It's coming up on the finale of The Morning Show and there's this big scene where Reese Witherspoon's character is confronted by her girlfriend (played by Julianna Margulies) about the cover up she perpetrated over her brother being involved in 1/6

It's supposed to be a pivotal moment where a journalist is confronted with the moral failure of having crossed every line to protect "a terrorist". She's covering for someone who assaulted a police officer!

It feels so loving hollow in light of, well, today.

I don't know what demographic that show is for at this point
it's basically like "what if controversial topic but the perpetrator is played by a very likeable person" but that plays out as like... apologia almost
it seems like it's trying to be clever and nuanced but unless it ends with all the journalists going to forever prison it's just propaganda

I watched Marie Antoinette last night as dual warm up for Napoleon and Prescilla, and I couldn’t believe how good and funny it was, I was laughing almost nonstop through the first half. It’s sort of a feminist take on Barry Lyndon in its hilarious portrayal of the ridiculousness of late feudalism

so im about halfway through the second season of strange new worlds and i have to say im not sure i like this show as much as i used to there were cracks at the end of the first season i tried to be positive about but there have been a lot more hijinx than i was expecting or wanting and the show in general seems to have moved away from interesting logical puzzles to character relationships and imaginary social criticisms that i just really dont care very much about

of all the damned weird things to make me come to this conclusion the main factor might just be that ive been watching enterprise not super consistently and its surprising how much better the worldbuilding holds up vulcans and vulcan culture are presented as assholish in both shows but an important caveat in enterprise is that the vulcans are actually right more often than not something even the most racist human characters are begrudgingly forced to admit and vulcan society itself is also presented as having internal divisions that dont neatly divide into good and bad its hella onpoint that the leader of the hippy vulcans who think emotions arent all bad turns out to be a rapist who abuses the technical correctness of some of his beliefs to get on the good side of people who have unrelated issues with the current dominant vulcan political structure

contrast strange new worlds where the vulcans all seem to be assholes and theres just...no upshot at all frankly theyre so one dimensional they actually make me nostalgic for tuvok of all things because tuvok actually likes vulcan culture and discusses it philosophically sometimes theres more to it than convoluted racist tea rituals all of the respect the characters even pretend to have for vulcan culture in strange new worlds feels really forced because anytime anyone is faced with an actual vulcan or in spocks case half a vulcan theres just thinly veiled contempt toward them for being different in a way i cant really conceptualize as being anything except boring old patronizing settler racism i dont think im superior to you you think youre superior to me bullshit

im also feeling the spock chapel romance even less than i was feeling the spock uhura romance from the movies i dont understand why of all the crap from the movies youd want to reheat youd pick that one what sold me on the show was pike being depicted as a guy coming to terms with his inevitable mortality and trying to do the best job he can in spite of that but i swear its like the writers decided that hook wasnt interesting and decided to just write everything in the style of the brief januaury sixth reference in the opening episode instead because it got more social media engagement

I think SNW is the finest Trek made this century, bar none.

However, I think you did hit a point I didn't see until you mentioned it. Yeah, SNW is fairly anti-Vulcan. Spock is half human and the tidal forces between that and being all the way Vulcan are a key point of drama in the series, and they seem to land on "humanity rocks" more often than not and the Vulcan part of him is presented as something to be overcome rather than embraced. In the second season they have an entire episode about this and I felt like Vulcaness was still being treated as an annoyance by Spock.

I suspect this might be an outcropping from Discovery, where this was played up even more as Burnham was Spock's adoptive sister and rear end in a top hat Vulcans attacked them over it.

I haven't watched it for over a decade, but I remember liking Shattered Glass a lot. I guess a lot of it was because it was well acted. I could imagine upon rewatch being way more critical of the PMC CRISIS premise. Order and justice was restored by the noble editor simply firing the hero-turned-villain. It holds the profession of journalism in such high regard.

Glass (the character and real person) was caught lying about a low stakes story about a teen hacker. He was lying his way upwards like every ambitious sociopath, but he wasn't really shown making overt propaganda for the US Empire.

Perhaps today he might have been a Twitter main character for 48 hours who survives the scandal by constantly posting through it. Media people have gotten away with much worse the past few years alone.

so a thought on scavengers reign does anyone else think the woman whos with the guy is kind of a jerk even though shes played up as the perspective character i was like right there with him when hes going look i dont want to be a jerk but i was scared shitless when you jumped back into the giant thorn wall for no reason and youre continuing to talk in vague platitudes about what a great experience it was is really pissing me off because we could seriously die out here if you keep it up with that poo poo and her response was just pfft maybe youd die but im a badass and ill be fine on my own :smuggo:

its weird because shes definitely framed as the "nice" character but i honestly like her a lot less than the other woman whose only dialog saying mean things to her robot but tbf i also hate robots so maybe im just having trouble internalizing her racism as being a character flaw

ughhhhhh it barely makes sense but also i was on a couch drinking margs with the boys. i think i caught good bits, like kyle's mom being nonchalantly okay with diverse casting. the negative feedback loop between racists and liberal corporate diversity is the climax if that's your thing

the b-plot is randy and all the other dads getting out-earned on the marketplace of ideas where they try to make a point about the intelligentsia, small business owners, and billionaires. there's a marxist analysis of this one but i will not be the one to make it

Carrie's a good movie. Brian De Palma might not be a consistent director, but he has a lot of good moments in his filmography.

Stephen King seems to basically write stories about the horrors of boomer childhood where bullies would just flat out brutalise and murder people and adults actively did not give a poo poo or acknowledge it in any way

It explains a lot about the boomers tbh

Mike Kelly, the actual nepobaby idiot editor suckered by Glass and almost deified in that movie of course went on to great continued success as a “liberal” cheerleader for Bush Jr’s wars. And a “liberal Catholic” that supported traditional marriage values while loving and loving over every young female intern in sight.
