Walkers hosed everything up

This is the one Mandela Effect thing that hurts my brain because, absent of any external evidence, I am sure that Walkers used to have blue packets for S&V and green packets for C&O. I even have a memory of standing in front of the vending machine at my secondary school and chatting about the changeover with my friends.

But all the actual evidence is that there has been no switch...and people who share my 'memory' can have very different notions of when the change was made.

I'm quite happy to accept that it's a false memory, and I'm mixing up the colour scheme used by other crisp producers (and, to this day, Walkers Squares) and that perhaps the school just switched crisp brands or moved the normal crisps and Squares around in the machine.

I'm not saying there's a massive conspiracy to convince us that S&V have always been blue in order to...[blank]. But it's weird to carry around what feels like a real memory that you rationally know is false. Brains are fascinatingly weird.

I googled this to see what the current line from Big Crisp was on the matter, and got sent to a Facebook page:

Which I think says so much about Britain in the 2020s: "The one that I feel is right through a misplaced sense of nostalgia despite all evidence to the contrary is Right. But I don't even buy these products because a man in the adverts didn't hate foreigners enough."

Edit: K263 is the Köchel number for Mozart's 12th Church Sonata, scored for two trumpets, two violins, cello, bass and organ.

I remember buying some Keoghs in B&M years ago, eating the back on my way across the car park, and then turning around halfway to go back and buy loads more. It’s a travesty they’re not more widely available in the UK, they really are the best.

Excuse me, but Nadine Dorries has been rightly praised for courageously writing a memoir about how all of her political enemies in the Conservative party are actually puppets of a secretive civil servant known only as "The Subway Butcher", a killer who stalks and murders his victims with a large mallet upon the LA underground transit system.

Again, there is a nugget of truth in that most of our privately owned public services (like trains) are owned by foreign governments who are making a profit and reinvesting it into their public services.

It's sort of like the 15 minute cities thing where on the face of it the theory is insane and veers sharply into paranoid rhetoric. However, there is again that nugget of truth in that when councils try to crack down on city centre traffic and emissions, they never do it with innovative measures like pedestrianisation or transport hubs or anything like that, they just slap fines on people driving or parking in the wrong place.

The nugget of truth being that historically, we have always had in this country governing bodies who really don't actually want to do anything, because when the government does things that's socialism, and the more the government does, the more socialism it is.

Yeah, you're right. I thought the same about that tweet that was posted here a few days ago about how The Woke Left was ruining the last few moments of national unity like Remembrance Day and Match of the Day: there is the germ of truth at the heart of that - society is increasingly fragmented and alienated, with ever-fewer cultural and social 'maypoles' for us to dance around (including literal maypoles...). Almost everything is being individualised, commoditised and consumerised and our common experiences - from music and TV shows to living conditions and work prospects - are becoming increasingly threadbare.

Of course the gammons lash out at completely the wrong targets, and their solution (a monolithic social norm reflecting their own views and no others) is wrong but their sense of 'something' being amiss is not entirely incorrect.

There are an awful lot of political persuasions that rely on correctly identifying the problem, and then getting wildly derranged about the causes and solutions to that problem.

See "kids are starving" =/= "it's that woke lineker and his crisps, we should starve them more so they toughen up like me when I was in the war."

We’ve already had the high watermark of extreme idpol I think, an intense focus on the insides of people’s own heads and how to divide the wealth in the bits of the world that are far richer than the other bits has been broken by Russia / Ukraine, Hamas / SW Israel and IDF+Likud / Gaza, and Huawei very visibly catching up on chip fabrication. The material reality of the world has changed since the 2010s, and the west really isn’t richer than the rest any more in a way I don’t think is well understood.

Overall as movements go it was pretty effective, it shifted the Overton window so massively it’s not surprising the right went absolutely nuts. If our society survives the counterstroke we might end up with some actual progress.
