Lol, Mushoku Tensei fans are special. The new session has broken even more brains because they now also have to explain the "erectile dysfunction saga" and how it brings so much depth to the protagonist (don't worry, he gets cured with magical Viagra).

Was that from his The Rising of the Shield Hero review? I don't actually remember how he reacted to the protagonist dating one of the two enslaved children he owns (after she gained enough xp to level up to her adult form or whatever). Definitely a trippy review, since he outlined why the anime was trash (aforementioned child slavery, the normalisation of the same, the inciting incident being a false rape accusation), but apparently loved the """tactical depth""" of the battles or something.

this would have been about his Mushoku Tensei review, his Shield Hero review was mostly really negative, as a kind of "this anime has a lot of really cool ideas in it (this is a true statement) but also it explicitly endorses slavery! and also at some point the protagonist is going to sleep with his child slave! and even the cool ideas stop existing after a while so that they can show off how cool and powerful the protagonist is some more"

if you were approaching it in possibly the worst possible faith you can consider it a positive review, but it really was not.

(he still praises mushoku tensei and by now I know he knows about the child slave in that show)

He really likes its "world building" which amounts to "dragon quest, but also badly understood eu4". When a reviewer says world building it means they have no taste.

edit: world building, like deconstruction is one of those phrases that nerds use almost exclusively as a cargo cult term that has nothing to do with what it seems intended to mean. They know they've heard of fantasy and scifi series being praised for "World building" in the past, and that it's an indicator of a good work. Therefore if they like a fantasy or scifi series, any exposition must be good world building.

I think MB is also way too deep in a genre space where "What if Dragon Quest?" is the beginning and end of the world building most shows have, and I think it's really skewed his standards. It's like when I see those people on the internet who say Goblin Slayer has good world building because..."something something chess game between good and evil".

(he still praises mushoku tensei and by now I know he knows about the child slave in that show)

This encouraged me to rewatch the review and I was wrong about one thing: He doesn't like it for the tactical stuff and explicitly says the fight scenes are bad. I was completely wrong there.

Instead, he likes it for having character arcs, interesting world building re: the game system, ideas of multiple heroes, etc., for the found family vibes the main character has with his enslaved kids, and for the main villain being incredibly hateable.

But I don't think it was a negative review. He frames it as a debate between those who think it's the worst isekai and those who think it's the best and ends by saying it's average.

Maybe I'm missing context and he was definitely operating at some level of irony (e.g. the joke about how having no incest as an unexpected positive), but I don't think I'm coming to it from the worst possible faith. If a reviewer spends a good amount of time praising aspects of a work and ends by calling it average and enjoyable, like I don't think it's wrong to view that as a positive review.
