

These simply need to be in textual form and should be professional rather than conversational (though I can tweak for that).

Some real world examples:

Buen Día everyone. I appreciate all your support and hard work to keep our troops fighting and resisting the Occupiers. The heavy fighting in the recent days has caused an increase in casualties, and as a result we need to establish some designated medical centers. My medical staff have identified locations on both sides of the theatre that can support a division level Role 3 Medical center. The problem is that we don't have enough staff specialized in treating the kinds of acute trauma and other wounds you see on the battlefield locally, or the supplies to get them providing the best possible level of care. Please refer to the two designated locations attached.

I have been informed that their supplies have been palletized, the volunteer staff are ready, and that all we need is a large jumbojet charter flight from Porto Alegre to the front line to get our Role 3 medical centers open. Half of the supplies and passengers are to disembark in Rio Gallagos, and the other half are to disembark in Puerto Natales. I leave the details of arranging these flights to our Air Mobility Officer Crab.

The Argentinian I Brigade is to be loaded onto heavy haul trucks, as many as the military logistics can manage, with the rest supplemented with civilian heavy haul trailers meant for heavy construction equipment. Given the proximity to the capital and major population centers, enough commercial/industrial trucks should be able to be contracted and mobilized for a mass convoy to Rio Gallagos down Highway 3. Civilian policing authorities will enforce temporary shutdowns of the highway as the brigade convoy moves along. A train is to be loaded with fuel and sent to the Terminal at San Antonio Oeste, and will provide fuel for the convoy if they require it at that midpoint. They are to make best speed to Rio Gallagos, with about 22-26 hours of driving. The onloading, convoy management, etc. will add at least 2 days to the start, and offloading will take about a day on the other side. The brigade will deploy to HWY 255 once they're ready.

The remaining Reinforced Regiments of the Chilean 5th Division are to deploy to support their comrades on HWY 9. The light infantry will stick to the favourable terrain, and the mechanized and armor will cover the more wide open areas

In the naval aviation tradition, there are a great number of customs and rites of passage handed down from our fellows and which honor our shared heritage. However, few are as beloved as that of the MUTHA. It is a glass-encased Japanese animal figure, or Tanuki, with a hideous face and eyes that constantly flash. At her side, a baby sports an oversized set of testicles. The MUTHA may only be a small Shigaraki raccoon figurine, but it has traveled the globe and into outer space, been carried proudly by naval aviators for decades, and actively fought over by some of the best pilots in the world. It is a trophy that has come to stand for aviation excellence, leadership, and fighting spirit.



With this heritage in mind, I am now instituting a weekly challenge competition for our naval aviation pilots. After each mission, one aviator may be awarded the privilege of safekeeping our own MUTHA figurine (whose origin remains a fiercely-kept secret). The principal metric for selecting this honored pilot shall be success during take-offs and landings from our carriers, as judged by the onboard Landing Signal Officer (LSO) or "paddles", as well as other feats of prowess as judged by the squadron as a whole. LSO grades shall be recorded on the "Greenie" Board for each carrier.



Recipients shall be encouraged but not required to display the MUTHA statue whenever appropriate that week, such as by appending the :weasel: emoticon to their posts, or temporarily adding the :raccoon: emoticon to their Airgoons channel Discord name. It is my hope that the continuation of this tradition by our Argentinean and Brazilian aviators shall encourage espirit de corps and the same tradition of excellence as that of our partners in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps.

"MUTHA" has been a long-standing and rich tradition in Naval Aviation, and its chapter with the Tomcat Community is about to close. For the uninitiated, the term "MUTHA" represents a beautiful and revered status or trophy, held by the squadron which displays the best of those subjective qualities labeled as "Fighter Spirit." It also applies to the FRS Skipper, of the Squadron from which all aircrew learn how to master Carrier Strike-Fighter Aviation and the Fine Arts of wreaking havoc upon our nation's enemies.

The MUTHA trophy did not originiate from within the Tomcat community. The trophy's origin is murky, with accounts varying from liberation from Asian shores to accidental discovery during an epic liberty call in Rosarito Beach at a roadside stand. Regardless, the trophy's origin dates to 1964, to the F-8 Crusader community and the VF-124 Gunfighters. At some point the trophy began to be awarded annually "by the JO's" to the most spirited Crusader squadron, as a counterpoint to any official annual award decided upon by a bunch of old guys. As such, it became as important to Squadron Ready Rooms as winning the Battle E. MUTHA found a home in a Crusader FRS, and went into hibernation after the last Crusader squadron disestablished.

After a year in hiding, MUTHA's whereabouts were uncovered by a dedicated and loyal cadre of former Crusader pilots. In accordance with custom, five of the most junior aircrew gather together to reinstitute the MUTHA Trophy competition. As all had transitioned to the Tomcat community, this group convinced VF-124, now the F-14 FRS, to make the Tomcat RAG MUTHA's new home. MUTHA continued her reign at the mythical place called NAS Miramar until 1996, when VF-124 shut its doors and the Tomcat community single-sited at Oceana. MUTHA was enthusiastically received by the Grim Reapers of VF-101.

The central figure of the MUTHA trophy is TANUKI; a legendary figure with a jug of sake that is never empty and a coin sack that is always full. Tanuki wanders through the country, taking part in impossible adventures, keeping company with the fearless rogues and bold revelers who are, in turn, blessed and honored by Tanuki's presence. Today, the trophy is carried in a wooden display case and guarded by the squadron who is most worthy of this legacy.

Over the span of three decades, Tanuki has been an integral part of the Tomcat community, awarded at the annual Tomcat Ball or Fighter Fling. The days of the big fighter are numbered, and in September 2005 the Tomcat RAG forever closed its doors, once again leaving the MUTHA trophy in search of a home. As the remnants of the Tomcat community merged into the Hornet Master Race to become one, big happy Strike-Fighter family, it is hoped that the tradition of MUTHA, and all it represents, stays alive. To this end, at the 2005 Strike-Fighter Ball, the last Tomcat MUTHA and Skipper of VF-101 turned over care of the trophy to P-MUTHA the current Skipper of VFA-106. P-MUTHA then bestowed the trophy to the VF/VFA squadron which best represented true Strike-Fighter Spirit, as deemed worthy by P-MUTHA and the JO's of VFA-106. The winners for 2005 were VFA-11 Red Rippers.

The following set of laws and traditions shall continue to govern the annual competition:

A. The MUTHA trophy shall henceforth be the responsibilty of VFA-106. Any Strike-Fighter squadron is eligible to win. The trophy must be treated with the utmost reverence, esteem, and awe.
B. CO, VFA-106 will carry the title "MUTHA" and the responsibilty of protecting the dignity of the MUTHA trophy and enforcing the rules of the competition. His right-hand man will be the OIC of the E/F Side.
C. The trophy shall be awarded annually at the East Coast Strike-Fighter Ball to the squadron that best exemplifies Strike-Fighter Spirit and Esprit de Corps. The winning squadron will be granted custody of the MUTHA trophy for the next year, in keeping with the Spirit of Tanuki, in order to demonstrate to the rest of the slackers what a real Strike-Fighter squadron is all about.
D. For the following year, the victorious squadron will pay careful attention to the MUTHA trophy and ensure its well-being. But beware: the MUTHA trophy does not like hibernation, it was created to be seen, coveted, and worshipped, to include regular and frequent appearances at the Officer's Club, exotic ports-of-call, and public events. To lock the MUTHA in a closet in cowardly fashion is to dishonor the Spirit of the Tanuki and is not worthy of true Strike-Fighter Spirit.
E. MUTHA will judge a squadron worthy of winning the trophy only if it exemplifies true Strike-Fighter Spirit that includes the following:

(1) Handily defeating lesser opponents in the air and destroying targets on the ground;
(2) Hosting events that bring together the Strike-Fighter community;
(3) Constantly proclaiming superiority to the rest of the Strike-Fighter community. Blatant self-promotion, embellishment and propaganda are not discouraged (this is known as the Red Ripper Corollary);
(4) Utterly defeating other squadrons in organized sporting events, like those during Strike-Fighter Ball Sports Week;
(5) Strongly patronizing the best Officer's Club on the planet at NAS Oceana;
(6) Regularly reminding lesser Squadrons (and sadly for the Pukin' Dogs, sometimes their mascots) of their inferiority to the point of making them question their reason for existence;

F. All MUTHA related activities shall be non-lethal, non-toxic, and non-destructive. They shall also be creative, well documented and at least mildly entertaining. Intentionally damaging other squadrons' property or someone's personal property is strictly forbidden. Any violation of this rule will result in full monetary compensation to the victims and substantial beverage compensation to MUTHA and the rest of the Strike-Fighter community (Minibus Transmissions are expensive, ask the Jolly Rogers).
G. Squadrons shall not rely on the labor of or take advantage of enlisted sailors and airmen during MUTHA-related activities.
H. While inside the Officer's Club or at the Strike-Fighter Ball Functions, MUTHA and the Trophy are off-limits to kidnapping and theft. Anywhere else is fair game.
I. After a squadron wins the trophy, they are responsible for renovating its case in the appropriate squadron colors. Good taste is not a requirement (this rule added after the Checkmates won).
J. A winning squadron will relinquish the MUTHA trophy only if its deployment cycle will prevent it from attending the next Strike-Fighter Ball. If that is the case, the departing squadron will return the trophy to its permanent home at the RAG, where MUTHA and his minions will guard it.
K. Large credit will be given to squadrons who liberate MUTHA from the winning squadron through clever means. Tanuki favors the bold, and possession is nine-tenths of the law.
L. In the days leading up to the ball, a frenzy of activity surrounds the trophy as squadrons feverishly try to display their worth. Headwork prevails, keep it safe.
M. MUTHA cannot be bought, bribed, coerced or unduly influenced. That said, should any squadron think it vitally necessary to afford him an opportunity to closely observe and impartially evaluate their particular brand of Strike-Fighter Spirit in person, that is certaining in keeping with the Spirit. Word to the wise: Check with MUTHA's SKEDS O and MUTHAS's CINC first. Style points may be lost, for example, if the MUTHA misses dinner with in-laws and has to take a mulligan the next morning.

CSAD Command,

I have two major updates for you:

1. Attached you will find satellite photos to confirm the location of the BSA previously suspected based on signals intelligence. It is at roughly 53°21'20.52"S, 69°15'51.11"W. This location has been doing final refit and staging for units unloading at Rio Grande before pushing them to the front line, supporting front line operations with logistical convoys, and accepting units for field repair.

Circled below is a probable SA-11.

Based on upcoming ISR availability, I do not expect we will get another picture of this site before your next major operation. It is unlikely that the entire site will move in the next 48-72 hours, but individual units and defenses may relocate, especially in light of your recent efforts to strike their SAMs and other critical enablers.




2. We detected the a surface action group departing Port Stanley and headed in the general direction of Puerto San Julian. It is likely that this SAG seeks to conduct anti-shipping operations and cruise missile strikes and then withdraw. USSOUTHCOM already has a small Marine Air Traffic Control team with some maintainers established in Brasilia Air Force Base, which up to this point have been assisting with humanitarian assistance and downloading the military aid already pledged. In order to maintain freedom of manevuer for your merchant marine and deter PLAN ships encroaching farther north, USSOUTHCOM has access to 2x USMC F/A-18C Block 20s in order to conduct an anti-shipping strike. We understand that your naval forces are at numerical and technological disadvantage, so we are doing what we can to ensure that you are still able to ship supplies along your coast with some level of acceptable risk.

The SAG consists, at minimum, of 1x Type 52 DDG, 1x Grisha, 1x fueler, and at least one more unidentified ship.

The F/A-18s will fly from Brasilia AFB, refuel, and join your AO to strike the DDG. In order to execute this mission, they will require CAP escort to the target area, which is to be determined. I expect the engagement will be at sea and out of visual range of the coast. We will not object if CSAD forces engage the rest of the SAG once the DDG is destroyed. The F/A-18s will be loaded with fuel and Harpoons and little else, so escort is a must. Upon completion of the mission, they will conduct aerial refueling and RTB.

I cannot promise that we will often get much access to aircraft, but when able, we are seeking options to support your operations with US fighter, strike, and bomber support.

The Army Depot at Calama, Antofagasta, has refitted a battery of four MIM-72/M48 Chaparrals and their support vehicles. There is no command unit, but each tracked launcher comes with three 5-ton trucks for replenishment missiles and spare parts. We currently do not have capability to transport them besides a local delivery on a Heavy Equipment Transporter from the Army Depot to the airport or the port some 65 miles away.

They are available immediately.

What was supposed to happen: Bomb (single) and 38x rockets against a target labeled as a Brigade Support Area (BSA).

What did happen: Made a weather and air defense call not to try to pop up and dive-bomb with a 2,000 pound bomb. Too much risk of high winds blowing it off target, blowing myself up, or eating a SAM or AAA fire while popping up or diving down. Fired 76x Rockets against the target area, which looks to have been a forward support company or something smaller than a BSA. While I expected soft-skin vehicles for a supply point, most of the vehicles were main battle tanks, so a mix of HE and HEAT Hydras aren't the best weapon for that kind of heavy target, but maybe some sights, dismounted crew, tracks, etc were damaged.

Estimate of damage is "moderate." There were some tents and stores, many of which went untouched (DCS-ism - Live units have dots to help you pick them out on a computer monitor, and static tents and the like do not. So by the time I picked those up, I was hard committed to a run against vehicles staged for repair/refueling and a communications tower). However, I damaged several vehicles, one exploded as I egressed, multiple rockets impacted the communications tower, and multiple rockets impacted the buildings behind the vehicles, which are certainly being used by the enemy for logistical stores and bedding down.

What went well:
1. Did not die.
2. Comms were clear from Buzzard on when I could ingress, Venom 2 was informative over comms, so that my very low-SA aircraft had a bit more SA before I committed.
3. Map recon and TACAN navigation paid off, as the view out the cockpit was almost exactly as expected when I dropped through the clouds around 8,500 feet and transitioned to approaching along the coastline at 100 feet.
4. Maintained decent safety flare programs for duration of time over enemy forces, kept up a gentle weave, which so far is enough to throw off HQ-7s.

What could have gone better:
1. Aim with rockets can always be more precise, and maybe I could have picked out the tents more clearly if I was paying more attention to seeing the whole scene and not distracted by the vehicles and giant comm tower.
2. I approached with intent to egress east, in a left-hand turn to avoid flying behind the enemy combat lines for longer than necessary. Once I lined up, I broke right to avoid the tower, flying me west past more enemy units. None of them hit me, but they engaged with MG fire, and if there had been a properly dangerous air defense unit present, it might have killed me. I stayed clear of the enemy artillery site, which was known to have radar-sighted AAA.
3. It wasn't freezing at sea level, but my pitot started to freeze up as I was orbiting and waiting to attack. Easy fix to turn on the heater, but I could've avoided seeing my airspeed mysteriously appear to drop despite flying level if I just set the plane for the weather conditions ahead of time. Would have been rather confusing if it froze as I was committed to a dive bomb or rocket attack.

Overall: Successful mission, probably moderate or light damage, no loss or significant damage to my aircraft (heard one single "thunk" of MG fire, never found a spot of even cosmetic damage on the airplane though)

Holding above the weather until CAP/SEAD in place.


After descending through the clouds using BULLS TACAN ref, pretty much on azimuth, just had to slide a little left and then take handrail the coastline on my right to get to target.


Rocket run replay:


This is why pilots say "I killed like everyone" even though a lot of that armor might not be so hurt.


HQ-7 either missed due to gentle jinks or I may have broken line of sight by this point. Missiles appeared dumb as they passed in front of me (but the sonic booms are exciting!) If you fly dead straight, they will kill you, but seem thrown by even gentle maneuvering you'd use to throw off AAA and MG gunners.


Headed home. Pretty dope view of the high ridgeline on the north side of the Strait of Magellan, marking relative safety and friendly dirt. it's a significant bluff, about 1,100 feet ground elevation.

we are pleased to report that the 2nd Naval Fighter-Bomber squadron has managed to fix some of our Super Etendards. As you know, the downsizing was rough and most of them have been cannibalized, but we currently can declare to have total of ten Super Etendards here. Out of those, 4 are essentially ruined, and 4 more are currently NMC. Thus, two are flyable and mission capable as of 19th FEB.

They are not carrier capable in the current shape, and are confined to hard surface runways. In better news, we received news that there's 15 Exocet missiles available at the Brazilian navy base at Itaguai, Brazil. If you organize a charter for them to Puerto San Julian, either by ship or by air, we can mount them right away.

There's only a really lovely mod of the Super Etendard in DCS.
Thus, our surrogate will be the AJ-37 Viggen. While this model was never exported, capability wise it is fairly close to the Super Etendard, and its RB-15F missile is also very close to the Exocet.

Cruise missiles have hit the airport of Rio Gallegos, SAWG. Four missiles were detected, and two were shot down. One by NASAMS south of the airport, the second one by ARA Intrépida sitting in the harbor.

The airport has hardened bunkers and revetments, so damage is light. One damaged C-130, and two destroyed F-5 fighters. The other F-5 was the one that was landed on a road in a prior operation by Uzi 1-1 and was just trucked back here.

Cargo Ship Sierra that came from Brazil to Rio Gallegos and dropped off Astros II battery departed for Brazil. At around 2000hrs local time on the 20th Feb, it broadcast a distress signal from S 50.52931, W 66.81815. It reports a big explosion aboard and smoke and fire. It is requesting help from the nearby warships.

Update to Topic 2. We were able to type the DDG emitter as they established an air defense posture post-strike on Gallegos and probable sinking of the Cargo Ship Sierra.

2x Unknown, likely corvette class.

The oiler and 1x Grisha escort appear to have broken east shortly before the strike, though imagery is poor. It looks like these two two ships are making speed out of the area to avoid any potential counter-attacks.

We see no indication of a permanent CAP over the SAG, but some of the J-11 CAPs out of the Falklands have trended further north, possibly to be on call in case required to support the SAG.

Summary :words:

Engagement 1
We departed Rio Turbio for a TARCAP between Lanus and Glacier.

Enroute to Glacier Condor gave us a heads-up of bandit Mig-21's on CAP about 80nm from us, with a second group some distance behind them. We proceeded until about 20nm from Glacier at which point Condor gave us an update that their CAP had turned hot on us.

Due to proximity of the enemy frigate, we opted to turn West back towards Lanus and drag them about 30nm clear of the frigates max range, once we were confident they were out of cover we turned to engage.

I advised the flight that I would be looking to grab the lead bandit, and that 2-2 & 2-3 should grab the trail. 2-2 was the first to launch on his target, and my shot was shortly after. During the closure 2-2 had gotten slightly ahead of me and it transpired that I had inadventantly grabbed the rear bandit, meaning the enemy fighters were about 10nm closer than we thought.

2-2 was hit and although we didn't see a chute we've been informed the pilot survived his plunge to the Fjord below, his write up will surely follow. I saw the lead bandit who killed 2-2, but couldn't turn to engage without breaking my missile lock and so tried to maintain visual while keeping my target in gimbal for terminal guidance. Once I had confirmed I'd killed the wingman, I turned to engage the lead where I saw a subsequent explosion, and was warmed to hear 2-3 claim the kill.

What went well?
  • Comms much better using SRS exclusively
  • We had mission specific sequential radio presets on Red :-3
  • We didn't get shot down by friendlies so assume our IFF procedure does infact work (despite lack of documentation.. )
  • Very clear communication from Condor helped us make tactical decisions about our engagement that kept us safe from the friage
  • In the fever-dream first run of the mission, we killed 2 bandits with zero losses; which would have been nice to write about!

What could have gone better?
  • I stuffed up grabbing the lead bandit; having reviewed the engagement from guncam its clear I didn't actually have the lead bandit on my scope due to significant altitude separation (they were at 30,000 and 18,000). I thought I saw 2 bandits at 18,000, but this was infact a ghost return. In future, we'll be confirming target alt with ABM and proactively using that information to help sort bandits.
  • I didn't react when 2-2 passed me and this created the scenario where compounding issues of my radar grabbing the far bandit and 2-2 being ahead put him in the killbox for their lead.
  • We either didn't react to or didn't get RWR alerts on the launches that killed 2-2 and a near-miss on 2-3, to be investigated.

Intent : JDAM 3 bridges from standoff distance and RTB.


Took after after Venom, flew up to 3k ft at MIL, followed by a light AB up to ~29k ft. Then slowly up to 31k ft. Flight moved to WP3, got the all clear and fenced into target. All JDAM's dropped, but unable to BDA due to cloud cover. 2-2 was unsure if the drop went properly due to an FCR issue.

What worked
Flight went up in good order without much issue. The Condition calls seemed to work well, though I still had to listen in for Venom's call. All flight members did well in prosecuting targets with JDAM's.

What Didn't
I went up and didn't maintain a tight and cohesive flight. My throttle had some stickiness but I could have just had everyone form up at the higher speed.

Please see attached plan for logistics. Supply base 'Bolsa de Tenancia' is to be dismantled, and moved back to Monte Aymond right off HWY 3. We request that the locomotives in storage be brought back into service to ply the Rio Turbio Railway between Rio Turbio and Rio Gallagos. A small notebook gets tossed to Ponitac 2-1, with a post-it note on the cover; "Still alive, will make a proper AAR once they let my frostbitten rear end out of the hospital. Hope you're still alive, did not like this 30 klick hike. Lumme." The notebook contains a few pages of timed notes starting from almost legible handwriting, progressing to illegible, and a ripped of piece of map.

In case this notebook is found on a corpse, please return to Peruvian Air Force 412th squadron, should save them time figuring out my latest gently caress up. besides, gives me something to vent frustrations on when taking breaks on this lovely hike.

Got shot down by a MIG-21 about 40 minutes ago, splashed down in the norther channel between what I believe to be Isla Santa Inés and Isla Peralta, swam to norther shore. Emergency radio is gone, so no ability to call assistance, and Almighty knows what’s happening in the air. Probably best to head towards our special forces on Glaciar Vasquez, starting to NW.

Can’t believe MRE:s can taste so good and a lovely sleeping bag feel so warm. I did run into a patrol from the radar, after somehow spending somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 hours on some 10 kilometers of glacier. Good thing I had the IR light on for them to spot, otherwise I’d probably continued to the other side of the glacier in a trance. Not going to ask what was in those energy tablets in the survival ration.

Getting a helo ride somewhere to be checked up, probably for the best, some body parts look unhealthily white. Sending this over to El Turbino along with a scribbled on map, rest of Pontiac can get a good laugh at my expense.




Next time I'll just write a bone-dry AAR, I should never be let close to any kind of creative thing.

The Dutch containerized housing units are arriving aboard the cargo ship MV Netherlands. The vessel is some 50 nautical miles away from Puerto San Julian. It has 200 standard sea can container sized housing units that has been contracted for the refugee crisis of both Magellanes and Malvinas refugees that are in Puerto Natales.
The containers are currently meant to be brought into Puerto Natales.


Dilemma


Do you want it to sail to Rio Gallegos harbor, closer to the hostile ships?

OR

Do you want it to sail to Puerto San Julian harbor?


In any case, you need to organize the containers into Puerto Natales if they are to go to their intended destination. How will you get 200 containers to make that trip?

Camaradas, you're all doing great but we still got much to do. The PLAGF has been slowed down and we got some breathing room to deal with another urgent matter.

Our bases have been attacked by cruise missiles and the cargo ship that brought us the Astros missile battery is also under attack. Time to focus on the sea this time.

Stop PLAN offensive operations on the South Atlantic ocean around CESAR and neutralize cruise missile launches using our naval fleets and anti-ship weaponry from the ground and air. We need to keep our bases and supply route safe from further attacks.

I'd like to see that ship unloading at Gallegos under the protection of the Brazilian Navy fleet. I believe we can use the Rio Turbio railroad to the homonymous town and have some trucks to take them to Puerto Natales but I heard some people got some additional ideas about this and we shall hear it soon.

As always, open to suggestions.
