Hadley Freeman was sincerely arguing in her Times column yesterday that it's racist towards Palestinians to call for Israel to stop bombing them.

Because, you see, that's infantilising the Palestinian people, and instead we should be holding them to a higher standard. The sensible thing to do is demand that they pull themselves up by their bootstraps, learn to deal with their own problems, and overthrow Hamas.

We are, as a nation, hosed. In the head.

One of the ideas suggested in the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is that if a job needs doing but nobody wants to do it (like sewers, roads, customer services) then you raise the pay of that job until they do.

It also pairs well with UBI because then if you don't want to work to just stay alive, you don't have to. You can be a philosopher poet if you want, you just don't get to demand any more than Maslow's hierarchy of needs.

But if you want more so you can buy fancy treats, you can do one of the jobs that needs doing. The more it needs doing the more you get. Everyone gets the basics they need, and then the extra goes to those working hardest.

The best way I've made headway on this is asking people about the guy at their work who half arses everything and doesn't want to be there - the guy who does the bare minimum to pick up a cheque. That guy can just stay home and not slow things down for anyone else who is trying to make extra. Again, this is in the context of a society where only the people who want to work are working.

I'm sick of this idea that absolutely every person needs a 'job' (employment which provides enough income to survive, for 99's benefit) or they die. It's backwards.

Economists love going on about material incentives to work, but that's not what wages are any more. They're not an incentive, it's the financial equivalent of treading water for most people.

RTP is good and everyone should read it.

Again, the tories are "you should make more money for us" and current labour are "we should make more money for them."

maybe a solution might be to not only tax passive income but apply community service to it as well. So if you "earn" 5 grand a month as a landlord or whatever then you need to clean toilets for 50 hours.

Xahra Saleem, 23, admitted using more than £30,000 that was supposed to go to a charity for disadvantaged youngsters in the city and to fund her lifestyle, including spending almost £6,000 on Ubers.

During her sentencing hearing at Bristol crown court, fellow directors of the charity Changing Your Mindset said Saleem’s crime led to the organisation shutting down.

I'd forgotten that from RTP, it's a long time since I read it. But it goes together well with "it's backwards" which is the core of MMT - instead of begging the rich for tax money and then maybe spending it on things, spend it where it needs to be spent (see Guav's poster), then see where it pools at the top and tax it off them. But I like the expiry date thing.

Maybe we can use a blockchain for that :v:

Celtic have suspended the Green Brigade - who I just had to google - are the group of their supporters who fly Palestinian flags at matches.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-67277186

quote:

The Green Brigade had already been banned from receiving tickets for away games.

It recently defied pleas by Celtic not to bring Palestinian flags to matches.

The Green Brigade, which occupy the north curve of Celtic Park, traditionally organise a tifo - a choreographed display involving a large banner or image - for major games.

'Terrific' Celtic take belief from Atletico draw
Celtic and Rangers fined by Uefa
Celtic fined for fans' anti-monarchy banner
The group handed out Palestinian flags and held up banners before last Wednesday's Champions League match against Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

The flags were also waved in other parts of the stadium as well as the section occupied by the group.

Ahead of the game, the club told supporters that players and coaching staff from both sides would wear black armbands "as a show of respect and support for all those affected by the conflict".

But it said banners, flags and symbols relating to the Israel-Hamas war "should not be displayed at Celtic Park at this time".
