I think the thing is basically that none of the other documentation we have suggests that Ea-Nasir was selling especially low-quality copper (and especially not poor quality as we understand it), the complaint is the outlier.

I absolutely respect the intention, but BCE is doing nobody any good. It's good to stop having Christianity baked into the time system, but we're still counting from the (probably incorrect) birth year of Christ. On the other hand, switching to any other system would be a nightmare.

Kurgesagt sells a Human Era calendar that just adds 10,000 years to the current date to account for the general beginning of civilization.

Arsenic Lupin posted:but we're still counting from the (probably incorrect) birth year of Christ. Definitely incorrect; one of the gospels puts Jesus' birth as during the kingdom of Herod, but Herod died presumably around 4 BCE. Although I'd actually argue that's a point in favor of sticking to BCE/CE; we're ultimately just talking fake bullshit anyway and counting up/down from a year where nothing of exceptional note happened, so let's just rip out the part of the date system that's never been right anyway!

Biplane posted:We should switch to Star Trek stardates. In the original series star dates were completely random, except they need to be consistent within a single episode and count for a day. So star date 42167.5 would be the equivalent of noon and 42168.5 would be noon the next day, but the next episode might have the first captains log saying its star date 28954.3. I kinda wish they'd stuck with that instead of pinning it down to something people could tie to our timeline with exact dates.

I propose dating history from the earliest confirmable historical date: The Ugarit Eclipse of March 5th, 1223 BC. Happy 3246, everyone. Also, we should use a 13 month year with 28 day months, with an annual calendar-truing holiday every year, and two during leap years. I will not be taking any questions.

He offered the messenger some low-quality copper for cheap and told him he could take it or leave it. It was perfectly normal to sell copper at different quality levels. Low-quality copper could still be refined; it just took more work.
