I know some people were unhappy with the artifact's champion options, here's a very quick, simple way to have a gun that singlehandedly handles both Barriers and Unstoppables completely out of the box. It's slow, but it works.

i haven't played since forsaken and thought it would be fun to re-run the campaign and maybe check out season of the wish.

well, there is no campaign anymore. i also don't know how to access season of the wish, though the director tells me its "active".

returning players spawn in the tower (at least, i do). there's lot of random stuff in the director. do i actually have to play all the intervening content? do i just guess the order?

i'm sorry to ask this dumbshit question in the thread but i legit spent close to 2 hours trying to figure it out myself last night by bouncing between the game and google.

i gave up and started a new character to see what happens (i believe its running me through the Destiny 1 intro mission, which i've never played)

anyone return to the game recently and have any insight?

it is not a dumb question, destiny 2 is utter dogshit at onboarding. the season of the wish storyline "starts" by farting you into a mission automatically. if it hasn't done that for you, then i have nothing useful to share because i don't know what the gently caress.

Forsaken Campaign is gone, although Ikora has a curtailed version of the first mission that will also roughly summarize everything that happened between Forsaken and now if you talk to her. I would recommend making Ikora your first stop. She'll also have some quests to get you up to speed with the new subclass 3.0 system.

If you'd like to play Season of the Wish, you should be able to buy it in the store. I dunno if it'll automatically start the mission after that, I assume it would be in the Dreaming City if not.

If you want, you can go to orbit, hold L2 (or whatever the equivalent would be), and tell us all of the stuff that's there or tell us all the stuff your director and quest tab is shoving in your face and we can help you parse through it.

Look in the helm in the director. It's where seasonal stuff js. Also do new light quests. Or just log out a character and log back in.

I appreciated Verdant Forest for being an activity you could do theoretically infinitely. It was fun to see just how far you could get.

I'm pretty sure I prefer Haunted Forest to Haunted Sectors.

Either way, it was nice to see Bungie get some mileage and make some actual fun activities out of what was probably one of the worst areas they ever put into the game.

The timeline in the [top right?] of the director has some catch up quests which will fill you in on the major events of each expansion. It's not signposted or highlighted for returning players at all, but it looks like a weird crest. The quests give you a snippet of the opening mission of the DLC followed by a cutscene that summarises what happened in the seasons that followed.

You've found the new light quest which is as near as new players get for onboarding, and after that I guess the idea is you're so impressed by the game that you buy all the dungeon keys and xpacks.

The general consensus seems to be that if the legacy pack is on sale (which it is at the moment), it's good value because it includes the Witch Queen, then if you still like the game go get Lightfall so you can get strand.

"fight through random hallways full of dudes to fight big scary dudes in large rooms for decent rewards" is a very simple formula and it's honestly baffling to me that destiny has come so close to a codified version thereof so many times and yet always fell short of adapting it into the game proper

I think part of it is Bungie's insistence on doing something 'unique.' it always ends up being janky somehow but they keep trying

This is funnier when yeah you realise 90% of seasonal activities are classified by the game as either nightfall or menagerie.

At least Spire last season and Coil now mostly have enough enemy density to keep things interesting - a couple of the coil rooms could stand to up the spawn rate a bit though still.

people get mad about content re-used in its entirety. strikes, for example. battlegrounds. doing the same routine from start to finish. the solution is to chop up content into tiny little bits and rearrange it in random orders. that's what the forests did, that's what menagerie did, that's what every successful roguelike did. people get mad about hearing CAME DOWN HERE AS A SQUAD OF NINE and CRYSTALLIZED SOULFIRE and OPERATION PICCOLO over and over because it's the same song and dance every single god drat time with no real variety to it. you always do the same poo poo in the same order and listen to the same lines and it's grating. grinding. crushingly tedious. the first line you hear sets your expectations for the next 20-30 minutes and that kills the magic. there's no discovery, there's no wonder, it's all just more routine.

if every strike and battleground encounter was isolated and chosen at random to make up the length of a strike, you can bet your rear end players would love it. there's an entire loving genre proving it.

It needs to not be a weekly rotation and actually have random hallways, enemy compositions, modifiers, and buffs to get/buy instead of the same thing every time

It's kind of like how Destiny always falls just short of a firefight mode

Lair is fully randomized, but it's also short and easy

Coil is supposed to be hard enough that you have to strategize and build for it, which also means it has to be on some level predictable

On the other hand, it also doesn't have locked loadout, so you could in theory let players respond to learning what the next challenge is, but everyone messing with their build after every segment would kill the momentum

I know it’s not an in-game solution, which is the crux of the complaint, but if you just listen to audiobooks or any remotely good podcast this poo poo ceases to matter. I haven’t heard strike dialogue after the first run in like four years

the audio is just an example, the actual point i was making was that strikes are the same poo poo from start to finish. if you're on europa, you immediately know that you're going to be loving around in the guts of the coldamidion killing some fallen until you get to a big room where you fight a big hydra and also another smaller hydra. load into savathun's throne world and you're going to be running around in a mind palace and then mucking about in a swamp and then fighting THE LIGHTBLADE once again. pop into the EDZ and you know you're going to be escorting a shard a couple times and then hopping around a dam until you fight a big man who's just desperate to show you his rear end.

it's not the dialogue that's the problem, it's that there's no variety in the sets. the playlist itself may be random, but that's just shuffling what wrote memorization you're calling upon for the next while, not providing any meaningful discovery or reaction within the activity itself.

Meiteron posted:

yes, and it rules. however, coil is not here to stay, and that's the issue. bungie is acting like a loving saturday morning cartoon villain with new plans every episode instead of taking the plan that almost worked (or in this case, did work) and improving upon it until it's perfect.
