Best roguelike is Spelunky. Its one of the cleverest games I can think of, there really isn't anything like that. It feels so carefully designed in every way. Spelunky 2 was a bit of a disappointment. It was still Spelunky, so it was really good, but it felt like it kind of cluttered the game without building on it much.

ADOM was my first roguelike but I couldn't beat it and I looking into guides I never would, least not without relying on them, I could barely remember the keys for all of my actions and even when I did they were tricky depending on what you were meaning to do with what and where.

Then I got into Powder on my phone and that was fun for a while, I think I beat that one, I vaguely recall things getting harder or changing each time you did? Long time ago I forget. That one felt kind of gambly at times, you could get a good sequence of items early on and steamroll a ton of floors without much risk.

I always assumed it was a gacha game, which I guess is kind of like a genre.

Into the Breach was perfectly fine for the one complete playthrough I did of it so it was a solid 45 minutes of entertainment.

Dofus or Wakfu were pvp games weren't they? It's been ages though, could be wrong

They were, but their pvp was very ehh. Given, i only played early in Dofus's lifespan, but low levels had summon monster cancer problems and high levels had pet class imba problems, and players could spamlock each other with duel requests because their pvp chat interface was still in its infancy. i think it was never "fixed" but moderators started cracking down on it? The joys of games developed in Flash. Most players built for pve but pvp had a really different skill loadout, so you could troll randos with an actual pvp build if that was your thing.

There was some big faction thing that I never got deep enough into the game to really understand, which I think was the primary driver of pvp activity. I'm sure it was good... enough, for 2005, but tbh pvp is just too stressful for me.

Chess embraces the rocket tag mindset necessary for a good grid-based strategy game. I think that's what you need for true strategy rpg pvp, but this has the problem of eliminating the power progression rpg players crave.

All of its various owners have had trouble figuring out what Neopets is and how to adapt to modern era and phones. The current owner is trying to get the existing site fully functional again, but every step of the way just uncovers massive tech debt and messy coding that ties into other tangles. Most of the changes they have made have weird unintended effects.

Either way it's basically a casino containing various minigames, whether it's people playing it earnestly to customize their pets and collect poo poo, or the people who play it like a weird financial game of just trying to have the most NP/stuff.

I don't think it's a roguelike, but I really like this game called Unreal World. It's made by some Finnish hick over the past 31 years, continuously updating the whole time. It's a "survival in the woods" game, but it's really nothing like the ones they make now.

The guy who makes it has older versions for free on his website https://www.unrealworld.fi/urw_downloads.html

If I were going to play a Diablo game today it would probably just be Diablo (with Hellfire expansion pack) because there are several games that do the Diablo 2 style arpg better than anything the Diablo series.

Oh wow, in computer science class there were a few free games that went around, sold at, battle for Wesnoth, elastomania, and unrealworld. I never actually tried it myself, battle for Wesnoth and soldat I liked just bc I could easily edit the graphics in paint or whatever and save it and the game just uses the new ones and I'd try to spread my altered graphics to the people who actually played it.

I should check out unreal world, the kids who did play it got really into it.

I remember I played Neopets when it was brand new. My neopet ended up breaking some kind of copyright law and they changed it into another one, and that made some kind of glitch happen where i gained tons of neopoints every day until I had a billion or so and was subsequently banned because it was probably easier than actually dealing with it.

Khanstant

Yeah Fuzzio was like a furball with floating arms and shoes, who vaguely resembled sonic and Rayman combined. I don't think they actually got copyright c&d or anything but changed it to Kyrii, some ugly squirrel jackrabbit thing idk, it's not their best design.

I got my account frozen ten years for cheating bc I was cheating to sell get some easy stuff to boost value of my account I wanted to sell at the time. They unfroze it this year but deleted all my neopoints and items. Not long after I won an item worth 1.8 billion np, but even before that the economy is so broken I made more than I did playing it for years as a kid in a couple weeks.

Neopets failed to transition to phones so badly, the website only has mobile pages for some of the site and games only recently work because ruffle flash emulation makes some games work again. They never made an app version babies could spend their parent credit cards on. The other competitors to Neopets never had as big of user bases and never got bought out by other companies, just chugged along as their own thing and they all have sites and games that work and are designed with mobile in mind.

Neopets has a page called game graveyard that's just tombstones of various flash games they retired from the site. One of the things you can collect in Neopets are avatars, and one of them is only gained through refreshing the game graveyard page over and over until it is awarded.

That's just good game design right there.
