The manga is pretty good. The art goes from bad but expressive of motion to genuinely pretty great, kinda reminds me of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which is probably my fav western comic in terms of style and hell, probably in general, it's weird and poo poo and has cthulhu penguins

Finished Monster, finally. Dragged a bit at the start but once it got going it really got going. Lmao at 511 Kinderheim only being a waystation towards the Red Rose villa. That was some serious Lost poo poo. Also, you're basically required by law to do the final switcheroo if you have twins in your mystery story. Still, pretty great. Been years since I've read 20th century boys, but this held up much better over the whole run.

This is still probably one of the most chilling scenes in anime. Johan is just such an incredible antagonist. Any time he appears you know something horrible is going to happen and he's barely going to lift a finger to do it. Just deeply, deeply unsettling at all times but in such an understated way

Attack on Titan takes an "ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practicioner" line in regards to Titan powers. Becoming a titan is instrumentalizing yourself in the interests of imperialism, and it's not a coincidence that once the Eldians embrace Titan powers as their path to victory they end up turning into a fascist ethnostate.

In the addendum that was tacked on to the end of the manga Eren's culling of all life doesn't change anything in the grand scheme of history. It merely buys Paradis decades or a century or so before they end up being wiped out in some future conflict. Eventually enough time passes that the tree where Eren's head was buried grows into a massive Redwood-sized monstrosity, awaiting a boy in an overgrown post-apocalyptic Paradis to rediscover the Titan worm and restart the historical process all over again.

Ultimately the true "evil" of AoT is the dialectical process of history recreating conflict for common yet esoteric reasons. Nobody is aware of the full scope of history and can't recognize its causal forces, but Eren can, and what makes him a villain is that he chose to embrace the dialectic of war in favor of extermination instead of using his powers to realize a negotiated settlement with the wider world (which there were opportunities to do in the plot). It's something Eren is categorically incapable of doing because he was raised in an environment where every obstacle to his interests was an absolute enemy which needed to be overcome with absolute force. His vision of the world based on Armin's book is a socially empty space into which Eren could insert meaning by claiming it as his own, but once they breach containment and realize that they're a small part of a wider human world the prospect of having to deal with social reality drives Eren to despair.

Just finished it this evening and, well, this pretty much summarises everything in a way I couldn’t. And given what’s going on with Israel now, is horribly well timed a release.

Thanks for the post, goon.

Great movie. Bafflingly it somehow had shoddy subtitles that read like they were DeepL, making lots of mistakes about gendered pronouns or plural nouns. The movie's 30 years old, surely there's a competent official sub? I know I owned it on DVD at some point but I can't remember anything specific about it then.

I saw that tonight too. The subtitles really marred it. At least twice, the subs cut out a split second after appearing. Also, they used the Briticism "yobbo" at one point?? Really strange to see crap subtitles in a real life moovy thea-ter.

reading anything I can get my hands on at this point because woooo insomnia, love my loving life. Hello, Melancholic is a really good lesbian romance manga. I like how weird and lanky the main character of it is, and also I appreciate really short romance series since I feel like if you make it any longer than 20 chapters, the author just starts beating around the bush. I also started rereading claymore, which owns, and I will freely admit that I always cry during the flashback to Clare's time with Teresa.

Also read a bit of Faraway Paladin since it seemed like the least bad of all isekai and I got so painfully bored with the early chapters feeling like I was witnessing a tutorial from a video game in which the player is learning new mechanics and going through a starter dungeon. at least there was no sex pervert poo poo

If you want decent fantasy manga, definitely check out Dungeon Meshi. I slept on it for a while because I thought it would just be food porn isekai, but it's very entertaining. The food stuff is just kind of a hook (and it's also not isekai).

Heterogenia Linguistico is similarly interesting. It's about a fantasy world linguistics undergrad filling in for his injured professor who travels to a faraway country (continent?) of monsters in order to learn their languages and cultures. Humanity has waged war with them in the past, but pretty much all of the monsters are peaceful by default. I'm not sure if I'm remembering or understanding it correctly, but it seems like the monster people don't have any real written history or storytelling traditions, so they just kinda live in little anarcho communes to survive. There is some skeevy-seeming stuff in the first couple chapters with wolf people sniffing each other to communicate and stuff, but I swear there's no freaky sex poo poo.

If you wanted an isekai specifically, Ascendance of a Bookworm is decent. The protagonist does exploit her knowledge to make money, but it's not nearly enough money to survive, more just a way for her to make contact with the mercantile caste and actually start learning about how the world works. She's not just reinventing soy sauce and sake and effortlessly building a harem.

I dunno about the manga, but the show definitely takes a while going through William's childhood. It's kind of necessary for the story to work, though. William's character has a really strong identity and it wouldn't be quite as effective without spending that much time showing how things shaped him. Paladin-type characters are hard to not making boring, which is why most media will usually subvert them in some way or just make them the antagonists but self-righteous, but I think Faraway Paladin does a pretty good job of making him interesting.

Women are wonderful animals, they should be making music and writing novels about having a complex relationship with your mother.
I really liked the detail of the wolf people seeming kinda rude and abrupt to humans, but that’s because they get so much from smell that a lot of vocal communication isn’t necessary.

Okay, so after the initial set up of Frieren being a weirdo who doesn't understand human relationships due to lifespan, the show is just now bog standard fantasy poo poo that has nothing to do with that.

It didn't even take very long. Disappointing.

The politics of SpyXFamily are pretty incoherent/confusing (and probably best ignored), and the story doesn't seem to know how to deal with Yor's assassin work. IIRC the author has explicitly talked about how it's difficult to portray Yor's activities while keeping her sympathetic to the reader (since it's kind of hard to do a lot of murders while staying oblivious to the true nature of what you're doing). So we get a few scenes of her just effortlessly 1-shotting people, or killing people who are Really Bad, but no details beyond that. Because it's kind of hard to, say, kill someone begging for their life while maintaining the "airhead" persona.

My best guess at the politics of the story is that the writing is coming from a perspective of "they just need to make peace." So at least it doesn't seem to be supporting a West Germany equivalent against an East Germany one.

Shin Sekai Yori is great, but I don't understand why the av/post combo is funny.

I rewatched that show a couple years back, and it still definitely holds up. Theres a few episodes where the animation gets really wonky but overall a very effective series. The first few minutes are such a perfect introduction.
