Three Minutes To Eight came out yesterday. It's one of them timeloop games where you have 15 minutes until you die, and then you have to start over and try to figure out what's happening.

It's a point-and-click adventure, and a thing I like about it is that you're not actually on the clock in real time - it only increments by 1 minute when you change locations, so there's plenty of time to think about your next action. Another nice thing is that you get to permanently keep 1 item in your inventory on reset, so you don't have to repeat the same actions and conversations each time. Getting to ending 1 of 10 took me 2hrs, so I would guess total playtime may take somewhere around 10-15? Pretty cool, try it.

Update on this one - played for about 5 hours, I got a couple of different endings and ehh... it's not very good. There's some ideas there, but the writing is paper thin and after the first 2 loops the gameplay of doing the same things again and again gets tedious really fast.

Play Slay the Princess instead - I have finished my first playthrough and it's amazing, will get back to it for sure to try different things.

I've been playing Peaks of Yore for a couple days now. Really fun game, but if you want to play on controller I'd recommend adjusting some bindings. By default coffee is clicking in on the left stick (I changed it to down on the d-pad) and the climbing kick-off is left trigger which is hell to hit with the grab buttons being on the shoulders. I changed that to the right stick and it works well.

Yeah I've had some issues on controller, the dynos where you have to make a jump between holds can just be so hard it feels almost random whether I make the grab or not. It's not THAT hard but with the physics and controls it's almost a first person frustration platformer of some kind. Still really fun and keeps you coming back even after failing. I did want to ask though, mine is giving my keyboard instructions for some reason, to use the rope is Q then move up and down with W and S. What are the controller buttons for that? I've been having to switch back and forth because I couldn't figure it out.

Maybe I should just switch to keyboard and mouse, but I really dont want to. Or perhaps I just need to git gud but I fell at the very last hold on one of the peaks and had to rage quit for the time being.

It's so good, I am LOVING Jusant. It looks amazing, so colorful and detailed despite being somewhat low-poly. They do the 'no dialogue' kind of thing (apart from notes you find in the abandoned world) but somehow it works better here than I've pretty much ever seen it work. The climbing mechanics are excellent, much much easier than Peaks of Yore and in third person, but there are still challenging sections that require you to think and can be failed, and it's still physics based, the physics, handholds and tools you get are just more generous. The worldbuilding is fascinating, I'm still confused about what exactly has happened there but hoping things will become more clear as I go on. Seriously, if that game looks interesting to you do not skip it.

I've been a fan of DON'T NOD for a while, and with this game they are really trying something new and challenging from what they normally do. Happy to announce that they knocked it out of the park. Not only that but 25 bucks is a STEAL, they could've asked for 40 easy.

For me it's tapping up on the d-pad to switch to the rope and piton, then you hit X to nail it in somewhere. If you fall you hold down Y and use the left stick to move up and down.

Yeah I finally figured out the Y thing, I PRESSED Y of course to see if that was it but didn't think of trying to hold it.

I'm also a little annoyed at how ropes work, maybe I'm not doing it right but if a rope reaches down far enough you can press x to connect with it, assuming you're on the ground. However, I'd like to be able to connect to ropes that I climb back up to after needing to disconnect from them earlier. Logically you should be able to grab on to any part of the rope and attach yourself to it, but it seems like you can only detach yourself, and if the end of that rope is somewhere inaccessible there's no way to get back on to it. Which is unfortunate. Or am I just missing something?

I'm currently on the climb with a ton of branches to grab onto, and goddamn it's hard as hell. I get to the same spot every time then just cannot figure out how to proceed.

This game is really something unique, that's for sure. The art and music are beyond amazing. I often praise the art in video games, but this one takes it all a step further. Not a single element of the presentation is lacking, it's truly one of the most beautiful, and one of the most artwork-intensive games I've seen in my life. The high medieval-themed gaming cabinet which presents the working minigames is a perfect example, it's just so gorgeous and fun.

The game itself is more complex than I expected as well, there are so many systems: hunger, sanity, health, money, suspicion, love, etc. Much deeper than I expected. Haven't gotten TOO far in but the dark fairy tale vibes mixed with a pleasant Germanic-seeming village is very cool, and there is definitely a sense of dread and inevitable tragedy hanging over the whole thing.

So yeah, unlike many games this one is worth the positive reviews, definitely worth your time if that sounds interesting to you. 20 bucks is a steal as well, the graphics may not be fancy but I can promise they took a ton of work.

Yeah it's no joke. I pushed through a few tough levels but I'm pretty much stuck on the large cliffside where you have to climb the tree roots. I was also a bit concerned at wearing out the shoulder buttons, you're basically holding one or both of them down at all times while playing. If anyone has played both, how do Jusant and Peaks of Yore compare to New Heights? New Heights is fairly realistic when it comes to finding foot and handholds and shifting your weight appropriately but is a little hard to control. Climbs are timed, but you are moving at a pretty realistic pace so it isn't really something that would be exciting to speed run. I get the impression Jusant is less involved than that, but what about Peaks of Yore?

Neither of them are anything like that. Peaks of Yore is basically a 3D frustration platformer in a climbing skin, it's in first person and you only control your hands. It's pretty tough and not easy to control. Jusant is more of a walking simulator with some futuristic/fantastical climbing elements involved, and it's very easy. Again you only control your hands, the feet do their thing automatically and it's more about mapping out your route and using your tools than any real challenge. It's also very, very forgiving when it comes to getting holds.

Talos Principle 2 is absolutely stellar so far, I have a feeling the sheer amount of dialogue and narrative elements may be divisive but for me they're just elevating the experience. If it keeps up the quality (I'm coming up to the third main area), it's going to be up there in my GOTY choices. Which is pretty crazy in 2023, considering the deluge of quality games we've had this year.

Performance is a bit messy on the PS5 unfortunately, but it's not detracting from the experience too much so far.

Tried it out in Nextfest. It's Noita but reimagined as an roguelike arena shooter. Suffers a lot from not really giving you spell components until you're a few rooms in, but Noita has the same issue, I guess! The story is an isekai thing and has nothing memorable to it.

Performance is a bit messy on the PS5 unfortunately, but it's not detracting from the experience too much so far.

E: for those playing on PS5, there's a bug related to performance and quality modes. When you start playing, go into the options, set it to quality, and then back to performance for it to actually work. The framerate is terrible on quality mode.
I'm comparing it to Tears of the Kingdom in my head, having that same giddiness I got when entering a shrine to see what tricks the next puzzle holds.

I'm stunned by how good the world looks. The first game looked good but wasn't even aiming for this scope.

I'm also very into the mystery of it all.

My only minor complaint is the way it frontloads optional but important lore might have been handled better. There's a lot to see and I just wanted to get to the puzzles eventually. And the sheer size of that area didn't help.

The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

...I would say technically no, but the start of 2 gives a loredump to the backstory of 1 and the expanded gameplay might make going back difficult if you ever wanted to do so. The puzzles in 1 will still be good though, I don't feel the ones in 2 deminish those in any way since the "get through this course with only these tools" format still holds it's just a bigger toolbox to pick the limited tools from.
