I think the biggest disconnect for most older people is that they can't really comprehend the idea of actively discussing topics like this (since it's always been pretty difficult to do before the internet - people just passively absorbed information from the media of their choice). I'm pretty sure my parents think that I get my beliefs/ideas from listening to a podcast or something. From their perspective, that's just how you learn about current events - from finding/choosing media you like and listening to it. While people joke about "posting," I think the sort of thing we do here is unironically one of the better ways of engaging with media. It's not just you seeing the various articles/tweets/etc, but also lots of other people, so you can see other people point out if things are wrong, etc. And it also just means a lot more eyes finding information and showing it to others. I think an internet forum is one of the better contexts for this, because it doesn't have the issues Twitter/Facebook have with being manipulated by the algorithm, or Reddit elevating popular posts to the top.
