FX doesn't usually have a problem with that, they aired Baskets, Cake, some really odd poo poo. Though this is now during a period of Disney consolidation, so we should probably be asking why Disney dropped the show.

I thought the show was fun and I liked the characters, but they wrote themselves into a corner with supe-killing flu in The Woods It jumped the power level too much and the Homelander/Butcher cameos were inevitable All in all it felt like they had some really good characterizations and specific scenes they wanted to shoot, but they didnt have any idea how to build a strong storyline separate from the Boys so they brought in a bunch of cameos to cover for the non ending

It definitely doesn't have the writing chops that the boys characters/plot had, but it continues the themes pretty well. The plot twist of Sam and Co being the villains while the evil school was the good guys was unexpected and welcome.

I can't remember how far Butcher's slid into moral depravity, or whatever, but he tends to target abusers empowered by the system. He might also be lovely -- he's definitely an arsehole -- but I don't remember a systemic program of child abuse level of evil from the guy. Shetty ran a Menegle club for teen victims. She was definitely evil, and the school was generally fairly awful bordering on late capitalist hellscape so I'd say it was evil too. Certainly not "the good guys"

Yeah about that the comics did a good job threading in Butcher's time as a SAS officer, first as the bonfides of a badass then more grimly and very reminiscent of Ennis' other works, how war utterly fucks you up and turns you inhuman. Something the show hasn't really dwelled on. But ultimately it does fit and make sense. But with the show making supes more sympathetic and the people trying to get rid of them more flat, and here I'm specifically talking about Shetty, I'm worried we're going to end up with the same bizarre message of every other superhero movie, that really the ones seeking to change the status quo are the bad ones, and supes, who sometimes gently caress up are necessary to stop them. Maybe that's why the ending of S1 of this show left a bad taste in my mouth. It started off with superheroes almost murdering people to show off to their friends without any repricussions, to them being real "heroes" by snuffing out a concentration camp breakout, whose survivors had become just welcomingly unhinged to deserve it. That's pretty gross if you think about it too much. That's what happens when the writers threw out the better themes of the admittedly uneven comic series but then didn't try to replace it with anything else. The defense of the status quo over everything else.
