The new Speaker says everyone is Congress is crazy and on edge today because they have been taking the unprecedented step of working for 10 weeks in a row.

If I had to go to work for 10 weeks in a row, I don't know what I would do either. Has anyone even done that before? Just go to work and then... go again next week... 10 times in a row?

https://twitter.com/MariannaReports/status/1724477449424003499

quote:

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) declared during his weekly news conference Tuesday that the House “is a pressure cooker” after lawmakers have spent 10 weeks together in the halls of Congress.

No moment was more evident than minutes before when Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) came up behind Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and began yelling in his ear, accusing him of elbowing him in the back as they passed each other in a crowded hallway.

“Hey Kevin, why did you walk behind me and elbow me in the back,” Burchett said as The Washington Post interviewed McCarthy. “You have no guts.”

“I didn’t do that,” McCarthy replied.

As Burchett continued to yell, McCarthy laughed and stated, “Oh my god.”

“You are so pathetic,” Burchett said before slowing his steps to no longer be directly behind McCarthy.

“Thank you Tim,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy largely demurred, shrugging instead of answering questions about the altercation and other topics.

The altercation took place as Republicans were filing out of their weekly conference meeting where Republicans debated over the contours of the funding bill Johnson proposed last weekend. Burchett was one of eight Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy as speaker last month, and McCarthy has since continually called him out for prioritizing media attention over governing.

“He’s just a bully,” Burchett told reporters after the exchange. “He just needs to go on back to Southern California.”

Lawmakers often joke that after being in session for six-weeks or more, tensions among members begin to dramatically escalate. The House has witnessed bruising fights that have exposed resentments over the last several weeks between government funding and speakership election fights.

They were still doing official business while selecting a Speaker and scheduling votes.

We're talking about nearly two months in a row of four or five-day work weeks. Could you even imagine what that must be like? It makes total sense that you would try to punch a witness at your hearing.

No, it's kind of the opposite. Dems are grumbling about the "two-step" setup, but are willing to back a clean CR with no cuts or border provisions, so some Republicans are mad that the Speaker might bypass the rules committee (who were threatening to not vote a bill out of committee if it didn't have cuts/border provisions) and use Democratic votes to get a clean 45-day CR passed.

The parts of the government that Republicans consider "good" parts get slightly longer. Which is technically an improvement (?) because only some of the government will be shut down initially.

But, Republicans are also only doing that because they want to keep the parts they care about and the parts that would be politically damaging to shut down open to give them more leverage if they do have a shutdown and are still negotiating.

Kinda funny. Unless something changed since I left Texas their legislators aren’t full time employees as-it-were. The session is short, and the income is meager. You have independent wealth or another job as far as I understood it. He's the CEO of a clothing company, so I think he is probably not going to be hurting with just a part-time salary.

Interestingly, neither his official statement nor the article in the Texas Tribune say why exactly he is leaving. He just released a statement saying he is out (but, not until after the next election) and gave no follow up.

He is a crazy member who is best friends with noted psycho Dan Patrick, so he IS "the fever" and isn't the type of person who will leave because the crazies have too much influence.
