lol no. My dad doesn’t do used stuff (and neither do I). As for backup, he really just wants spare copies of important financial stuff in the event of his laptop dying or getting stolen, he’s not hugely worried about fire or anything else on the computer.

I hope he’s careful with his beverages and doesn’t care about bitrot or file corrosion that may happen during the transfer that he won’t notice until he tries to retrieve it, or his wife gets mad and smashes it, I can go on forever.

He’s also a strict ’no food or drink near the computer ever’ guy. I doubt he knows bitrot is a thing (and I’m not sure I want to spark a mad panic) and the latter is not going to happen.

The plan is to set him up with either an external hard drive or an external SSD (I haven’t decided how much Santa loves him yet) and Time Machine.

His laptop, while probably not at immediate risk of death, is probably in its final life stages. One way or another he needs a replacement soon. The whole ‘switching to Mac’ thing is a reaction to windows 11, and cheap laptops generally (‘d say his issues are roughly 70% ‘windows is increasingly doing poo poo he hates’ and 30% ‘You wouldn’t have this problem if you’d spent more than $800 AUD on a laptop)

With an added pinch of ‘I’m the tech support guy; I haven’t used windows in over a year and don’t plan to again, and I’d really prefer not to be constantly on the hook for troubleshooting that dumpster fire’ especially with my dad’s added peculiarities thrown into the mix.

I think the chances of either being stolen are pretty slim given our lifestyles, and the chances of both being stolen are fairly close to impossible.

The laptop and the hard drive are only in the same building for about 8 hours a day, and he’s sleeping 3 feet from them for like 6 of those hours. Even setting aside the fact that break ins are much less common here, they especially aren’t going to happen In a house where every window is covered with steel bars, and every external doorway has 2 locked doors to go through which are typically ether solid wood or metal bars; there is always someone at home, and I don’t go to bed until dawn, which is when he gets up to leave, so there’s like maybe a 1 hour gap when both of us would be asleep at the same time.

Also not a huge fire risk in a big sprawling house where every internal wall is solid brick a foot thick, and networked fire alarms in every bedroom and hallway.

A safe is not something I’d be able to convince him to spend money on.

Being as your Dad comes off as a paranoid autistic person, this is ridiculous, especially if he's going to dole out big bucks for a Mac.

edit: you can get a fire safe from Amazon for $39.98 and it comes with the kit to bolt it into the floor of this "sprawling" large household.

the paranoid autism is in constant competition with the penny pinching greek accountant.

We are talking about a person who spent 3 years trying to buy a new car because he calculated the rate of inflation since he bought his existing car and settled on that figure as ‘what a new car should cost’ then spent 3 years futilely trying to find a car that ticked every one of his boxes before relenting and spending what a new car actually cost.

edit: and I can’t imagine he’d be willing to bolt something into the floor either, if that was even possible with our floor. Even if he was, I doubt my granddad would agree to it, and it’s his house.

I updated my post!

He is *very begrudgingly* buying a MacBook Air, which costs more than double his original budget, after years of calling me insane for spending so much on computers, because of the shocking experience he had with a cheap windows 11 laptop he bought and then returned shortly thereafter. He’s backed into a corner, much like the car

I mean it was 7 years old at that point, so it was a newer model. To be fair, he has some very restrictive criteria (some of them a matter of genuine necessity, for eg he has very specific cargo space requirements) and he spent a very long time trying to find a non suv that would suit his needs because he would have preferred a lower vehicle (easier to get my granddad into) before ultimately concluding that it wasn’t to be.

he doesn’t care about that, his old car was the standard 2.5L ( I think?) engine, and his new one is the turbo, and it’s by far the most powerful car he’s ever owned.

I mean, I know what I want, and I know what he wants (I also know what he should want, if he wasn’t so obstinate). I don’t really get a choice when it comes to acting as the tech support, I have to live with the guy. Any issues generally come down to his total unwillingness to just ‘take someone’s word for it’. He wouldn’t put any more stock in what a stranger says any more than he does in what I say.

In any case he’s stopped talking about anti virus. Whether that means he’s come around to my way of thinking or he’s just going to start up again later remains to be seen.

current conversations are all around whether he keeps using MS Office or makes the switch to numbers and pages, and how well his existing spreadsheets will carry over; but I’ve offered to let him test some of them on my Mac so we’ll soon see.

To be clear at this point the conversation ITT is as much about venting and entertaining everyone as it is about getting advice.

it’s honestly a coin flip whether he buys his Mac air in the Black Friday sales (a nearby retailer is selling it for like 20% off) or if he’s still talking about it a year from now as his ancient laptop creaks ever closer to the abyss.

It’s all very basic poo poo as far as I know, but my spreadsheet experience extends roughly as far as ‘I want to make a pretty table’ so my only contribution there is to let him test poo poo on my computer so he can decide for himself.

I just tried it on Monterey and got nothing. It has to be a separate app, I think. Also, it would be a neat little feature, but the whole ‘not able to save’ kind of kills it.
