https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-67437534 Don’t know if this has appeared on your radar down in England but it’s hilarious. Scottish Health Secretary racks up a £11k roaming iPad bill over the Christmas holidays, due to an old SIM card. In March he offered to pay £3k by office expenses, and the rest by parliament. More recently it turns out that the £11k was predominately spent on the 28th December and 2nd January, when there were two football matches. Celtic vs Rangers on the 2nd, and someone else on the 28th. Now he’s said he’ll pay all £11k himself, as it turns out he used the iPad for a hotspot and his kids watched the football.

I feel sorry for him. Think I said before bigger issue is why is there a company able to charge 11 grand to watch a couple of football games?

This came up years ago. (Like literally about 2005-2007.) Basically, a guy was on holiday in France. He torrented an episode of Lost (yes back in those days.) Next thing you know, he has a bill for like €30,000. But the question really is how. Not how did the customer do it. But how does a company even quantify that ammount. Like this isn't a situation where 30K worth of raw materials were spent. Or you needed Like eight engineers spending hours working a server farm to fix this. Or even you crush a bunch if diamonds to dust and cast Resurrection. This is a tech company going "oh we used up so many 1's and 0's getting you that video. Have a life ruining bill."

Oodles posted:Data roaming. 3 gig to watch one match. Also depends on what stream they were using. If its one of those illegal streams from the rear end end of Brazil, then its unlikely they care about streaming quality over quantity. So you could end up getting near uncompressed feed, wracking up the GB in no time. Back when Twitch was called Justin.tv, I used to watch MST3K on it. Full hour and a half episodes. Left it on one night and burned through our 300gb of MONTHLY allowance back then. Had to pay to expand the cap just so we could use it for the rest of the month. And if its Roaming, then thats another layer of gently caress you pay me for your bits.

Video is pretty big in general, it's not hard to hit those numbers at all even through very occasional use if you do streaming. VVVV It's usually published by your provider somewhere, but again, it's based on mutual treaties between providers so they might not have much of a choice. If they want to have roaming at all they have to pay whatever the local provider asks (and then add some on top probably). Private Speech fucked around with this message at 22:51 on Nov 16, 2023 |

i still just cant comprehend how we dont find out who these people are and rock up and take all their stuff. you can't just charge someone 20 quid for 500mb, which should mean 5000mb is 200quid, then charge over 7grand for 3000mb. Its bullshit. all without telling them. like we should all, everybody in the world go and wrack up these charges to bankrupt the world economy so we can start again.

Private Speech posted:Video is pretty big in general, it's not hard to hit those numbers at all even through very occasional use if you do streaming. I estimate video (including things like zoom calls etc) at 1GB per hour. I'm sure ultra high is quite a bit more than that, maybe 2GB an hour, I know something I looked at over the last couple of months was. Why don't people get local data sims when they're abroad if they're going to a country without some deal with their UK supplier? A lot of airports have telecoms booths one you get through baggage/customs into arrival halls.

stev posted:Yeah that should be illegal. As I said it's mostly the local providers who decide how much to charge, among friendly countries you might have negligible costs but large parts of the world it's not really O2 or Three or whoever who gets to decide how much they charge.

on top of it just being indecent to charge that kind of money the wild jump in billing should have resulted in a bunch of notifications after the first day. ideally that would disable data unless you reply with some understanding but i mean lol
