sleep with the vicious posted:I'm going to Vegas for the first time next week for a conference, not really a big partying or gambling guy but will have dinners and some nights out on the company dime. Staying at the Mirage, any tips or ideas to make the most of that area? Walk the strip later at night. Scenic views with prime people watching. It's a bit of a walk but I've slowly gone from the Tropicana all the way to Encore with random stops on the way.

The ones in from of bellagio are already up and a good chunk of the sidewalk on that side is closed. The fountains are still running, seems like the best public free view is on the bridge from horseshoe to bellagio

That's honestly a good point, I'm not in Vegas at the moment but there's a ton of construction around the strip with random stuff closed to the public. I do wonder how long it's going to take them to clean everything up and get it back to normal.

One thing I noticed is they had recently resurfaced Las Vegas Boulevard, but with the most obviously lovely asphalt possible. It’s gonna need resurfacing again in two years, tops. Vegas!

Is it lovely? I've seen pictures all of Instagram and TikTok where it's clearly super smooth. I really, really want them to resurface Paradise Road and Harmon Ave.

It looked pretty porous to me. Vegas doesn’t get much rain but on the occasion it does it’s gonna seep right into the asphalt and bust it up. Baking in the Vegas sun the other hundreds of days a year won’t help. I am also not a civil engineer, so here in OK asphalt lasts about five years under the best circumstances.

I'm looking for recs on something for my wife and I to do during a Saturday afternoon in Vegas. We've been like 30 times and know the city well, just looking for hidden gems or the big attractions that we've consistently passed over. No transportation so we'll be looking for something near the strip this time. Museums, galleries, exhibits, and other attractions seem like our best bet. What are your favorites?

From what I understand, they planned the F1 stuff in Vegas so the first setup would make teardown and setup for the future ones faster, easier, mostly reusable, and cheaper. I'm assuming they figure the cost of redoing it is less than the money they will pull in with the extra accessibility and curb appeal while it's gone or whatever. Hello all, I'm looking for restaurant recommendations. I went to Vegas last year with some friends and we decided to go back in March. We went to the Bacchanal Buffet and Momofuku and those were the two highlights for my friends and they want to go back to the same places or comparable restaurants. Are there any places of that caliber that would be worth checking out instead?

Mukulu posted:Hello all, Vegas has no shortage of incredible restaurants as long as you're willing to pay. Wynn buffet is on the same level as Bacchanal, even if I still slightly prefer the latter. AYCE buffet at the Palms is really good too at a price point a fair bit under those two, unless you want to go on a Wednesday and hit up their lobster night. There's a ton of great celebrity chef restaurants if you're looking for something akin to Momofuku, even though they're not my jam. Morimoto in MGM Grand is one I remember liking in the past. There's also always Hells Kitchen at Caesars if you want to go real touristy. If you're thinking steaks, I recommend Golden Steer off the strip, or Oscar's in downtown. If you want to stay on the strip, I think Prime at Bellagio is worth checking out. Also if you want something that's a bit of a more unique experience, check out Bazaar Meat By José Andrés at the Sahara.

But as a more upscale suggestion Peter Luger just opened at Caesar's and if it's like NY it will be great. I was looking at hotels elsewhere and accidentally searched Vegas and was amazed to see the prices you can get at TI, having stayed there I feel like I should evangelize it a bit, you can get three nights midweek for barely over £100 at a spot where it open to debate if it's mid- or north-Strip. Room quality is fine to good, easy to get to the rest of the Strip, downtown and the convention centre, in room fridge with a CVS on site. May depend on your specific requirements but well worth a look.

Mr. Wiggles posted:They're repaving every year for the race. https://www.reviewjournal.com/news/news-columns/road-warrior/how-often-will-the-las-vegas-f1-circuit-need-to-be-repaved-2788874/ quote:“This track should last six years, if not eight-10 years,” Miller said. “We do recognize there will be times where we have to go back and make repairs … so we’ve got a protocol process in place (with Clark County) to make sure it goes back to the same as we did it the first time around.” Locals are almost giddy for this thing to fail because the amount of infrastructure it requires is immense and all of it being temporary stuff that's supposed to be warehoused somewhere and then trotted out each fall like it's a Disney ride's Christmas overlay is just absurd. I know that residents complaining about traffic is the least interesting thing in the world, but they built a temporary car flyover on East Flamingo by Battista's behind Cromwell. Like an instant-noodles version of a freeway overpass. Setting it up closed so many lanes, and of course the city police sat in squad cars all around the traffic mess waiting to arrest people committing a road rage but not doing anything to be in the street and direct traffic to help keep everyone sane. The costs are "we'll figure that out later" (and they've floated government subsidy, and gently caress that) and they're hoping Strip employees don't mind taking the Monorail to work, and even out of towners should understand how unhelpful that system is. Between all that and a lot of micro-declines like Bellagio destroying the row of desert-compatible trees that lined the front of the property for 25 years, the Strip is going to be really weird after summer until this race thing bombs and they stop doing it. Anyone ever done New Year's Eve in Vegas? Was thinking of going solo as I'm at a loose end. I gather The Strip closes to traffic for fireworks, how difficult is it getting around? I may stay Downtown for it.

I'm pretty sure they plan on closing the Strip for pedestrians for NYE. It's fun but it's not going to be cheap and it will be busy. In other news... https://x.com/LasVegasLocally/status/1722358257589932323?s=20 https://x.com/LasVegasLocally/status/1722334450070241595?s=20

Stay in the biggest resort you can and don't go outside. I did NYE in Aria on it's opening year and had no problem getting around most of the day but after it got dark I didn't leave the property. Because it's a curvy tower the actual 12:00 event I watched from one of the big windows in the hallways while looking upward and seeing the fireworks launching off the roof of the building I'm inside. Every other casino I've been in in NYE is weirdly quiet and lonesome once everyone runs off into the street. Now if you're actually into being around the energy of total strangers in various states of alcoholic delusion, then I can't speak for it because huge public crowds are a risk in America. Downtown should at least be somewhat safer as they'll probably be hauling out the metal detectors on either end of Fremont. Craptacular! fucked around with this message at 02:37 on Nov 14, 2023 |

Horseshoe seems like a good value proposition yeah? We're trying to do a Vegas mini-vacation on the relatively cheap. Tuscany also seems like a valid option. Also planning on Penn & Teller, Cirque du Soleil, Mac King. Any other cool shows? Was going to get tickets for Piff the Magic Dragon when I saw he's on tour to our area around that time frame so got tickets for that instead! Grand Canyon - is it worth renting a car or is a day trip tour thing fine?
