No. It's necessary.

Takoyaki are mostly uncooked batter too, with a homeopathic amount of octopus. Never was a huge fan of them.

Good point. "Slimy" as a texture is far more acceptable in Japanese food, and maybe uncooked batter in these pancake things is a feature, not a flaw. Takoyaki are gooey as gently caress.

I'm glad someone said something about takoyaki because I thought I was being gaslit about every one being undercooked, but no, it seems they are supposed to be like that. Shame. The concept sounds amazing if they were actually cooked through

I had takoyaki made by some random CT hillbilly and it was basically an octopus fritter and it owned.

I had a video of that when I was about 6.

I remember it being shit.

There does seem to be a thing in Japan about really, really thick pancakes.

FIVE STARS!!
Takoyaki loving rule but I think it helps that they're usually 2-4 bite affairs (depending on temperature) rather than a bowling ball of goop.

Souffle pancakes, but they're usually actually cooked all the way through. It's a light batter with a lot of volume from whipped egg whites, and cooked with lower heat so the inside isn't raw while the outside is brown.

You can find youtube videos of them being made at home without being raw in the middle.

Paan, which is betel leaf topped with chopped betel nut and flavorings. It's more of a chew akin to tobacco chew than a food. Setting it on fire is new though.

What’s the street food situation like in the more happening areas of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto? I realize that I haven’t heard much about Japanese street food at all in my life.

I know this must have been explained before, and I appreciate any links to old answers.

Beda. It's some spices and pastes and seeds and poo poo wrapped up in a betel leaf.

My dad loves it. You generally get them from little carts on the street anywhere in India. (I think in Malaysia, Pakistan and the Middle East also, but I couldn't be sure.)

They are not usually on fire.

You can also buy them in hard candy form. But be aware, it is a very distinct taste. A childhood friend of mine said, after we brought some back for him to taste, said that they tasted like "Dettol lollies"

pictured, the lollies.
