I work at a major airport and bags get stolen all the time. Things also go missing from bags all the time.

If someone really wanted to slip a bomb in a bag they absolutely could. All of the baggage handlers know exactly where the camera dead spots are and they can get in and out of a bag pretty drat fast.

They already do it with drugs

Don’t pack an anything you really care about.

It’s cheaper for the airline to every so often pay someone $2k for a lost bag than to actually increase security.

Yep. The best way to protect your bag is to make it look like it will be annoying and to break into, they usually don't have a lot of time. So unless your bag is misrouted (thus lying somewhere for long-ish time), they will likely select some easier bag.

Depends on the city, the newer subways are pretty drat nice, yep.

I mean, even the old systems are better than anything in the US, but I don't think you're going to get blown away by Beijing and Shanghai.

And the high speed rail is ridiculously awesome , at least if you really comprehend just how much distance you are travelling.

Yeah the sensation of high-speed rail is an odd experience, because it feels like you’re barely moving but the scenery is a blur. The average aircraft is bumpier than a bullet train.

I wouldn't call the subways high tech, they're like any other subway except with giant lines because there's security theater to enter. They're mostly recent construction which might be easy to confuse with high tech. All the new subways look identical to each other since they all just use the same parts/trains/building methods/etc, which is a smart way to save money.

Xi's visit to the US is really interesting when one compares it to the last visit. The article breaks it down pretty well. One thing they don't really unpack is the belligerent attitude China has projected outward and general negative sentiment much of the world has of China as a result. Personally I think Xi may understand that wolf warrior diplomacy may be backfiring.

until they can sort out the fundamental issues with their economy being a pack of lies that everyone finally called them on they can understand whatever they want, nobody's going to take them as seriously as they want to be taken.

this quote in that article amused me:

quote:

"Mr Xi will want to receive reassurance from Joe Biden that the US will not expand its trade war or tech rivalry, nor take additional measures to decouple economically." Beijing has complained vociferously about the US imposing tariffs on Chinese imports, blacklisting Chinese companies, and restricting China's access to advanced chip-making tech.
bro, biden's had 3 years to do all of that and you're largely beneath his notice. you will be until you prove your fascist sham of a government can weather the largest housing bubble a modern government has ever seen intact. shut the hell up.

Why are dictators so fussy about being labeled as such? Like Xi has clearly had a singular goal of becoming more of a mao style supreme leader without the checks and balances previous leaders have had in china. He wants to be a dictator and love it. Why not own his success?

democratically elected people have a gigantic lump of political legitimacy dumped in their lap by the election, so they dont have to be as nuts about legitimacy as dictators and kings do

lots of legitimacy is about seeming. gotta have a crown. gotta have that dictator bling. gotta have your 6 foot tall honor guard (of women, in gaddafis case). gotta have the nice parades of your death squads and missiles.

ironically, in a certain zeitgeist, gotta declare yourself a democratic peoples republic
