Bunnings to stop selling engineered stone due to risk of silicosis in stone masons and installers.

quote:

Last month, Safe Work Australia released its report into engineered stone, and concluded a complete ban was the only option.

"Continued work with engineered stone poses an unacceptable risk to workers," the report said.

"The use of all engineered stone should be prohibited."

In a statement, Bunnings director of merchandise Jen Tucker said the decision was made following the report and in consultation with its suppliers.

"While there has been clear indication from NSW and other state governments that they will legislate a ban on the product, we are proactively making this decision to allow suppliers and customers time to prepare for a transition," Ms Tucker said.

"Our decision to stop selling engineered stone was directly in response to the reports released and the prospect of a ban on the sale in the near future."

Ms Tucker said Bunnings was working closely with suppliers about the change.

Union welcomes the move

In a statement, CFMEU national secretary Zach Smith welcomed the decision, which followed union protests outside of Bunnings stores throughout the country.

He said it was "the end of the line for engineered stone".

"Bunnings should be congratulated for eventually doing the right thing and pulling these deadly bench tops from their shelves," Mr Smith said.

A good win for the worker, but is there not PPE that masons and installers can wear to mitigate the risk?

ye olde hierarchy of control says that elimination is a lot better than PPE. There is no need for engineered stone, so just eliminate it.

You'd think so but ultimately no matter what precautions you take, at the end of the day you're going to take off the respirator and walk over stones to get to your car, drive over em to get home, get out and see your children playing with em. It's unavoidable.

Clearly its the bridge's fault, because in no way are the cyclists ever responsible for any incident or accident because they are saving the planet.

Working with stuff similar to engineered stone, let me tell you that elimination would be great for the salespeople and the customer, too. Because it's generally some of the most fidgety poo poo in terms of maintenance, a lot of the cheaper versions are essentially more boring terrazzo surfaces in terms of maintenance, i.e. "imagine if you had marble but the surface was as easy to ruin as a horse was to kill."

Absolutely miserable dogshit material, and every customer is enthralled by "omg, 90 degree angles! you can't do that with ceramics!" and we have to carefully talk them off an idiot ledge that results in their coming back six months later to complain that due to not following very precise instructions in the manual their new bathroom surface is now a lovely piss colour from water stains and they're going to have to abrade it back to normalcy.

Masons, maybe, since they are in a central shop you can have a big air quality monitoring program and dust filtering masks and water curtains and stuff. Probably already do in many cases.

But countertop installers are roofers of the indoors and are allergic to any small time or money costs so will saw off their pinky if it gets the job done below budget. To say nothing of the risk to wreckers or well meaning but dumb DIY enthusiasts.

If it's anything like the situation in the US, most of the people working with those materials are underpaid immigrants working in poo poo conditions without any provided PPE, incorrect PPE, or who refuse to use PPE (correctly).

Technically yes, there is correct PPE that will work great. In reality, it's not going to be used and people are getting their lungs destroyed.
