Israel naming their tanks after gods magic chariot and then getting them all blown up because they refuse to screen with infantry feels like a metaphor for something,

it means both chariot and throne and i gotta agree that it is pretty much a toilet considering how hard hamas is making GBS threads on it

There must be veterans of Lebanon still in the IDF?

I don't understand how all of the lessons learned have been lost. They drove tanks into downtown Lebanon and created Hezbollah. Surely somebody remembers.

Hamas (and the rest of the world) didn't expect Israel to apply their Samson Policy for nukes to a bunch of hostages too.

I feel like this kind of thing keeps happening both historically and into modern conflicts dealing with western powers and their allies, where people fighting against then somehow manage to always underestimate how inhumanly evil and vile and insane America and its rabid dogs will act.

I think if the attack was more successful and damaging than expected they didnt expect Israel would go full berserker mode and just ignore the hostages. Previously taking hostages has been very effective.
Which is why they did start offering to exchange them all really early on but it fell on deaf ears.

Israel probably can also reason that the hostages place a strain on hamas and as long as its politically expedient to ignore them it's also tactically useful cause it'll waste hamas resources.

I dunno how true it is but there's a few reports that the original attack was meant to be more focussed on idf and then once they bust the fences down and realised there was no opposition a bunch of other fighters and groups starting taking the opportunity to do some massacring and taking prisoners

No matter how cynical you try to be. No matter how low you set the bar. No matter how much you prepare for a worst case scenario. Israel, America ect ect will reveal themselves to be nothing more than literal actual demons straight from hell with nothing resembling human mind or thought behind them.

The Israelis withdrew from Israeli in 1983, all those dudes are long dead or retired, the Israeli army of 2023 is completely different creature.

In the report you linked before, it sounded like the people who went "the problem with Lebanon was that our tier 1 high speed low-drag operators simply weren't technologically advanced enough" won the internal doctrine war post-2006.

Makes sense that they did, "we need to start sending lots of soldiers onfoot and screen for tanks" is probably a nonstarter for a country as casualty-averse as Israel.

Why? What's a few hundred hostages compared to the two million people you can't feed already? And suppose you let all hostages go? Israel will try to bomb you while doing so and imagine they take it as an excuse to call off the ground invasion? Both losses in the IDF and cops beating up hostage families is putting pressure on Israeli society that them sitting back and starving Gaza out doesn't.

Granted, Israeli society of 2023 is pretty different than 1983. You could argue that full neoliberialism hadn't bit yet and there was more of a buy in from average Israelis into the project, while in 2023, rhetoric aside, no one actually seems to want to die for the cause.

Remember that Tik Tok lady that said bombs hitting Gaza was music to her ears, but the sirens were annoying her and she was going back to the US? She isn't the only one.

Otherwise, in Beirut, the Israelis got completely bogged down in fighting, but also it has been 40 years and Israel perhaps doesn't have great options.

I think if that were the case they would have given up the hostages by now, even in return for nothing. they're getting slaughtered and they can't stop it whether or not there are hostages, and keeping hostages is a drain on resources.

One of the larger sources of tension within Israel is from Israel not recovering the hostages, so they still serve a purpose there.

I don't think there was anything wrong with Israel's older generation of tanks, particularly the ones based on the M-60 and Centurion.

Merkava was, imo, not designed to be a better tank per se, but designed to be one compatible with the British embargo on Chieftain, and later, to have as few casualties make the papers as possible during Lebanon.

If they're taking the older tanks out of storage, they'll have the same problems, but I don't think they will be any worse.

Does any other nation as tiny as Israel have their own line of MBTs? Seems like they would have been better off buying from a country with a fully built out MIC
