Mortal Shell is a decent if uninspired bite-sized soulslike... Up until the final boss which is so bad* it retroactively ruined the game for me. With how many other options there are now, I wouldn't bother.

And what should one do to be remembered?
On a whim I decided to give the original Desktop Dungeons a go since I needed to get its trading cards to drop. I really enjoyed what I played of Rewind and I'd never played the OG so I thought what the hell, might as well give it go. What I didn't expect was to like it more than Rewind lol the art is charming as hell, there's an actual codex with information like what gods like and don't like as well as commentary on EVERYTHING and the whole dungeon fitting in your screen is great for legibility and strategizing. And then I learned that you can import your save and also every balance change save for the actual Rewind feature back into the game with the Extreme Edition mod??? Yeah I don't think I'm actually coming back to Rewind lmao

Strange Brigade for $4 including all the DLC sounded too good to pass up so my friends and I picked it up, it seemed neat when it came out but maybe not $50 great and the reviews kinda back that up. Looking forward to checking it out.

Mortal Shell: like Dark Souls but pitched for 'real gamers'
I'm not sure that's the description I would give. Like, there's no leveling or armor/weapon upgrading so must of the difficulty is completely front-loaded and once you've got a feel for the "heaviness" of combat and how blocking works, you've essentially mastered the game. The rest of it is definitely very budget dark souls where there's only 4 areas and each area only has like 4 different types of enemies. Fighting all the different enemies feels kind of the same as all of them will just slowly walk towards you when aggroed, and their attack timing is similar. The atmosphere of the game is really good, and it only takes like 5-10hrs to get through once.

The DLC adds a cool new weapon and shell, but the new gamemode is garbage unless you think "I really loved playing this game and I would like to play this same game again and again and again for hours at a time".

It's the publisher version, the only version that the devs distributed was on Gamesplanet. I say was, because it was taken down earlier this year. So I believe the only way to buy it now is from Nacon.

Yeah it went to court and Frogwares lost. The contract stated Nacon paid xyz per sale, and Nacon provided proof they were paying out at that rate.

Apparently Frogwares thought they owned the IP/sales rights and they didn't.

Save for the logistics, it should work I think. Steam Link on my Samsung tv doesn’t require a controller to be connected to the tv, but maybe it’s different in other versions of the app.

That’s strange, I’ve never seen Steam Link behave that way (I’ve used it to stream to a tv, iPad, and other PCs). Usually I can continue using the source pc same as usual (keyboard, mouse, controller), except I can also control it from wherever it’s being beamed to.

Yeah, I got a couple games in that pile: Against the Storm is one, as are several of the factory builders/management sims (Dyson Sphere Program and Satisfactory), and that Chinese Sci-Fi Visual Novel with Management Elements that I liked from several NextFests ago (Lightracer Spark). I know there's something to be said for playing a game as it develops, and I don't malign the practice: I'll certainly be playing Hades II the instant it releases into Early Access. But sometimes you just want to get through a game without the absolute knowledge that everything about it is going to be upended in two months.

EDIT: Huh. Well, I've been waiting so long already that I might as well wait until it's 100% done, but that is good to know for AtS.

Things could be going better

I'm running it through Steam so I'll ask here, I bought the Ultimate Edition of Control on sale, but every time I try to run it I get a "device removed" error that demands I quit the game. If I run Dx12 then it's immediate, if I run Dx11 then I can start to load into a new game before it hard crashes again.

I have a Nvidia RTX 4080 and Intel i9-13900K, with a 4k monitor (which may be part of the problem?)

Is this a common issue that anyone might be able to help me fix?

Last Epoch has an individual leveling/progression tree for every skill that is effectively the same thing as gems from path of exile and/or different flavors of the same skill in Diablo 3 except now you have to grind per-skill experience to transform your skills from being useless to useful.

edit: and you lose all your progress whenever you switch skills

Don't be so dramatic. The one particular skill you want to swap gets reset to a base level that starts at zero but increases as you level up.

Don't play vanilla control. The control HDR mod is basically an unofficial patch by the developers and you should play that instead.

That said, I have no idea if installing the patch alone will fix your problems.

A few people have kind of described it, but to go into it a little deeper, you have a selection of skills you can choose from to put on your bar that you can change whenever you want. But you also choose a certain number of skills to "specialize" in (which once you're fully leveled end up being the same number you can have on your bar, but you gradually unlock those specialization slots). Once you specialize a skill, it has its own internal branching skill tree. So, like my little basic skeletal warriors/archer skill:

when specialized opens up into this whole tree of choices:

Which can let me summon more skeletons, specify the type of skeletons I want, increase damage but lower the number of them, add in skeletal rogues, give them different abilities, etc. And every skill you can have has its own tree like this which you gain points in individually.

Well, that doesn't sound great. I'd hate to be stuck using only one or two skills forever. Do you lose ALL your progress every time you switch skills, or only progress which hasn't reached the next tier or unlock in the skill? I would assume the latter.

I started playing The Outer Worlds and I can't put my finger on why but it feels really hollow? Obviously the budget was smaller than a typical modern Fallout game but it just feels like there's so much less going on in the world that the kinda basic mission design isn't masked enough. I just did a quest series that boiled down to fast travelling back and forth between the same three or four points several times on the second major planet, occasionally fighting one of the two or three enemy types that the game has shown so far. I usually have a pretty high tolerance for games that people say are mediocre but this is just missing for me in a way that is surprising me. Also it seems like something is hosed up with the visuals, the day night cycle alternates between impossibly dark and wild neon haze.

You can freely use any unlocked skill for your character swapping it in and out of the bar as much as you like. Each character as they level unlocks specialisation slots that effectively 'become' the skills you're going to use in the end game because specialising a skill unlocks its skill tree and starts earning that skill experience towards skill points - when you're looking at changing a skill you can either remove single points from it or despecialise it, the former loses one level of skill experience, while the latter removes all experience from it and opens the slot for a different skill.
Skills take a lot less experience to level up than your character does and cap out at level 20, and as your character level goes up the starting level of your skills does too until it reaches 10 in the endgame.

It's probably only noticeable if you're aggressively shuffling all your skills around while levelling, as in the endgame you earn so much experience from enemies relative to how much skills take to level that you can completely change a skill and it'll be back to max in a few maps.

Nothing else about your character resets when you do this, just the one skill you choose to despecialise.
