Weird that he's can't take salvage or some of the typical, "I'm pulling this thing back out" recursion type cards you might have expected he'd be able to take.

I think he looks fun to play though, I'm definitely more interested in these folks as a whole than I was in most of the Scarlet Keys ones off the bat. Darrel and Charlie are the only ones that really hit me just looking at their cards, deckbuilding and signatures.

He can use the new card Pushed to the Limit, which isn't scavenging but does let him use an action ability on a discarded tool and shuffle it back into his deck. Combined with his signature card, he does have a little bit of recurring going on.

He could also use Well Maintained to get his signature card back off an asset once or twice.

There's definitely some support coming for him in this xpac we haven't seen yet. There's no level 1 improvise or upgrade cards outside of blue right now, for example, so that makes little detail in his deck building makes no sense as of yet.

My biggest hope would be a way to tutor Wilson's signature so I can make stupid old shotgun decks based around his ability. That or some at-a-cost blue recursion or card draw.

His deck building rules are interesting and look pretty versatile, as befits a Handyman, I suppose. Need to see more of the new tools and weapons but I assume a bunch of them were designed with him in mind.

I think Amina was my breaking point because I just can't get excited for a 3333 now. I guess he might be ok with using Tool weapons or clue Tools but his whole ability is based on him just getting to baseline competency at something, but only when using Tools.

If he gets good support he might end up decent I think. But I'm not excited for him.

I was going to post something like that - if there isn't at least a base 4 in their do-something stat I'm never going to play them. I didn't because I think with tool weapons he'll be a good fighter, and his signature might even push him into above average.

I think he can be an ok fighter, but all the other 4 Combat score fighters also have an ability that helps them in some other way. His ability just lets him get to 4 effective Combat score and saves a few resources.

I think I would play him as a flex. Might as well get something out of those stats. Grab a bandolier, pitchfork and a lantern or lockpicks.

I can't see anything jumping out at me. Its specified as being only one action so you can't discard Sledgehammer and use the big attack. I think the best thing would be to just discard Gravekeepers Shovel for a free clue or Lantern for a free damage.

I don’t judge new investigators until their set comes out. Sister Mary was totally boring until they revealed the spear, Nepthys and favor of the sun. There could be more skill cards and effects based on your lowest stat.

Amina was a botch though. She’d still be interesting at 5223.

You absolutely can ad hoc with big sledgehammer. The action icon refers to a type of action. "Ignoring all costs" includes the the three action icons. I think that still makes Wilson a flex rather than a dedicated fighter, but makes him hit like a drat truck when he wants to

E: pushed to the limit also works. So that's many ouch

Some nice Tool support. Tinker is good as a cheaper, more flexible Bandolier that's only for Tools. I like it, especially for Hank and Wilson who are naturally positioned to use Sledgehammers and Pitchforks already. Chem Set and Riot Whistle are the only Tool Accessory's so far so I suspect we're getting more.

Hand-Eye Coordination is just really solid all around, plenty of ways you can get good use out of this.

If it's broken, it's probably my fault
I'm sure this is a topic else where, but I didn't find it with a quick search.

The more I play the more it seems that melee weapons are the better choice over firearms for pure guardian monster killers.
For the most part you don't need to worry about charges, therefore spending additional actions either playing a copy or another asset/event to refill a firearm. Plus you get those potential cards back to do other stuff with in the deck.
Hand slots seem mostly equal, there's pretty good single hand melee and firearm cards, then better two handed ones. So it's not like you're getting more bang for buck there.
Some firearms let you circumvate engaging or retaliate, but if you're a good guardian you probably don't mind, or you used one of the freed up asset cards to get riot whistle etc.
Few enemies are immune to firearms and vice versa but I guess that's hard to plan for unless you know the scenario well.

I only see a handful of upsides:
Some ranged weapons do a shed load of damage, which makes pulling them out and blasting the big bad guy a good use, but you wouldn't rely on it as your staple 1-3 damage enemy weapon
It's cool, who cares if it's not as good, pick some guns
You're not playing a pure guardian monster killer and just want something to dish out a handful of points of damage before getting replaced by another asset

Am I right in this or am I missing some firearm magic sauce that makes them really viable to monster killers?

thebardyspoon
Jun 30, 2005
I think that is generally considered to be true and a bit of an issue yeah. I wouldn't go so far as to say that guns aren't viable, they are perfectly viable on standard at least in my experience but yeah, generally melee stuff is more simple and has less failure points, you just play it and use it.

Common theory is the designers just thought stuff like the machetes restriction would be more of an issue than it was and then forgot to make guns commensurately better than melee to make up for the hassle of having to reload them. They've been doing some work with making them better with the custom modifications card in Scarlet Keys and some more ammo refilling events that just do useful stuff, I'm hoping for at least one more thing like that and possibly a decent one handed high level firearm as well at some point.

It’s interesting that the bow is still a viable weapon, especially with the Ally who can give you ammo once a turn (or if you are Ursula, the museum curator who can hold onto it without taking your hand slots). But meleè weapons are generally better than guns which are better than spells due to things like extra ammo, Blessed ammo, bless weapon, sleight of hand, etc. The hyper reality shotcaster is more flexible than any melee weapon because you can use any stat on it, and the attack spells from Edge of the Earth are a must have in guardian because they don’t fight for your slots.

I also love Nathaniel for having a different paradigm. scenarios like the midnight mask where he can absolutely circumvent terrible enemies by dragging them back from where they do the most damage, or summoning them from unpleasant locations.

Melee weapons are simple and Just Work until they don't. There's a lot more bad guy cards that penalize you for melee weapons than there are ones that penalize you for firearms or spells.
In general the direction for firearms has been "higher possible damage and efficiency ceiling in exchange for lower possible floor." With Custom modifications from scarlet keys, firearm gets a convincing niche as highly reliable damage sources. But if you are going firearms, you have to put more effort (cards & actions) into making them work. You need ways to get more ammunition in them and you want events to take advantage of their trait.

On one hand, I'm kinda pleased my analysis was right.
On the other hand, I'm upset there wasn't a "ah but you didn't consider you can play firearms like this" post

I threw together a Mark Harrigan deck with firearms in mind. Custom Modifications, One in the Chamber with plans to go deeper into it.
Seems like it could be fun to end up with all your XP dumped into Custom Modifications on the M1918 or lightning gun.

Anonymous Robot

Yeah, firearms are absolutely viable but you do need to value the cool factor over being maximally efficient right now. Custom modifications seems like it goes a long way towards improving it (having not played it yet) but it does require investing your build in it, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Seconding that I’d love to see more support for a single-handed firearm build, and if we want to get really pulpy, maybe a two-fisted gunslinger. Parallel Joe?

thebardyspoon
Jun 30, 2005
Probably gonna be parallel Jenny isn't it? Since she has dual pistols as her signature and they'll need to make them better, though I guess those are one thing that takes up two hands whereas you mean two one handed things.

Whoever the lady is on that new hand-eye co-ordination card could be a pretty cool gunslinger type.

There’s also plenty of design space for gun events and skills left. Why not another event fighter like Nathaniel, but with an ammo management gimmick or something?

Nephthys
Mar 27, 2010

I would say that Melee is absolutely better for Guardians and Survivors but outside of Tony, Rogues should really be using Firearms over Melee for the simple fact that they need the big numbers from Guns like the M1918 or Typewriter or because you're running Dirty Fighting and the .25 Automatic. You could do Dirty Fighting + Switchblade 2 but I'd consider even that a bit dicey.

Thanks for this. The starter packs came out while I was still working at a board game shop pre-pandemic and were too expensive to justify all at once even with the discount then. Man, having to get 4 tokens into the bag by the start of his turn to use his ability is rough. I'm sure he'll get support, but he'd need a lot to get me to consider him tbh. The Paradox archetype always seemed like just way more effort than was worth it.
