Honestly, the Battlemaster needed to be off the field at this point. Goonlance is in rough shape, and there's still the hunchback to contend with. It was absolutely winnable, sure, but this is gonna be a lot of repair.

Good luck not getting got by the Hunchback, Goonlance.

The Hunchback should be a much easier kill simply on account of it not being able to fire its primary weapon directly behind itself. Also having paper-thin rear armor and volatile ammunition.

A properly repaired assault mech will be a big boon yeah.

Just not sure if there's gonna be enough info here to accomplish the long term strategic objective. Info's needed on the fake SLDF, and while skirmishes have given them several casualties, there's no significant information so far gained on them.

Maybe we can check the VIN to see if there's a paper trail? If that's even still a thing.

The Falcon's pilot is an officer, so while not as big of a catch as the Battlemaster it's still a significant boon.

Not even close. Meh. The US built like a thousand destroyers in WW2, all named after various Navy and Marine heroes, and it wouldn't surprise me if 980 of them were officers. And the ones that weren't were destroyer escorts, which don't get a lot of glamour. I'd be surprised if anyone who didn't serve on one could name any DE outside of Dennis, Samuel B. Roberts, Raymond, or John C. Butler (the four DEs assigned to the famous "Taffy 3" at the Battle Off Samar).

The USS Doris Miller, a Gerald Ford-class nuclear supercarrier, is by far the biggest, most important USN ship to be named after an enlisted sailor, and 1) it's not even fully built yet, and 2) the name was a very pointed political statement, given Dorie Miller was an African-American sailor who has been repeatedly denied a Medal of Honor (both passively and actively—Frank Knox, US Secretary of the Navy at the time, was a horrible racist) for his actions at Pearl Harbor, and the naming decision was made during Trump's presidency.

Dragon’s Teeth 3-12

It felt strange to wait in ambush for a Hunchback.

Theo had faced worse, of course; but anyone who said they weren’t afraid of engaging a Hunchback at close range was a liar. It may have been the smallest ‘Mech with a heavy autocannon, but that gun was no joke. Even his Hoplite couldn’t withstand sustained fire from a Hunchback for more than a few seconds. Theo just hoped the enemy Mechwarrior would be running low enough on ammunition that they wouldn’t be able to down the entire lance.

Fortunately, the Banshee had done a number on the Hunchback’s armor. Theo wasn’t sure how thin the little juggernaut’s armor was getting, but a penetrating hit might at least put the big gun out of commission. Left to just its fists and lasers, the Hunchback would be significantly easier to take down.

He counted the seconds, trying to track the Hunchback’s position by the muffled sound of its footsteps. It didn’t have any way to jump over the locals’ reinforced firing step, which meant he still had a few seconds before it could lumber into his targeting reticle.

I think the best I can do is sprint to 1312 and provide supporting fire with my L laser. I can get closer if I run to the other side, but I'm not sure if I want to put myself in AC 20 range. Plus we want to try blowing up the right side, that's the one with the AC 20 on it.

Thoughts?

Either torso on the Hunchback is good to shoot. The right torso has the AC/20, but the left torso has all the AC/20 ammo.

Looking at the Hunchback, it has a remarkably even damage spread across both sides. Everything is very thin, however. I'd suggest angling for the right side as that leg is exposed and a mobility kill is just as good.

Proxy posting probated hoplite:
I think the Hunchback only has 3 shots of AC20 ammo left, so baiting it to shoot at bad odds could be the way we get the win here.

I think maybe the best option for this turn is if the Mongoose takes 2411, which gets it a shot on 6es while return fire needs 11s. I believe the Blackjack can also move to 1212 via 1113 to shoot at 10s, while also needing 11s to be hit. (3base+4range+2target move+1 partial cover).
I can back up to break LoS, and if the Mongoose's large laser hits anywhere but the CT or LL that'll be a breach for me to toss LBX dice at.

The other option I see is just charging forward to 1607. I can get in a kick on the punch table, assuming my left leg doesn't get clipped, but I'm almost certainly eating an AC20 hit myself, because the hunchie will only need a 5 to connect. On the plus side, I prooobably can take a single hit anywhere but the RA or LT without issue... But any right side hit is likely to take all my firepower off.
Thinking on it more, I think I have to take that chance now. There's a ton of options the hunchback can take to box me in next turn if I stay in place. So really the options are more go in for broke now and gamble on taking a hit where I can tank it, like my CT or RL, or retreat somewhere with slightly more protection and better setup for next turn to keep away from the AC20 own zone, like 1511. 1511 at least requires a 7 for him to hit me.

Jokes aside we appreciate it. It would be really, really bad for us if the Hoplite just kinda. Had a brain episode while a Hunchback bore down on them.

Question for you folks, what's the cutoff point for +4 evasion? Because if it's 9 tiles I have a perfect move planned. If it's more than 9 I have a somewhat less perfect move planned

3 hex for +1
5 hex for +2
7 hex for +3
10 hex for +4
This is part of why cover is so useful. Really, the mp tax to enter cover isn't for the defense, its for not suffering the penalty yourself. You can still get all the +1 defense of a forest by going behind it instead of in it, but your outgoing fire suffers the +1 too.
