Deal with it.
I feel a bit stuck in a rut where most of my victories end up being domination or diplomacy, cultural victories in particular are elusive for me, even when playing civs that specialise in it the opposing civs always seem to have a significant leg up in that regard.

Religious victory is just domination by another name, so that might be a quickie diversion which is familiar. Note that it tends to win early, such as medieval or renaissance, so plan accordingly.

Cultural victory is typically a long slog, as you have to finish the tech tree and have faith to burn. The only real way to accelerate it is to absolutely blow everyone out of the park with unusually early tourism, often from relics. Nzinga Mbande (Kongo's alternate leader) is great for that with their OP relics, so found a religion with reliquaries and go ham. It's a very different experience, and also turn on heroes as heroic relics count. Remember it's not actually culture that's the win-con, but tourism, so don't feel bad if some AI is outstripping you in the purple resource midgame.

Culture is my most frequent wincon, I have done it with relics but usually just gunning for great writers/artists/musicians works well. Between theming and the tourism policies from later in the culture tree your tourism output just explodes around the industrial and modern eras.

Archeology is also great, the AI never does it so you can just gobble up all the artifacts and theme them, too. The great scientist that makes all archeological relics +%300 tourism is bananas.

Side note on archaeologists: each time they loot a relic is +1 era score. They have three charges, so each archeologist built is 3 era score. Pretty awesome you can build that.

Yeah, it's really counterintuitive that culture doesn't get you a culture victory. Tourism output is obscured so unless you know what you're doing it can be hard to understand exactly what the gently caress is going on.

The thing about culture is that it becomes almost trivially easy once you realize that AI civs are more than willing to give you any number of their great works if you’ve got the gold to pay for it, so there’s no need for you to hard invest your economy into theater districts except for when you need slots to put your purchases into.

This means you can focus on generating tourism from other sources, be that wonder spam, national park spam, religious relics or whatever else. And as a bonus, buying away AI great works reduces their culture output as a side consequence, making it even easier to win the game.

I know it was like this in other games but do scouts still get a bonus for looting villages in 6? e.g. more likely to get population/builder vs. other rewards.

They get a chunk of xp, nothing more. You COULD take the double-scout-xp policy card instead of +5 vs barbs, but that's a lot of effort and RNG to just have them claw themselves back to the baseline they had in previous games.

Of course playing on higher difficulty those goodie huts mostly just go straight to the computer players....

Just did a very silly African and Mediterranean only TSL huge earth game. chose Shaka and watched the northern sea collapse into bloodshed almost immediately while I took over Kongo and befriended Ethiopia and Sumer. Total mess. Egypt lost their capital to loyalty almost immediately and by the end of the game, it was just me, Rome, Byzantium, Spain, and my allies. I was the only one that colonized the empty map before it filled up with city states.

Speaking of Caesar, I'm generally a big fan of the game's art style in spite of other people's disdain for it, I think most of the leaders look great, but even I have to admit that the leader pass additions really seem off to me and just do not look good. Caesar and Ramesses get it the worst, I just cringe looking at them and their weird proportions and awkward animations.

I think Caesar and Ramses are closer to how the style was originally before it was changed after popular demand.

Julius Caesar is terribly historically inaccurate I'm told, but he's still ok to look at. Ramses, imo, is a disaster. I'm not sure if it's a too-literal interpretation of some drawing, or the lack of small details in the clothing, or something. It's not that he's caricature, it's just that the model seems so much more primitive than its peers. Compare it to Cleo's new outfit in the same pack.

edit: And Kupe is hilarious, he's perfect. Combined with the voice actor he really does come off like someone's sarcastic mate from down the road.

I just hate his stupid little head and massive arms, it just strikes me as a clumsy design, and his denounce animation looks terrible. Also its noticeable that he doesn't even pronounce his own name correctly, I don't even speak Latin and I know that Classical Latin used a hard C.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUDTxBx4OHQ
Trajan looks so much better, its a much more coherent and svelte design, he's got a nice sense of imperiousness in his sharp features. He reminds me of Caesar (funnily enough) from the Asterix comics, which can't be a coincidence.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w64scyeG2DQ
I cannot stand Ramesses. Everything just feels off, I hate his tiny little arms, I hate his weird looking face, I hate the way his outfit looks like a cheap Halloween costume even though I know its based on a real image. It sort of seems they were trying to base him to some degree on reconstructions of his face, but he looks a lot better there than in game. If I had it my way I'd make his clothing seem a lot more grand, I'd make his hat bigger (it certainly looks bigger in most Egyptian imagery) and I'd make his crook much longer, more in line with what you see again in ancient Egyptian representations of the Crook and Flail, also its kind of weird that he only has the crook and not the flail, why have one and not the other?

Oddly for most of the other leader pass additions my complaints are that they just look too dull, the likes of Ludwig and Sejong seem like the most boring possible interpretations of Civ VI's art style and they accordingly took the wrong turn into the uncanny valley.

The turns to citizen growth is part of the base UI, that's the little white 2 in the top right corner.

At a glance, I'd wager it's surplus food; city is probably producing 8 food, while having 2 citizens who would consume 2 food each, leaving 4 as the surplus.

I've been playing a Zombies game with my buddy since yesterday. In our previous games together every once in awhile the non-host player would get a loading screen at the turn transition. No big deal, we're an ocean apart so I guess I get it. In the new patch the behavior has changed, now we both get a full minute of nothing happening at all before the non-host gets the loading screen, and it seems to happen almost every turn.

So that's not great.

All I want to do is finish the achievements before this thing rattles itself to pieces.

I don't know why, but once this starts happening, it won't stop happening on that save file. And it seems much more likely to happen if you load a save from a previous day. Not much to do but abandon the game afaik :(

Yea I half played it out, totally not worth anybody's time.

Spoilers for the seed:
So you start out on an island alone, with 1k gold, NO BARBS so there's nothing to do but goldfish as hard as you can as Pericles. The era that they start you in lets you explore and find all the others players rather quick once you research caravels, but honestly why bother attacking them? You also have no religion and even if you rush one like I did it won't do much for you, as it's VANILLA GAME RELIGIONS where half the beliefs suck unless you convert the whole world, which it's kinda late to start on that.

Honestly super boring, and with nothing to do (and Vanilla rules) I couldn't tell if the game eras where going by faster than normal speed, lol.

Honestly the idea of a fixed-seed casual competition seems appealing to me, it's a cheap and easy way of doing interesting starts with communal strategy talks without something as full-on as the scenarios. They way they've gone about it however, from the weird patching bugs (which other steam users had) to shoving an ingame banner ad on the menu to the cherry of top of the scenario being actually awful; it's a disaster.

The Steam page's announcement has a ton of negativity in the comments, but not about the feature itself. Anyone got the scoop on what toxic gamer bullshit that's all about?

I haven't been on CFC in over a decade (is it still around even?) but they used to do a game of the month going back to at least civ3 times, and it was pretty much the same thing - here's a set seed (I think they just passed around a starting save file), and a goal, who can do it best.

I'd be down for something like that.
