So I was at the WRC Central European Rally and despite some poo poo getting in the way, like beign sick and lovely weather, and missing a stage because of traffic, it was pretty fun. Thursday Friday The stage got canceled because of dangerous fan behavior after like 3 cars but at least I saw someone show up in a mint Sierra The next stage got dark really fast as it was just around sunset Saturday Got to Bayerischer Wald late because of terrible traffic on the way to the stage, and they canceled or delayed the rest race after a few cars Another Fan Zone had local live music though to keep everyone busy until the cars returned for the second go Sunday Only two stages on Sunday and I stayed at Passauer Land From the same spot you could see another section of the track behind you Going up that hill gives another view of the start and that hairpin There are some very smart people running a Porsche, an Alpine and a Fiata: I put the camera away and was loving around with the phone when this happened https://i.imgur.com/eIoMQVW.mp4 wasn't even expecting to capture anything (I saw absolutely nothing happen the entire weekend) and so I'm still mad it's off by like 0.5 seconds. They just slid down the grass hill and got back on the road luckily

It looks like it's been chopped, but from as far as I've been able to research, that's been the roofline since at least the 50s maybe even earlier

Are there any "coach" builders still who could handcraft you something like that except modernize the important bits?

Pur Sang for the body, maybe, if you threw them enough money and were willing to wait a while. It might fit on one of their big Fiat frames? An 80's F-150 with the 300cu.in. straight six would get pretty close to original performance while having more modern brakes and steering.

There's actually a fair number of coach builders out there who will put a steel or aluminum skin on an ash frame, sitting on top of a chassis. It's not cheap of course. A pre war rr or Bentley chassis will run you 40-100k+ on the open market and then I have no idea what the sheet metal guys are gonna charge. 2000 hours at $100/hr? Bentley Blowers change hands north of $500k these days. Stuff after 1930 is a lot cheaper because they look like dumb boring modern cars just with really nice dumb boring stuff Here's a guy in Vancouver doing some contract work for an aluminum skinned rolls Royce roadster up in Vancouver NC area, I think https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMUVoHEcV2U Here is a guy restoring a brooklands style speedster in his garage doing the ash frame https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YoiQ4_kEVw I have a fantasy about taking an old inline 8 slapping it in a post war rr chassis with a Bentley grille and doing something similar

In the world of Bentleys, there's always Bob Petersen. He'll definitely be able to build you a Sportsman coupe if you wanted - compared to a boat-tail racer, an Art Deco streamliner or a scaled-up Bentley on a Rolls-Royce chassis with a Meteor V12 engine it would be pretty simple. But certainly not cheap!

CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:All of them turds but still better than any dogshit modern crew cab It would not surprise me if that Astro panel van was still chugging around. Even less if the back doors don't close anymore, it has a single working headlight at any one time, no muffler, and drinks 5qts between oil changes. What good little vehicles they are/were. A tall, small truck based van, available in any configuration possible, with proven drivetrains, great parts availability, a surprisingly comfy cabin, and decent driving dynamics. It's one of those vehicles people deride until they use it in anger. For example: beer and softdrink distributors in the US held onto them until the mid 2010s. Great for the work. A bit thirsty for a salesperson to drive around all day, but capable enough for a salesperson to do their regular jobs, run out product for special requests, deliver or collect displays, and even tow a small trailer for events or demonstrations. Hell, in Tampa Bay, Coca-Cola and beer distributor route managers were given a take home Astro/Safari, and there was a tradition for those who climbed up through the ranks to put chrome wheels on the thing to denote that status. A "pretender" would lose his rims to fleet maintence if they hadn't earned them (they'd take off the chrome ones, replace them with steelies, piling the nice wheels in the back). Long live the van! Long live the mini van! Long live the mini-van!
