A Major at 25. At my age I'd probably be a five star general.

Even by IDF standards that seems young. Officer ranks go like this -

- They get second lieutenant (one rectangle, they call them "closets") after finishing their special Officer course. They can start it not too late into their service, even complete it way before they're done with mandatory service and become a career soldier. There's also the "designated for officership" guys who do half a year to a year or so of specialized training right as they're conscripted and than start their proper service already as officers, but IIRC those are only for REMFy jobs (at least according to this https://www.mitgaisim.idf.il/%D7%9B...%D7%99%D7%AA/#/ )

- first lieutenant (two closets) a year after they get second lieutenant, OR as soon as they finish their mandatory service and become career soldiers, whichever comes first, OR as soon as they finish all their special officer training if they have a bachelor's degree (some soldiers can choose to delay their service for an amount of time to go study in university and do all or most of their service afterwards.)

- captain (three closets) after three years as first lieutenant OR after finishing all their training poo poo if they have a master's degree (same poo poo)

- major (one leaf, they officially these falafels for some loving reason) yet another three years later OR after their training if their have a doctorate.

To clarify, I'm pretty sure that these college officers are also only for REMFy stuff. But yeah, a combatant with the rank of major that's only 25 is weird.

one of the things that's interesting to me is that "a population so determined to resist that they will run up to a tank just to throw a molotov on it" was something that the media kept hyping up as what the Ukrainians would do, which obviously did not happen

but not only did it not-happen, it did not happen from both directions. As in, the babushkas and the child soldiers didn't get a chance to throw molotovs on T-90s because the Russians didn't fight like that. They did lose their share of tanks, but those tanks were taken out with ATGMs and drones and other conventional means, never through anything as radical as what the Hamas fighters have been doing

at the same time this rhetoric is so blindingly evocative of this idiotically memorable Bush quote from the immediate aftermath of 9/11, that while I take that as an unintended emergent consequence of imperial powers tending to stick to similar lines to justify their atrocity, it did make me do a bit of a double take.

KMFDM samples part of this exact text in Jihad for fucks sake. Nothing changes structurally it's just the same flat circle of poo poo.

You know on one hand the IDF armor would almost definitely be fighting better if they ditched the Trophy system and just had infantry screening them, but on the other hand if the infantry has the survival instinct of the tankers they might have already been wiped out

Screening armor with infantry doesn't necessarily result in your taking fewer casualties per day, it just helps the armor do its actual job. If that helps you win the war, it's normally considered worth it, and probably results in fewer casualties in the long term.

The IDF ground invasion of Gaza doesn't have any achievable goals. They are casualty averse. They are not organized or trained for the job. The only metrics they can actually make progress towards are maximizing the number of Palestinians killed and minimizing the number of Israelis killed. The former is the IAF's job, which means the army is just going to whatever it needs to do to minimize its daily bodycount while satisfying the mandate that they "loving do something"--irrespective of any broader operational or strategic picture (there isn't one).

I haven't been watching very much Irish state news media lately, since it is usually infuriatingly reliant on saying 'X says this Y says that' without any comment on the relative reliability of each source.

However, today I got a glimpse of what they are showing in the way of footage on the ground Gaza, and they were most definitely not pulling any punches. It was from the scene of a recent Israeli bombing, with some extremely horrific information.
An incredibly distressed little boy, no more that 9/10 years old who said he had had to carry a decapitated body away from the area
I just checked with someone else, and they said that same footage had been replayed several times on different news reports throughout the day.

How the gently caress is a SSG (is that a warrant officer?) responsible for a section?

That's on you guys too.

Lance Corporals should be leading half-sections and Corporals sections.

in the us army at least and only looking at NCOs, cpls-sgts are responsible for fireteams (nominally 4 troops), ssgs are responsible for squads (9 troops, 2 fireteams), and sfc are responsible for platoons (nominally 36 troops or 4 squads, but often include medics, RTOs, FOs, or any other embedded guys/gals). Above this usually is the 1SGT responsible for the company (3-4 platoons), then the SGM responsible for the battalion. I'd add a caveat here that this isn't strictly the case across the board and you'd fill positions with whatever dudes you have available if a unit is understrength.

I know the marines are different with their lance corporals, afaik the army equivalent are specialists but they're not considered to be NCOs. Specialists and corporals are both E4s, but IME corporals are rare and the usual promotion track is E3 > E4 (specialist) > E5. Only real high speed guys would get corporal and it was usually given as a reward for stuff like going to ranger school (and then it was only to cram them into a leadership position asap until a sergeant slot opens up)
