It’s darkly funny reading about interwar Poland being loving insane, whatever was going on with the Czechs (which was not harmonious democracy), Austria shopping around to oppose Hitler, Romania shopping around to oppose Hitler, Italy shopping around to oppose Hitler, and Britain and France only caring about an anti-COMINTERN alliance.

I decided to start reading up on the Spanish Civil War, and first, lol anarchists, second aggressive anticlericalism went great, and third the Spanish Republic was at best cut loose by France and the UK, but honestly it looks like they were outright sabotaged and Franco had support in Gibraltar and across the Pyrenees. The British 100% were aiding Franco through Gibraltar, the name of the book on it escapes me though.

Germany's only silicon manufacturer is threatened with closure

RW Silicium produces the basic material for microchips and solar systems in Bavaria. Now the long-established company could become a victim of Germany's chaotic energy policy.

Zurich. Germany's last remaining silicon producer, the Bavarian company RW Silicium, is facing the final end at the end of March 2024. The owner of the plant, Heinz Schimmelbusch, head of the raw materials company AMG, said this in an interview with the Handelsblatt newspaper, citing the high industrial electricity price as the reason for this: it means that the energy-intensive production of the critical raw material is no longer profitable. "An electricity price at the current level is fatal for silicon metal production," says Schimmelbusch.

Added to this is the current low price for the semi-metal, an important raw material for the high-tech industry. Silicon is needed for the production of microchips and solar cells, for example. The price of silicon with a high degree of purity is currently quoted at around 7.7 euros per kilogram, according to data from the financial service Bloomberg. In February 2023, the raw material cost four times as much.

The AMG CEO therefore explains: "Since the summer of 2023, we have been looking very intensively at how we can maintain production. So far, however, we have not been successful." AMG originally wanted to make a decision by the end of the year as to whether the company wanted to maintain silicon production in Pocking, south of Passau. "We have extended the deadline by three months, until the first quarter of 2024," says the AMG CEO and major shareholder.

This means that deindustrialization in Germany is threatening to affect the domestic production of a strategically important metal: The EU Commission lists silicon as one of the critical raw materials whose local production should be promoted.

It's fine it's not like silicon manufacturing impacts gdp by that much anyways.

I think there's merit in both the need for a Rat Race to diffuse tensions (elections that don't actually change the direction of the country, industries that aren't vital to survival, some sort of system where the sociopathic can waste their time earning a high score), and in some sort of romanticism (be it religious or otherwise) to inspire unity & creativity. Yes, the USSR technically tried the latter, but I'm interested in how many actually bought into the 'New Soviet Man' push, and how many saw it as transparently motivated.

I don't think either are responsible for the collapse of the USSR (IMO that was first and foremost a misplaced belief that the US and Europe could be bargained with & charmed.)

no i dont think thats it. all the old school communists were pretty clear that socialism should be able to deliver nice, material things and a wealth of use values. people will want better things, you cant live off ideology. the capitalist view is that socialism couldn't deliver because it doesn't work. the socialist view is that it DID deliver, massively - the socialist bloc was massively better off than the majority of humanity, they just couldn't catch up with the imperial core because of the centuries worth of head start the US/british had, plus the sheer devastation from war and post war economic blockade and strangulation.

the USSR started crumbling not because of blue jeans but because its leadership cratered the system with privatizations and poor re-introduction of market forces, and it stopped delivering. the majority of people in tiananmen square came there not because of a belief in liberal democracy, but because the shock therapy-lite lifting of price controls and resultant inflation had cratered their lives and livelihoods. the CPC backtracked after tiananmen and frog boiled their liberalization + kept essential state control of a lot of things, and survived because things got better. the soviet leadership rushed on ahead and the ussr died.

That and the imperial core isolated them from accessing resources where they could. Its not that Communism couldn't deliver Bananas or oranges, its just the number of countires that did grow these was far more limited in the Socialist world than the capitalist one keeping any left programs out of power in their former colonies at all costs.

EU set to push Xi Jinping to stop Chinese firms getting around sanctions on Russia

quote:

EU leaders will personally ask Chinese President Xi Jinping to rein in 13 Chinese entities accused of circumventing sanctions on Russia.
They will ask him to put a stop to the practice at a crunch summit in Beijing next week, and his response may determine whether they decide to name and shame the companies in the latest package of sanctions.

The sanctions are designed to stop companies linked to the Russian military from accessing European-made goods, according to several people familiar with the summit preparation.

Chinese firms were initially excluded from the bloc’s 12th package of sanctions, but the names of the companies in question may be added to the list if the EU does not secure a firm commitment to act.

Important member states, including France and Germany, prefer to raise the issue with the very top leadership in Beijing.

There is a sense that decisions are highly centralised in the Chinese political system, and while dialogue continues with Chinese diplomats in Europe, Brussels now wants to take it to a higher level.

[....]

The European Union estimates that up to 70 per cent of sensitive, hi-tech products reaching the Russian military are coming via China.
In June, after consultations with Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong and representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, Brussels dropped plans to add five Chinese companies to a blacklist as part of its 11th package of sanctions.

The Chinese side said it would work to ensure those businesses stop reselling hi-tech goods made in Europe that are flowing to Russia’s war machine, EU sources said.

EU leaders will be asking Xi for evidence of what China has done to try to curtail the practice, based on the diplomatic commitment made in June.

A second potential deliverable is to get a commitment from China to re-engage with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s peace formula.
Beijing dispatched its special envoy Li Hui to a second meeting of more than 40 countries to discuss the war in Ukraine in Saudi Arabia in August. However, Li skipped the follow-up in Malta, and with a new round of talks planned in the coming weeks, Brussels wants to see China come back to the table.

The leaders will ask China, once again, to use its influence to halt Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, but expectations are running low on this front.

[....]

China has railed against the use of unilateral sanctions. In June Fu told the Post “the Chinese government did not commit [to] anything … that’s the bottom line” when asked about cooperation with Brussels on the instruments.

He added: “We understand the concerns of the EU in terms of trying to prevent the circumvention of the sanctions, meaning that some of the items from the European market might be re-exported to Russia and so … according to their view, that needs to be resolved.

“We’ll see what happens in the future.”

Next week the European leaders will also discuss peace efforts in the Middle East and the issue of Taiwan, where Brussels is braced for possible tensions surrounding the island’s presidential elections in January.

This Marxist in the belly of the beast asks why would I give a flying gently caress about a comrade's theology?

The question is their political economy, their historical worldview. Atheists can be and have been some of the worst idealistic metaphysicians that ever sullied our godless earth. The earliest respectable attempt at a materialist historical theory I'm aware of was written by a devout Muslim. Whether a comrade thinks about the struggle in material terms or not, is infinitely more important than, and not neatly correlated to, whatever they imagine about the heavens.
