Apparently YouTube adds a 5 second delay to the loading time if you're running Firefox. Because that's a perfectly normal, none evil thing to do. https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/17ywbjj/comment/k9w3ei4/

I’ve said this a lot of times but if you use some sort of redirector you can just use invidious instead of the default youtube interface and it addresses practically all youtube fuckery. Also it’s compatible with sponsorblock. There are a lot of alternative frontends for various services, you can use someone else’s or host them yourself. Each option has a whole slew of privacy implications and possible mitigations. If you have concerns I can answer some general questions. https://github.com/mendel5/alternative-front-ends

Nothing on YouTube is worth enduring a single ad for.* I also suggest that if you're willing to endure a single ad for a YouTube video, you'll put up with anything else the platform puts you through. Maybe you don't see it that way, but I guarantee you that they do. If you are ever forced to view an ad in YouTube, consider just not using it and find something else to do. Not because this will send a message to YouTube, or result in some change in their behavior. Digital consumer boycotts are meaningless and don't work because most consumers will suffer through anything to alleviate their boredom or get their fix. Do it for yourself and your own dignity, unless for some reason, you have no choice but to use the product. In which case, you have my sympathy, this must be a maddening time. *I hope this is obvious: if you have no choice but to use the platform for something vital to your life or living, this doesn't apply to you. I'm sorry you are being forced to use a Google product. doctorfrog fucked around with this message at 19:17 on Nov 20, 2023 |

Well, YouTube won. I wanted to watch youtube on my AppleTV without ads and google has made that pretty much impossible without their app which of course can't block ads. I decided to give in a pay for premium but then i saw that it had gotten more expensive and is now $18.99 which I'm not willing to pay. So, I went through the extra effort to setup ytdl-sub with my jellyfin server to just download new videos from my subscriptions a few times a day and it works so much better than actually using youtube. I suspect I'll stop using youtube soon when google somehow prevents video downloads through tools like yt-dl.
