Especially since the SSD upgrade is pretty simple now. I’ve always had issues with glare through so I’m probably way more aware of it than other people.

Mine has a tracking number but hasn't shipped it seems. Anybody know where they're shipping out of? It was around Chicago last time iirc which could mean I have it before leaving town for Thanksgiving. Only would need about a hundred hours to set up and download crap onto it again, heh.Squiggle posted:Yeah, yeah, the people on Reddit People on Reddit were cursing valve and seemed super pissed off. During the Long Queue Darktimes Decks were all shipped in bulk on the Wednesday if I remember right. I doubt they’re just doing one ship day now but they probably have a scheduled courier pick up that packaged Decks are going to be waiting for.

Looking for some suggestions... I'm a substitute teacher at a high school and just took a long term assignment covering for a teacher who has been gone the entire quarter, meaning these kids have never even met him, never had any any kind of assignments or instruction or work whatsoever, and are very used to the class being a chill hangout period. They're loving out of control, honestly. Like I could probably get fired if admin found out what I let go on in there. Anyway, in an attempt to get some kind of response from them, I offered to bring my steam deck today and have a fighting game tournament. They all wanted to play Smash, so I brought my switch instead, but it worked so well at getting them to listen that I think I'll do this every Friday, on the condition that they don't piss me off during the week. I'd really like to bring the deck and get them some variety. Smash every week would get boring, and there's a club that plays it pretty much every day at lunch, so the kids in that club are just going to dominate. I have some fighting games. I'm going to try to get them to play SF6 or Guilty Gear Strive. I want to see if I can convince them that Nidhogg is cool. However, I'm thinking some of those indie couch games might be good too. Things a bunch of kids could play at once. I loved playing Crawl with my friends, but don't think I could get them into it. I do think I could get them into stuff like Broforce, or Towerfall Ascension, or Duck Game, though. I'm going to try to get them to play Streets of Rage 4 by telling them they get to beat the poo poo out of a bunch of cops. So I'm looking for suggestions for things I can run on a Deck that'd hold teenagers' attention that isn't Fortnite. Is there a good splitscreen FPS that isn't screencheat? Things like that would be great.

My regular 1TB is processing. I'm glad that the matte screen isn't just an LE thing, I loving hate the glossy screen and having the refractive layer built into the bezel instead of laid on top like a screen protector makes a huge difference in terms of screen brightness.

I saw one review mention the screws are better on the OLED. That's great if so - I had a really hard time when changing the backplate for my old Steam Deck because the screws were some of the shittiest screws I've ever encountered and a couple just instantly stripped. In the end I was fortunately able to extract them using a kit from iFitIt (after trying a bunch of other stuff - one screw was about as stripped as it's possible for a screw to be, couldn't even tell there were ever "+" shaped grooves in it).

I'd imagine the demand for an OLED Steam Deck is nowhere near what the demand for the LCD Deck was. There are probably a large portion of LCD-havers like myself for whom the features the OLED Deck brings to the table are nice but not enough to be a really compelling reason to upgrade. And then let's not forget that the LCD Deck was unproven, meaning Valve had more trouble sourcing parts (IIRC the OLED screens in the new Decks come from the same manufacturer as the OLED Switch?). Or that the LCD Decks were announced in the middle of a global pandemic and released at a point where there were still near-universal supply chain issues resulting from that pandemic. So yes, the Deck is much more stacked in favor of a smooth release this time, so much so that Valve didn't even bother with the reservation system they did for the initial release of the LCD Deck and it STILL went smoother.

There’s just a general maturity to the entire process at this stage. Valve will have a much better handle on expected shipping numbers, their own production schedule, getting them out of the door etc. I think the next challenge will be when they’re launching a product that a much greater number of customers will want to upgrade to, in addition to a potential sudden increase in new customers. That’s gonna make the Steam Deck 2 launch interesting.
