Right, so what was different about that in 1958?

The Comics Code was in de facto effect from 1954-2001

The comics code posted:

- Crimes shall never be presented in such a way as to create sympathy for the criminal, to promote distrust of the forces of law and justice, or to inspire others with a desire to imitate criminals.
- If crime is depicted it shall be as a sordid and unpleasant activity.
- Policemen, judges, government officials, and respected institutions shall never be presented in such a way as to create disrespect for established authority.
- Criminals shall not be presented so as to be rendered glamorous or to occupy a position which creates a desire for emulation.
In every instance good shall triumph over evil and the criminal punished for his misdeeds.

That's Streets of Rage, which originally came out in '91 from Sega, so right on both counts.

Ironically three of the four main characters in the game are supposedly former police officers, who have gone vigilante in reaction to local government being corrupted by organized crime. So despite what the image implies, the game is arguably more optimistic about law enforcement than what reality warrants, insofar that its corruption is portrayed as an aberration rather than its natural state in the absence of effort to prevent it.

Doesn't Streets Of Rage also have a powerup or an easy mode option or something that makes the police shoot mortars (actual loving mortars) around you to clear the screen?

EDIT:
Yeah.

Both players have the "summon backup" limited-use special attack, yes. For P1, a squad car shows up and a cop fires a bazooka on their general position. P2 summons an officer with some kind of minigun that rains explosive fire all over the map.

Also, it's from Japan, where gun and drug laws are super strict, homicide rates are to the right of the decimal point, every neighborhood has a small police office, and officers only use their guns under the most extreme circumstances. If anything, a setting where crime is out of control and police are powerless is probably part of the escapism.

In probably the most successful political assassination of all time. Like, other lawmakers examined why that guy killed Shinzo Abe and realized "oh, that's sorta hosed up what happened to that assassin's mom, we should do something about it" and passed a law to help people who had been similarly victimized by the Unification Church. It'd be like if Congress passed a law forcing Jodie Foster to accompany John Hinckley to dinner and a movie in 1982.

Eh, there are other assassinations that are arguably more successful. Serbia became an independent country after WW1, so Princeps' goal was achieved...

There's actually a lot of practical issues with 'show up someplace with a hundred pounds of gold to sell' even when gold sales are perfectly legal. It's one of the reason why preppers who hoard gold and silver because of their 'intrinsic, universal value' is so laughable.

There's this cool/funny new Rob Liefeld parody character in Savage Dragon called Jeremiah Youngblood, he's got the cable arm and cool eye.

If I recall the anecdote right, it's also poking fun at how that old comic team Youngblood isn't something they can use anymore, since the rights were sold etc. But they can say "Youngblood is calling, they want you!", and it's actually this cool guy instead.

And a Y on his belt instead of an X.

But is that shoulder holster sitting on the front of his pec instead of, you know, between his ribs and arm, on purpose?

That's how it was on classic stuff like Steranko Nick Fury, Larsen uses a lot of oldschool chunky comicy stuff like that. And a lot of Kirby references too, like the kids made a Kirby referenced Dr. Doom sandcastle last issue too.

I know they are, but they don't normally have the top of the slide resting on the wearer's chest, with the entire firearm and holster sticking straight out from there. They either go on the side of the torso, or they're mounted side-on instead of edge-on.

I see what you mean now, I'd glossed over it at first glance. It just looks like wonky perspective to me. Probably intentional, since the guy's supposed to be Liefeld-esque.
