A Returner's Magic Should Be Special ep 1-4 review: the world's most powerful heroes battle a godlike dragon which has killed millions and threatens to destroy the planet and just when it seems like they might finally triumph things go south real quick, and right when all seems lost the protag is somehow sent 15 or so years back in time to a period before the dragon appeared. He finds that he's returned to a point in his life where he's just about to enter magic college and hone his skills and meet a bunch of the other heroes but the magic school has a class system and only the children of nobles receive a proper 'alpha' education and the 'beta' commoners pretty much just learn the basics. He realises that if he and the others had received a proper magical education it may have made all the difference in the battle against the world-ending dragon so he needs to force the school to end their class division, and the only way to do that is to beat all the alphas in the big magical competition and force the school to promote him and his crew to the 'alpha' class. It's a pretty standard magical school series where the protag has a big secret which makes him crazy powerful, all the snooty rich kids instantly dislike him and underestimate his abilities, most of the teachers are real jerks but one teacher is on his side, he's got two sidekicks who have their own issues to work through, yadda yadda yadda you know how it goes.

I hope the ending is him at the final battle again but it turns out more spells don't help at all, realize he was supposed to go back and bridge the class divide and bring people together rather than beating people up, then he gets eaten by the dragon

It's nice to finally learn the origin of certain memes. I'd seen it plenty of times over the past couple decades, but never thought to ask about it.

The current plan is to have his trio of purely lower class students win the tournament they've never been able to win before, proving there actually is value in the lower class and hopefully starting to get positive attention and teaching support going there looking for more talent. Rather than trying to dig up and train literally every talent there himself. Whether this actually works or not I have no idea - haven't read the manhwa - and I can certainly see a potential issue or two already. Namely people looking for any excuse basically going "well, clearly these 3 are a huge exception that managed to slip through the cracks" (not helped by one being a noble bastard, another technically being a noble, if one raised from the commoners via money, and the final being from an orphanage and they can claim he's probably another bastard or whatever), but there really aren't that many ways to start breaking a stratified class system within 3 years other than showing there's some value in the lower class that at least some enterprising individuals might start looking into.

Just a heads up that an anime movie from last year called The Tunnel of Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes is getting shown in some theaters this weekend. There was no fanfare leading up to this. I saw it earlier this year with some terribly janky fansubs and despite the awful translation I still found it compelling in a way that kinda reminded me of Voices of a Distant Star. Will I watch it again now that I can see it with a translation that doesn't accidentally change a character's gender several times in the same sentence? Absolutely.

Having finally seen 3 eps of most things I wanted to (jeez trying to keep up is tough, I'm already behind on some of these), here's some early season impressions: Sousou no Frieren (8 eps): I remember the manga as starting out strong but kind of losing its spark as it goes, and the anime recreates this faithfully. The demon arc just isn't a very interesting story even discounting any thematic iffyness, and beyond that there's a lot of what I can only describe as faffing around in which I miss the emotional core and nippy pacing of the early eps. Still very pretty though Uma Musume S3 (4 eps): I'm... Not sure what this is doing. I really perked up at ep 2 which was great, but other than that it's been kind of skip-hopping from plot to plot none of which are that interesting in isolation. Season 2 had a stronger throughline tying it all together I think. I don't dislike the show but I'm kinda waiting for it to click together still. 16bit Sensation (4 eps): Fun, but also not quite working for me. I think I was hoping for it to try and convey the charm of eroge to a young, unfamiliar audience or be a pseudo-documentary about early gamedev, but instead it seems to be about nostalgically appreciating & playing on eroge ideas in a way that resonates more with people already familiar. I appreciate them trying to capture a very particular kind of zoomer social media fiend as the main character bouncing off a bunch of more normal people but they didn't quite nail the dynamic, and I completely understand why some folks just find her grating. I wish they'd spend more time exploring ideas like the programmer's distrust of modern tech convenience instead of Konoha's goofy time travel adventuring. Arknights S2 (4 eps): Now here's a positive surprise. The 1st ep still saw some of the odd writing choices I remember from S1, but after that it really clicks together. The aesthetic's still completely on point, FrostNova has incredible screen charisma as an antagonist, and the way they compressed chapter 5 made for a really tight little character focus episode. The girls are sad and do cool action stuff, with just a bit of proper execution it's a winning formula. Hikikomari Kyuuketsuki no Monmon (1 ep): It did, in fact, embarrass me. Just not my flavor of trashy, I guess. Kibou no Chikara: Otona Precure '23 (3 eps): They took the assignment of "precure with adults" extremely seriously, and it's fascinating to watch the inventive ways that plays out. Having an OL land in another woman's bed in a state of vulnerability but representing that vulnerability by reverting her to lil' bunny mascot creature form is some big brain stuff. I love the tone, that it's less about fighting grand despair and more about quiet resignation. I'm not even that upset about them reverting into teens to fight 'cause I think it serves a thematic purpose, though adult magical girl forms would've been cool. My biggest worry is that 12 episodes may be not nearly enough to satisfyingly execute on having this many characters & reaching for some pretty complicated themes with the global warming stuff, but I'm curious to see how they'll play it out. Hoshikuzu Telepath (1 ep): Too precious for me, even as a Kirara fan. Bokura no Ameiro Protocol (3 eps): I like this show more than it deserves, probably? I'd have a hard time selling anyone on it since there's not like, a clear hook and most other impressions I've seen on it have been fairly negative, but I like the grounded, low-stakes tone, its use of montage, the actress character just being the most ridiculous individual, and the way it captures the emotional nuances of gaming online with conversations that feel earnest and even intimate when it's a guy kinda pouring out his soul to someone who only replies in clipped little snippets of text. It's nice! It's nice. Bikkurimen (3 eps): Absolute goofery. Never seen anything less subtle about being an ad but it did make me want wafer chocolates, so mission succeeded I suppose? (not that bikkuriman choco is available in germany...) The cosmic battle of good and evil coming down to a rivalry between 2 convenience stores is inherently funny, at times the show is oddly The-Devil-is-a-Part-Timer-esque. Wouldn't say there's any secret hugely nuanced character stuff hidden here, I don't know how it compares to other kids' shows on that count, but I did enjoy the oddly psychosexual stuff with femboy sasuke. The sagely manager is cool. Fun enough to stick with

i think the engineer girl is pulling a lot of weight to balance that out agree that this season of uma musume is a dud so far, feels like it's just going through the gacha anime motions now whereas all the previous entries had a clear identity and trajectory from the start

I caught up on Migi & Dali with my friends and we're really digging it. It's always enjoyable to see someone's bizarre plans come into fruition while still backfiring in unexpected ways. The supporting cast are total freaks in their own rights. I also was surprised that the twins have distinct personalities. I didn't even realize they had two different voice actors.

This is basically where I've fallen on this too. It's not a stand out or anything, but it HAS been pretty solidly decent so far. I also remain mildly amused about the actress's manager being like "well, games don't really fit your image, but as long as you keep them in moderation it's fine. Certainly better than some dating scandal." And as soon as she joins the team she's blatantly thirsting after the MC (and old gaming partner), to the point of immediately side-eyeing the other girl on the team who's his childhood friend (and there seems to be nothing but friendship there).
