I think at least one of y'all (Skwirl maybe?) said you worked for the postal service and/or knew people who work for UPS? What should I expect if I try to apply there? Are the physical demands as strenuous as they are for warehouse jobs where you have to move a lot of weight around and do a physical fitness test before they'll hire you? Cuz I did one of those for a warehouse gig last year annnnnnd I did not pass at the time.

is there a reason you won't just bang out some retail hours? you don't have to think much, you can start to get some income. UPS is not USPS and I'd assume most of their holiday positions would indeed be pretty arduous.

I banged out some retail hours for about 3 months awhile back. It was excruciatingly boring and the management treated me like poo poo and at times tried to straight-up bully me into working hours that conflicted with my school. I strongly do not want to go back to that or food service if at all possible.

One of the things that bugged me a lot working retail was having to walk the store and look for things to stay busy. Delivery, especially around the holidays, seems like a thing where there's enough to do that I won't have to look around for busy-work. I can handle arduous as long as I have a list of things to do.

Ups driver is a very tough demanding physical job and you’ll be working 10-12 hour days at least. You know the ups trucks you see driving around? Imagine one completely full and you have to drive around all day unloading it. Many packages are +40 lbs and some can be 100-150 (150 is the limit). Source: I never worked ups but I’ve been in shipping for over 10 years and have dealt with ups trucks and drivers on a daily basis so I know what they go through.

I believe, or at least it used to be this case back in the day, that UPS drivers are all union and you have to work your way up to it. I am somewhat confident you could probably get a job there, but it'd be unloading or loading trucks at first. Which isn't fun, but you'd get in shape pretty fast.

Or collapse and die, one or the other.

I'd be cool with that. My brain treats that poo poo like a fun puzzle game already, and I need more physical movement while on Abilify just to keep my calories in check since it fucks with my weight otherwise.

I don't HAVE to drive a truck or actually deliver.

That's me and I work at USPS, UPS is different and I have no idea about their poo poo. If you aren't applying for a driving job I don't think there's any physical tests there's just certain jobs you might not be able to do but they'll usually put you somewhere else less physical instead of kicking you to the curb. I don't think anything the Post Office does is as physically strenuous as like a normal Amazon warehouse job, except maybe being the actual mail carrier.

I applied as a clerk in the neighborhood I lived in because there was a postal office right near me and I thought it was for a job being one of those people working in a window that you buy stamps from or they tell you how much your weird package costs to ship, what I actually did was start work at midnight and sort packages into numbered bins so individual mail carriers would show up at 6-7am and have all of their packages in one place. there's two tiers of work and apparently it used to take years to get from the first, where you don't have much choice in what you do and are paid less, to the second where you get paid better, have stronger job protections and have a decent amount of say in how much you work. It took me 3 months to get promoted to that second tier and I know a bunch of people who started work after me who got promoted in less than a month. The promotion is entirely seniority based, but regional, so my experience wouldn't necessarily reflect the experience of someone in a different state, but no one who works with you will get promoted before you if they were hired after you.

Edit: If you want low effort good pay, try and get into custodial. I had a coworker, smart guy, started about the same time, ended up at the same distribution center, I got sorta pushed, but I like the job when I don't really loving hate it, into logistics. I saw him being trained as a supervisor, two weeks later he's emptying trash cans and I said, "hey what's up" and he was just like "It was loving horrible, I like this."

I work at ups and the work is pretty rough. Right now we are entering peak season so every position available is seasonal. You may or may not be rehired in January depending on your warehouses staffing. To get the high paying delivery job you will be working part time 3-5 hours a night for several years.

Oh and unless it changed this past contract it takes 9 months to start getting benefits. It's probably the best insurance you can get in America and is free though.
