Also depends how lovely driving is in comparison. PT inherently has some compromises - fixed stops, no direct connections to destination, wait times, sharing space etc. We have very good public transport here by any measure (usually ranked one of the top in Europe) and I live close to a metro station that can take me directly to the opposite side of the city. Still, it's a 10 minute walk, add a 5 minute wait and it's 15 minutes in which I could be halway to my destination in the car. My weekly football game is 50 minutes away by PT or 25 driving:  As it takes place late, especially during the winter the trip is pretty awful. Imagine being exhausted, steamed from the shower, and walking 10 minutes in freezing rain to the stop, then waiting 10 minutes in a windy tunnel, then bouncing around the (thankfully empty) train for 40 minutes. Then walking in the rain again. Fundamentally, there's nothing you can do to improve this experience. Driving just gets relatively worse during rush hours. I think the goal of 15-minute ciites and in general is/should be to make most common trips - work commutes, school, daily shopping, doable without a car. Or ideally without any transport really. If you didn't have to design everything for these peaks of crowds going one way than the other at the same time, the infrastructure could be significantly scaled down.

I can walk to work, and I live almost exactly between two BART stations, about a kilometer to each one. There is a bus that runs right past my home and to one of them regularly. It's great to get into the City and do things. However, I also do some work up in Marin County, and it is a loving nightmare to get there. I have a car, but I use it as little as possible.

In London the vast majority of people don't have a garage or anywhere else safeish to park a car. That changes the calculus quite a bit, you're not just stepping outside your front door straight into your car. Then at the other end there's very limited parking at your destination. If you live near a tube station and the destination needs 1 line change it's pretty much always going to be faster than driving.

I lived in NYC and I'm here to tell you: The vaunted New York Subway system is rear end. It's better than most of the USA's pisspoor public transport, but it's C-tier or lower compared to almost all of the major cities in Europe.

Not as good as say Victoria B.C. where you just dont need a car but it's decent and oyu can get 30kms from the Sydney CBD on marked trails. Not much you can do about the geography but e-bikes are now much more a thing. I think in the end what we are looking for is not just PT but just moreover good non car transport. Being able to ride to a station, get on a train or bus with bike rack areas that is high frequency non timetabled (ie services within 10mins or less), get to my destination stop and ride to final destination is what I would call the perfect public transport network and... uhhh... Sydney actually is for most of it actually does do that? Edit : And with the new light rail going through Sydney CBD it's suddenly become an actual decent place to cycle through safely. Metropolitan busses are the only form of transport that makes me travel sick. Long haul coaches are fine, but the stop-start of busses and the inevitable bone shaking vibrations they make when idling just turn my stomach. I’m pro public transport but personally I will still avoid a bus if I can.

I spent several months in Germany, Hannover and Berlin, in 2015 and other than driving from the airport to the hotel and back I very rarely used my rental car. It was great having nearly everything within walking distance and anything not was cheap and inexpensive to get to with mass transit. I'd love to live in a walk-able city and only drive when I wanted to.

I like to look out the windows and have access to my data (I tend to listen to long DJ mixes), and the streetcars are way easier to get on and ride for free than the subways.
