Sorry, gently caress lionfish. They're an invasive predator with no control species on them and they are wreaking havoc on reefs in the Caribbean and in Florida waters. In their native areas, fine, they're cool. But where they don't belong? gently caress. Them.

This is very cursed, but also kinda cool. Also reminded me of how vampire bats have developed novel behaviors to feed on livestock animals. White-winged vampire bat (Diaemus youngi) snuggles up to a hen’s brood patch, a region rich in surface blood vessels that functions to warm eggs or chicks. By mimicking chick behavior, the bat lulls the bird into a relaxed state, then feeds on the hen’s blood. White-winged vampire bat (Diaemus) climbs onto the back of a hen, which crouches as if mounted by a rooster. The bat will then feed, typically from the rear portion of the bird’s fleshy comb. White-winged vampire bat (Diaemus youngi) feeds from a wound it has inflicted on a chicken’s backward-facing big toe, called the hallux. Feeding this way keeps the bat hidden from its sharp-beaked prey. Illustrations & photo are from this article in Natural History

This is absolutely nuts. You look at the body structure and think spider but then when you look closer, yep, that’s a weird distended fly adapted to a super-specific lifestyle The generational stuff and the grooming is wild too. It’s like with naked mole rats, where these creatures seem to adopt behaviours and features of entirely different classes of animals, mammals to insects and vice versa. It’s some SCP poo poo.

I expect North America to be a damned hellscape but I'm so disappointed when I see Eastern countries display that sort of behavior. I was recently in Norway and I dont recall seeing a single lottery ad. The best pizza place at home also has a bar in the back and thus, slot machines. They actually open bars in some rural places solely for the slots, because there's no night life to speak of. Anyway, its pretty normal to head in for a slice at lunch and see people waiting for noon sharp to hit a la Lenny & Carl so they can start gambling (they run from noon-midnight daily). They also have one of those break open ticket dispensers near the door. I had a couple quarters change from getting a slice one day and decided to try one. There was some kind of error on the machine and an admin prompt appeared. I tried, I dunno, admin//admin or something like that and it worked. I decided to log back out rather than try my luck, no pun intended.

Every now and then I have to go to a little town in Illinois with 7000~ people. Indiana doesn't allow gambling machines except at casinos. This little town has, last I counted, five gambling+liquor stores along the main road. Pretty sure every single gas station has a couple video poker machines too.
