Yeah the basic charger can also only do charging in pairs, which isn't that useful if the use case is a single battery device like Quest controllers.
I mean, the controllers tend to run through in a similar time frame, if you just swap both batteries at the same time, they'll remain in a pair.

I think my quest controllers are really the only thing in my house running on double As. An 8 pack of energizers lasted me like a year or so, and was like 10$. 4 Eneloops and the charger was like 40$, so it's basically 4 years till the eneloops actually end up cheaper, but it's also much less wasteful. (And, yeah, if I do need AAs for other stuff, rechargeable gets better.)

I'm loving the clarity of the Quest 3. I don't know, though, if I'm over the wow factor of VR or if the Q3 makes 3D depth feel less noticeable.
I feel like I'm just looking at a cool 360° screen rather than in a 3D space compared to when I played the same stuff on the Q1 or Q2. Not sure if it's just me or if others are feeling the same.

My usual quick test is Aircar and I remember being so impressed with feeling I was inside a vehicle, but now it all feels very flat. Not sure how to explain it. Things are super smooth and clear, though, which is nice.

I've felt this way since switching from Q1. The contrast provided by OLED really makes a big difference when it comes to feeling depth and presence. Q2 and Q3 with their washed out black levels just don't feel nearly as dimensional.

Have to say I've warmed up to the Quest 3 a bit after getting a dedicated router, I do miss some parts of the WMR and the better/lower-latency/less demanding graphical fidelity of the Reverb G2, but the passthrough, tracking, software support, lenses, wireless and such are really nice.

e: Most importantly it's stable unlike WMR these days :(

Anything I should look for for rechargable AAs? I heard Eneloops are what I want? Anything secondary on that to look for?

I ran into an issue with rechargeable batteries I had for my Q1 that were 1.2v not working well with the Q2, so I then had to get some 1.5v ones that I now use with the Q3.

I finally got a fine-tuned DIY lens insert for my Q3 modeled up and done. I had something functional a while ago, but I wanted to shave down that last millimeter.... Even so, it's still not entirely flush but I'm through loving with it.

Just get the Zenni inserts if you can is my recommendation. They fit great and snap right in.

But it's a pain to DIY because the interface for doing so is super thin and fine, and there's not a lot of wiggle room. Making things worse is that it's not even "flat". Just get the Zennis (unless they can't do your prescription, like for me, in which case either fire up your workshop poo poo or just stick with glasses.)

My first post said "consider budgeting" and my second post said "if you've got $500 something as frivolous as a Quest 3 then it's not unreasonable to think you can do the 3-5k." Not unreasonable, as in, "it's reasonably possible". I never said everyone can automatically afford it or that it was for everyone, I never said people who can't afford it don't deserve to have fun. But I did go on to explain there's a return on the investment of not needing to buy these lens inserts or any other lens inserts or glasses and contacts in the future. Which does help offset the initial cost, on top of the QOL.

My boyfriend was scared shitless about it, but wound up thrilled that he mustered the courage and went from not wanting to touch VR to playing daily. Some people in the thread were pleased with it. We can extrapolate that it's a bit more than "almost every single loving quest owner" from that. It's totally OK if it's a bad choice for some or that they aren't compatible with it. I can see why people would be touchy about someone suggesting an elective surgery.

But you just couldn't drop it until you typed out your "this guy did a microaggression on the poors!!" straw man. OK, we have noted that Lasik is now one of those goon unmentionables like circumcision topics. People are sensitive about their eyes and genitals (because they're sensitive parts, get it?!). Let's loving move on please. Don't put words in my mouth next time.

Is there a good way to use a wired connection with PCVR outside of the oculus app? I thought virtual desktop would do it but it seems to be only over wifi.

Wifi is not really ideal for a long laundry list of reasons, mainly I have a lot of wifi traffic due to having >20 high bandwidth devices as I work on embedded hardware from home.

It still works okay but is not really great. Also the compression load on the GPU is more than I expected.
Streaming over wired USB is just running network-over-USB and then otherwise doing the exact same thing as over WiFi so your GPU compression load isn't going to change with a wire.

As for WiFi performance, there's a reason many people in this thread have a dedicated wireless access point solely for VR and most of the people like myself who have good results on a shared network are running higher-end WiFi systems with multiple APs being actively coordinated. At minimum you can push your unimportant stuff off to the 2.4GHz band and try to free up 5GHz for your gaming.

Hey everyone, sorry to post about VR in the proletarian-LASIK thread, but I wanted to share my experience with the Quest 3 so far. After some consideration, I decided to pick one up, going from a Quest 2 which I only use for Steam VR, and without even mentioning the new graphical fidelity and lenses, the thing is lightyears ahead of the 2 simply for all of the quality of life improvements. Set up is infinitely easier now that you can see flat screens with passthrough, and I thought to myself "Wait, is there anything stopping me from creating a space in the backyard?" It loving worked! After experimenting, I decided to go from the fixed 200 mbps airlink rate to the variable rate capped at 200, and just after the initial testing with a couple quickly drawn, but large boundaries, I had very little issues, and tonight I'm going to see just how big I can make the boundary before it becomes unusable.

I was able to walk around entire rooms in Pavlov without even having to use the sticks, and could literally run at people. Not having to worry about running into a wall and being able to naturally move about for the most part is something I've fantasized about since I was a kid watching TNG and The Lawnmower man. I utterly loathe Meta, but I have to give it props, and honestly, for my own usage, I'm not sure if whatever Valve is doing with Deckard will be enough to convince me to switch, simply for the seamlessness of moving through VR spaces.

Not too stupid
It's really nice that this thing tracks hands so I don't have to unplug my controllers if I'm not going to be gaming.

Getting a lot more use out of the passthrough camera than I thought I would. I tend to pop it on now while setting up my play area and didn't even think about it. Can see and grab my drink without the weird wobbly feeling I'd get with the Q2. I've responded to a few texts, but anything more complex, I need to take it off.

Into the Radius looks great in this, and with a 4090 and Airlink, it's smooth as butter.

Sunlight puts out absolutely stupid amounts of IR, which is more than enough to wash out stuff like tracking LEDs on controllers. The tracking cameras have no IR filters which allows them to pick up IR really well and work great for machine-vision type applications, but there's a reason why "camera" cameras block IR. Using the quest outdoors should be fine if it's overcast or dim, but if the sun's out and shining then I'd expect some tracking difficulties.
