im assuming the fun Jason movies are the ones that get as campy as Krueger, so I should just watch the one where he goes to hell and then watch the one where he goes to space??

Yes. I mean 5 is fun because it’s campy and shot like a porno (by a porn director) and 6 is legitimately going for fun and is maybe the best one. But you should absolutely take a trip with Jason to space.

5 is the absolute nadir of fun. 3 is sort of “classic”, it’s honestly the only one that’s like the stereotype of a F13. 4 is a mild subversion of that, but still mostly playing fair. (1-2 it’s not really going yet) 6 is high camp(haha) and starts Jason as a god of death. 7 continues but the problems start. Then it just turns to schlock. Freddy vs Jason I’m not convinced they watched the series. No Jason is not afraid of water he lives in a loving lake.

For those interested, Chucky's being added to Dead by Daylight. Shame it's not Brad Dourif doing the voice though. As for F13, I'm a Part 5 defender, that movie is just so ugly and mean, I can't help but love it. 4 and 6 are definitely the best ones though. F13 part 6 has goopy undead Jason. Builds on the mythology and has a great finale. 6 is definitely for me the best one.

5 had a great premise and setting and at least two very likable characters but otherwise didn’t quite deliver. would be an excellent choice for a remake imo

Jason Lives is definitely where you want to start if you just want that iconic campy undead hulk Jason that everyone knows. Up to that point they didn't really make a special point of shooting Jason in a certain way or playing up his mythical status, but with Jason Lives you start to get much more attention paid to making Jason look cool as hell.

Influential but uninteresting. Not trying to insult it, but I already don't like a movie that's just "guy stabs people" without any real flair. I want something campy and loud and creative. Maybe I'll start with 6 or something. I watched the first 20 min of the space one and it just felt like I was watching some bad Star Trek show.

If you're gonna jump into F13 from a point that isn't the first one, at least do the Tommy Jarvis trilogy, 4-6.

Thanks to everyone who gave me cool 70's recs! Enough of you came out of the woodwork I'm not gonna quote you all, but they're all saved in a google doc and I'm gonna work through them. When I inevitably come back to the thread and say "Wow, Movie X loving rips!", make sure you take credit for it. Punkin Spunkin posted:This is my instinct but gently caress there's so many of them. I'm not really into slashers. Elm Street connected with me because of the creativity and insanity, and just because that first one is a drat good film. I got you, fam. Highlights Reel of F13 : 3 - It's the one actual straight one with all the bits and bobs. 4- Start of Tommy Jarvis and it's also legit decent 6- End of Tommy Jarvis (gently caress 5, you just need to know that Tommy grew up, they cover it fine) Jason X/Freddy vs Jason - Pure fun schlock. You can skip the others and you'll be fine. Did they actually do most of the stories from NALM?!?!? Holy poo poo, I need to see this. I loving love me some depressing, chicken-fried horror. Where is my miniseries of The Fisherman. I was just at that reservoir the other week!

I loving loved this movie but I think a lot of that was from watching it in a pretty packed theater and having an incredible shared experience. People squirming in their seats, looking away from the screen, screaming at a few points, and then pure silence at the end of the movie as everyone carefully walked out. As to what it is? A kid's nightmare, or a found footage movie created by a monster.

watching Skinamarink in theaters, after the first ten minutes I was like "oh my god this is incredible I hope the whole film is like this" and my wish came true. almost fell asleep. I think every screening should have encouraged naptimes, bring your own pillows and blankets, relive the experience of getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom when you were 7. it's very much a "sleepy quietude occasionally interrupted by sudden screeching noise BOOOO" movie, which can be fun but also predictable.
