Turns out the company we spent like a year and a half building a self checkout cash register solution for hadn't actually signed the contract to buy it and refused to do so when we called them on it, whoops

They had initially signed a 6 month like exploratory contract that paid us to develop a prototype, with the expectation that they'd sign the full contract after that, and then they didn't and we just, uh, kept going hoping that we'd convince them to do it later, or something.

local supermarket just added "AI" to the checkout. it uses a top down video to flag any movement or change in weight in the bag area that isn't preceded by a scan

with two kids and trying to scan loving 2 ft leeks, it went off 4 times across 8 items and each time the supervisor had to come over, count my items in each bag, and watch 10 seconds of video to see if I was shoplifting. it was absolutely insane

I still don't know when it's acceptable to remove a filled bag, it starts complaining about it no matter what I do. and I also start just running out of room to put things. I also missed a tin of herrings the other day and ended up shoplifting it by mistake.

Typical of American society to place the onus on you doing everything exactly right and hovering around waiting to punish you if you make a mistake on the system you've received no training on, that changes all the time, and is different in every store.

I was working for a consulting company that was in turn supporting a company doing this. It was blatantly clear that we were building garbage that would never sell, especially since the company we were working for torpedoed their reputation and were also being investigated by the FBI at the time. But hey, as long as those cheques were coming, we wrote code for them.

I worked at a firm where one manager had to make a big public apology to the company on two non-consecutive occasions.
First for accidentally sharing a pornographic meme in the company chat.
Second for costing the company millions because he made promises on email to the client on stuff we could not deliver within the budget. We were forced to develop stuff for free over long months just to not have the client sue us.

He's the CEO now.

I'm currently dealing with a national head of a sales division for a chemical line who can't read an SDS and has no concept of what is or is not a hazardous chemical.

This man is managing products that if not properly handled will create chlorine gas clouds, or lead to people drinking contaminated water and he's subliterate at best.
