i love that elon musk goes to community notes to find out if the 2 year-old clip of tucker carlson on fox news saying there was voter fraud in 2020 is accurate rather than reading a single article in like the last year about how tucker carlson no longer works at fox news as a result of a two billion dollar lawsuit specifically about fox news knowingly broadcasting misinformation about there being voter fraud in 2020

Honestly I'm quite sure that Doge guy faked that. Planet Xorg is clearly a reference to X and I don't think LLMs are capable of original wordplay.

Also that's actually a little closer to the HHGttG voice than grok usually is, but it's still more in the realm of "what some idiot who read the book decades ago remembers" versus "what some idiot who never read the book and assumes reddit humour is the same thing thinks" that grok usually comes out with. So yeah I would expect Doge just wrote that response himself via inspect element and said grok did it.

Edit: He posted another one where it's more obvious that it isn't using the books as source material.

https://x.com/dogeofficialceo/status/1723340305171091825?s=20

What makes it obvious it isn't directly using the books as a source is it gets the 42 reference wrong. If it was using the novels as the source it'd describe 42 as "the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything" not the meaning. Also Life, Universe, Everything is usually capitalised in this context in the books, an LLM using the books as a source would copy that as it infers grammar based on its source materiel. I'm 50/50 on whether he faked this one too.

"meaning of life the universe and everything, uncapitalized" IS the way a chatbot basing things of everything else everyone has ever written in reference to the hitchhiker's guide might say things though, which is consistent with a chatbot with "be snarky and reference a lot of the properties elon musk thinks it is cool to reference" appended to all the prompts

People getting Douglas Adams' humor wrong is basically a meme at this point. For years and years every adaptation of HHGTTG tried to tackle the material but somehow completely whiffed on what was actually funny about it. This David Wong article kinda got a good handle on how that kept happening:

https://www.cracked.com/article_15631_the-10-best-sci-fi-films-never-made.html

quote:

Why? It wasn't funny. Forget the plot elements left out--you can't squeeze an entire novel into a 120-page screenplay. We'd have forgiven all of that if the movie had made us laugh. But, you knew from the opening musical sequence with the dolphins that things had gone awry. The type of person who would find the singing animals hilarious is not the type who would be on board with Adams' relentless, dark humor.

So what happened?
Comedy is hard. Really freaking hard. I know, I tried it, once. And, in a movie there are 1,000 little things that can ruin it--facial expressions, bad timing, the wrong edit. It takes an expert to do it right. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, meanwhile, was directed by a man (Garth Jennings) who had never previously directed a movie. Or, a TV show. Or, anything having sets or actors reading lines. He had no connection to anything having to do with comedy anywhere on his resume.

Hitchhiker's would have been a tall order for anybody, since most of the comedy was in the narrative language and descriptions, two things that don't come across on film.

No, this project needed a sharp eye, not somebody who would have Mos Def stiffly parroting passages from the book. It needed someone who would take the Douglas Adams attitude and run with it and take the movie we were expecting and give us something 10 times as insane.

The comedy isn't about "snarky attitude" or the way characters act or talk, and the plot of the book is garbage compared to the connective material that far outweighs it. The heart and soul of the books is wordplay, sentences that turn themselves inside out as you read them, wild inventive visualizations, weird insightful bits of social commentary that make you go "what? Huh" while reading a passage about a robot designed to pick up herring sandwiches in a scoop that immediately drops them again. Stuff that humans can't even identify as the funny thing they need to figure out how to capture in a screenplay, and if the best they can do is what's been done so far, good fuckin luck to a rebranded ChatGPT being able to do it.

Especially if it’s being trained by a guy who thinks it’s the height of an injoke to say “Zaphod Beeblebrox”
