I sit on a comfy recliner and play PC games with a controller on my gaming laptop connected to the TV. I have no idea why people buy consoles.

Except in the moments when I wish I could play Bloodborne, then I kinda get it.

I actually use a handheld (ROG Ally). When I dock it to play at my couch (MKB or Controller), I use the eGPU to play the exact same game at a much higher resolution at a much higher frame rate.

Having multiple game devices is for chumps.

Doing badly at the cooking qte scene on purpose to see Noctis cut his finger

I liked how on one of the Japanese promo sites for FF15, they had a screenshot of the luxury hotel that costs like half a million gil to stay at, with the text, "I realize I'm a prince, but it's still ok if I use a coupon too, right?"

I mean, at this point, FF has so many iconic monsters that you could totally do an actual Final Fantasy Snap with FF monsters. Tonberrries, Cactuars, Behemoths - it sounds like it could be pretty cool. I'd try it at least.

I’m weird because I obsessively customize my characters appearance to the degree I’ll wear substandard armor in the name of looking good, but rather than look like Donut Steel abominations, My fashion sense leads to me making characters that look like generic npcs. I always use colors like grey and drab dark green. And I outright never use appearance mods because they always clash with the games art direction and graphics tech. Like Oblivion is a hideous game, but to have non-potato people is even more jarring and anti-immersion than the actual potato-people.

It also had hilarious pre-release content, albeit accidentally..

The developers released the most absurdly edgy trailers people had seen in years and everyone thought it was a parody intentionally meant to make fun of the needlessly grimdark protagonists of the early 2000's...until people talked to the devs and realized they were convinced it was cool and totally normal to have a guy blasting Linkin Park or whatever in his magical earbuds while obsessively ranting about killing Chaos for most of the trailer.

Cue lots of people going "Oh hey, so this is a joke right?" followed by "So I watched the interviews and oh. Oh no.".

It did produce this legendary shitpost though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3t5Ni1RW8s

Anyone looking to break into classic JRPGs these days might be better off with Dragon Quest than Final Fantasy.

The mobile releases of several DQ games are considered the definitive versions. Being able to tackle the grinding and other tedium while pooping has opened up the genre to me. I played Octopath because of the portability of the Switch, but that's about it for JRPGs in my thirty years of gaming. Now I'm 50 hours into DQ IV and eager to finish the IV - VI trilogy.

Also, DQ IV looks great on OLED. Can't wait to see how the art styles of V and VI look. I put the mobile version side by side with the 3DS version it was ported from. You cannot sufficiently lower your expectations of the 3DS screen quality/layout to make this feel like a fair comparison. Even the onscreen controls of the mobile version (which you mostly get used to) are more ergonomic to me than holding a big floppy-hinge clamshell 3DS XL.

Don't know what your options are for FF on the Steam Deck. 3DS or mobile versions of those DQ games will be stinko on Deck since mobile has zero controller support and neither is set up for landscape.

Depends on what you mean by 'better' graphics, so much comes down to design choices made by the creators as well. Technically, Twilight Princess has more advanced graphics than Wind Waker, but the art direction of the latter makes it hold up over time way way better, whereas TP is a meme generator for Link's horrid face.

Yeah, I'll take fun over realistic. Let me pick up 100 identical broken swords and pots because I might need them, that's my business - don't punish me for exploring your game and opening all the boxes.

The same is true of stealth, although I do find stealth bonuses satisfying. I should be rewarded mechanically for stealthily if the game wants, not punished for something that sucks.

That's not to say sims don't have their place, but don't sit in the middle. Like, be Gran Turismo or be Burnout 3, don't be a little non-commital guy in the middle.

Even though it's surprising to find it in a "top 50" list, even one that's such a grab bag of bizarre hipster deep cuts, they didn't even spell the title right in the article. (It's not "The" Crystal Souls).
Also on an unrelated note, it was wild decades later accidentally stumbling upon where the game's cool soundtrack was unknowingly lifted from. (the Amiga version of Dune).

More surprising still is not picking the much superior Exile 3. Though I can see the time mechanic doing its usual divisiveness.

On a related note, here's a probably unpopular opinion: Time mechanics (Exile 3, Dead Rising, etc...) are almost always awesome, and I wish more games played around with the idea.

QuarkJets

I have been playing Aliens Dark Descent and it's probably the best stealth gameplay in a squad game that I've seen, but it's also very simple. It's normal, and expected, that an Alien will see you. Your dudes can hide and try to sneak around, and that has tangible benefits, but also you can just run and gun through the game - that's arguably harder but it's a fine way to play. Getting spotted means the Aliens will send more Aliens to the area, and occasionally a lot more, and when there's a horde coming then you're told about that and given a minute to prepare (with turrets, mines, etc), and afterwards you're given some breathing room before the Aliens return. Pissing off the aliens too many times in one level will result in stronger breeds coming, so if you don't want to be stealthy then you had better try to be fast

Stealth missions, fps platform segments, and AI escort segments should be required by law to be skippable by anyone old enough to know the konami code. Maybe I’ll try a few times but if I don’t make any progress in my precious carved out hour of playtime then I’ll probably never launch the game again.

Also we can get rid of boob armor but every 3rd person video game protagonist should have a really great butt I think that’s fair to everyone and would encourage everyone to squat more.
