The biggest issue is that you have a very limited amount of time to figure out what's going on and what to do about it. Best case scenario, you're on a straight , empty freeway but if not you're probably hosed.

If your car starts accelerating through town and you aren't hitting the brakes before you start going over 100mph then you have bigger problems.

In a regular car you can stand on the brake pedal, but then that will overheat the brakes and they don't work anymore. So the best thing to do is probably use the time that your brakes are slowing you down to find a safe way to crash. In a 550 HP car it's probably still accelerating while you're standing on the brakes. And then the brakes overheat and you're accelerating a lot faster. So yeah good luck.

Could be a number of reasons for dropping the accelerator not related to anything mechanical with the car, like she squeezed too hard or the coke was too strong.

If you stand on the brakes - *really* stand on the brakes - very few cars have got such lovely brakes/so much power that wont stop the car even with the motor at full power. The Bentley has got exceptionally big powerful brakes. The issue of brakes overheating in this situation is more the drivers are not actually burying the brake pedal and panicking while trying to work out how to throw the car into neutral when half the shitboxes on the road don't have a easy way to do this anymore.

Isn't it a regulatory requirement that the brakes are required to be powerful enough to stop the car with the engine at full throttle?

You'd think 'have manual override' would be a manufacturing requirement for a large piece of machinery that can easily kill people.

Yeah this makes sense now that I think about it. Or maybe you have a driver who is older, or for whatever other reason can't press hard on the brakes. A car that weighs 2.5 tons would need hella brakes to stop quickly. OTOH 550 HP does mean that if you have gas/break confusion, you are going 100 MPH before you work out what's happening.

Grey Cat posted:Have we taken into account the possibility the driver did it on purpose? Possibly to avoid the concert or breaking up altogether? No, the various forum experts have already weighed in and the verdict's that the SCADA software controlling this Luxury Range Rover (that has more lines than SpaceX's rocket landing sequence) has caused its ceramic brakes (that can literally stop a runaway Boeying 747 without turning into hot plasma) to cease up launcing the car across the falls, and somehow Toyota's responsible for it all.
