Mostly it gets blamed for popularising the binary moral choice poo poo that was in so many games for a while. Though it came out a few years before the 'depiction = endorsement' narratives got started.

I think that's just sorta later since many more games started doing it, people started looking back and that became the go to early example. At the time I think it was mostly still considered an innovative game-play choice. Edit: And it's pretty easy to give it a pass for that, sorta like how Halloween had a quite a few lovely slasher film tropes in it, but like it made those tropes, and also did them well so you know, best not to blame it from what it inspired, I guess.

That was already a thing when Bioshock came out - Bioshock was kind of sending that up. I mean what is, as the PYF thread was subtitled for a bit, "an acceptable amount of child murder"?
