Someone in one of these threads (this one or the AoS one) was saying that the ghouls looked too generic and the ruff of bones on the guy last week didn't come across right.

Guess Chief Justice McEntrails is here to make up for that!

Every time I see a lovely tournament it has the same exact lovely bare MDF terrain pieces. Must suck for whoever made those that they've become the standard choice of rear end-looking tables world wide. Anyone ever seen one of those sets actually painted up and looking nice?

I've thought about getting some to paint them and see, the problem is I'm pretty sure that the wood is pourous so it'll like drink paint and primer. Also, the smooth flat surfaces are gonna look like poo poo, it probably looks better on textured and detailed pieces oke the me that make u smiths and taverns.

Of course, it probably needs a bit more work beyond painting because the distinct slot and tab design is super obvious.

But a quick google search shows some absolutely banger designs and, as this thread would love, some tragic decisions.

You can plot the smelliness of the local stores on one axis, TCG sale percentage on the other, and you get a straight line with Pat's at the far end. Which is a crying shame because it's a wicked cool little shop, but the smell is always there, even at 1pm on a Tuesday. (I've only been a couple times many years ago, but a couple relapsed MTG friends say it's as bad as ever)

It's not all that bad but yeah, you'll basically want to prime it with cheap black spraypaint and do a couple of coats for coverage.

There's also spray texture paint which would neatly solve both issues in one fell swoop.

If I was doing mdf terrain for a convention, I'd production line it. Pop out all the shapes, spray everything with black primer (not worrying too much about solid coverage), assemble, hit with grey, maybe a couple of different shades if I had the time.

I've painted it for normal use, and it's basically the same, you just take a bit more time and do a few more thin coats so you get a nice even coverage before hitting it with technicals/drybrushing/watered down paint for weathering.

The trick with MDF is to assemble it, then slather the whole thing in a coat of 2:1 water:PVA glue. It seals all the pieces together, fills in gaps, and fixes the porosity. As for the big flat pieces, yeah, those are hard. If the manufacturer adds some shallow cut details like brickwork, spidering cracks, greebles and whatnot, it's fine. If they've just given up on life and left it a blank flat surface, firstly buy from someone better, but then you either add your own greebles or weirdly you want to get a smooth a finish as possible, like you're trying to draw no attention to it at all and hoping your attention passes right over it.

Black Modpodge (never heard of it, looks like just modpodge with black acrylic?) has too much texture to it for me, it shows brushstrokes like mad, tends to form lumps puddles and mounds. Too thick.

I would wrap the MDF models in tissue paper or felt or something. MDF never looks like actual terrain no matter how you paint it.

I only came up with Rott Kadaver-aaargh and Chitlins Thomas.
:sigh:

I've used a thinned wood-filler putty to rough up mdf, but it doesn't always stick right and it sometimes leaves a jarring texture difference.

Would chalkboard paint seal and texture it?

It has absolutely gobsmacked me that GW is actually producing great and winsome models lately, and you really do have to go outside of 40k. Whoever's been doing the Warcry has been off the chain lately, while Specialist Games is just nuts with the Necromunda sculpts as of recent.

And check out this guy! Bela Lugosi's college years! What a charming model.

Stiltboy would rule if the pose was a little more dynamic. Right now it looks like he's awkwardly posing for a photo his magus insisted they take after his first kill, when he'd rather be back in the factorithedral painting the ceilings.

Never thought about it that way but that’s actually a nice aesthetic. Shatterpoint already has some of that feel due to the cartoony minis and limited terrain with exaggerated features. I should actually paint the terrain cel shaded style to add to that look. And add some 2D pieces too, like some bushes and a big tree with a hole in it.
