Very curious to see if this leads Christopher to any sort of introspection or if he’ll just write it off as “well those guys are racist but I’m not like them, see, I quit my job, when I say it it’s just a joke”

Seems like he’s having a real lovely time right now - the past few chapters felt much more visceral than the others and the way his old-world life is spiraling into disaster as a result of either his deliberate ignorance or autopilot means that he’s never getting a break. Every time he wakes up, no matter where from, things have gotten worse. Amazing that he’s on the cusp of getting immortality and is confronted with the fact that a) it won’t actually save him from any of the threats that matter, since it sure didn’t help ganymede, and b) even if he’s immortal, he’s still going to be himself forever.

Yeah Christopher is in crisis right now and a lot of his own internal self-image and barriers have started collapsing in on him. Its an interesting transitional point especially since we won't get back to his POV for another 5 books.

Her assessment of Christopher is interesting because aside from his parents apparently being borderline alcoholics who fight, which we only learned last book, I don't think there is actually any unhappy secret or dark past inside him. And I'm not sure I agree with her assessment that his garden-variety racism must necessarily be a symptom of that.

I think part of it is that April really just fundamentally doesn't understand any of the boys as well as she thinks she does. And some I imagine is probably because she is someone who loves theatre and music, she's projecting a story onto Christopher that doesn't quite fit. She's also doing something similar with Jalil though not as overtly, assigning extra mystery to him. David she does seem to grok better, but even then he's more self-aware than she's giving him credit for. Its interesting to see after being in all their heads.

The most interesting part of her Christopher assessment to me is that she describes the ratio as 90 percent nice, 10 percent lovely - I have to wonder if that’s a case of us just never seeing the vast majority of times Christopher is nice or if it’s that when he’s lovely, he’s REALLY lovely and it sticks in our minds more. Did we miss previous discussion of April’s faith in one of the early books? I kind of want to go reread her interactions with the Knights in light of that.

Her faith is mentioned a few times, but has never been a real focus. There was the whole "virgin until marraige" discussion she had last book when Ganymede showed up.

Sure, the circumstances of entry are different from when they met Loki, but it’s another mark of progress for the group that they’re asking questions and trying to prepare for an uncertain future before they meet Zeus. And it seems like Christopher is finally starting to introspect a bit, which is nice. I like April’s POV a lot so far. Tree Bucket posted:Yeah, I felt legit dismayed to see the coo-hatch joining the wrong side. The Coo-Hatch just seem to want to GTFO of Everworld and aren't that attached to their gods. In that context allying with the Hetwan can make perfect sense, Ka Anor is trying to get a way to invade into other realities and almost definitely doesn't care if they follow in its wake while the human gods are much more likely to be total assholes about it. Like even if they allied with Loki to help out with the Senna escape plan, Loki has a pretty horrific record for how he's treated his subjects and allies so far just from our small view. And while I do honestly understand why the kids are hesitant to help support the gods or Ka Anor escape to earth, based on how introducing modernity so far has gone I feel like an outright Everworld invasion would be absolutely curbstomped by the U.S. Military in about a day and a half Zore fucked around with this message at 01:30 on Oct 31, 2023 |

Honestly the whiplash between Zeus almost getting taken by the most transparent betrayal ploy in the world and then immediately picking up on Senna and David's deal rules and really helps sell how set the gods are. And how Senna relying on her magic to manipulate people is absolutely not gonna help her here.
