The funny thing about Mama is how many great actors they pay to show up to present awards, versus how few kpop groups bother to show up.

Also its hilarious that Ador have so much beef with Mnet they didn't even bother with an acceptance video for artist of the year

My top 5 was NewJeans, Triples, XG, Stayc and Carly Rae Jepsen. Think its my first year since 2016 without twice because it was a such a strong year for new releases.

Used to go to a bunch of their concerts in 08-ish and have some photos of them on some old hard drives. Good times.

2023 recap for me

Favorite Groups

Kiss of Life - Great debut and follow up, really promising future.

XG - They continue to put out great stuff with interesting concepts.

Itzy - Bet on Me and Bratty were killer, and they followed that with a fantastic Japanese album too.

Idle - Allergy and I Do were some of the best songs this year, Queencard took over Korea and was one of the most fun live songs I saw.

Le SSerafim - Fire in the Belly finally hooked me into this group as hard as Ive has had me since debut, specifically the live performance. Perfect Night was a great track too, showing a different side from them.

Pixy - They had a grueling tour and still were so great and sweet to fans and had solid releases (Falling is a highlight). They remain my favorite nugu group by a mile and I really hope they can stay around and keep doing their thing.

Ive - Kitsch and I Am were two favorites, Off the Record is one of my favorite MVs of the year.

Newjeans - Cool with You and OMG were highlights of the year. Their Bonnaroo performance was great.

Twice - They're still the queens.

NMIXX - A great year of diverse music and previews of what's to come are even more promising. Still my favorite performers and their dorky personalities are the best.

TripleS - My group of the year which came as a surprise to me but after looking back at this year it was clear they were my favorite new artist and favorite overall. Everything they did was great. Their discography is already rivaling Loona's, even if nothing has quite hit the level of Hi High or Butterfly yet (Invincible came really close). Incredibly consistent, super charming girls, and the company is handling everything really well so far.

Soloists

Eunbi - Continues to release the most interesting post-Izone music.
Key - Another solid year for Key.
Jihyo - Loved every song on her solo.
Wheein - One of the best start to finish albums of the year.
Chuu - Had no clue what to expect from her, but the album is fantastic. Best post-Loona music so far, by a lot.
Taemin - Guilty is his masterpiece.

SOTY:

Twice - Moonlight Sunrise
Queendom Puzzle - Charismatic
Dreamcatcher - Bonvoyage
Limelight - Madeleine
OMG - Summer Comes
Yena - Wicked Love
Ive - Off the Record
XG - Left Right
Newjeans - Cool With You
Itzy - Bet on Me
Idle - I Do
NMIXX - Love Me Like This
Taemin - Guilty
TripleS - Invincible

Favorite concerts:

5 Pixy - Seeing them perform in a small dive bar for 200 screaming fans was so cool and unlike anything you would normally get in a kpop show.

4 Dreamcatcher - Saw them both tours this year and it was really cool how different the shows and setlists were. The first was a trip through all their classics, and the latter was most of their recent titles and a lot of great b sides. They are the least formal on stage and just seem to have a lot of fun together.

3 Idle - Even better than last year's tour. The solo stages were especially great. Yuqi and Minnie's especially.

2 NMIXX Showcase - They're just so drat good.

1 - Twice R2B tour - Just incredible. I was lucky enough to see 5 shows and every one of them was fantastic. Not a single time did anyone seem tired or just going through the motions. Highlights were seeing some of the Japanese tracks in encores, finally seeing Like Ooh Ah live, seeing them cry and smile every time they sang When We Were Kids, and being front row for the rain encore in Atlanta.

Favorite photos: This year was obviously big for me personally because I put myself out there and am now consistently working in the scene with tour promoters and publicists. Shooting film at the Twice tour last year reignited my love for concert photography and randomly reaching out to the Pixy tour folks to shoot their show on a whim turned out to be a great time, but it was really Dahyun sharing my photo with those kind words that cemented it for me. I was in the TSA line in New York when a friend sent me her post and I got pretty emotional about it and the TSA agent asked why I was so nervous lol. Having my favorite member of my favorite group say she loved my photo was surreal and meant a lot to me. Getting to then shoot Idle and Dreamcatcher was a dream.

And my favorite shots from the Twice tour (LA, Houston, NYC, Atlanta)

The shot ❤️

I have a Kpop editorial portfolio here if you'd like to see all my work this year and all my Twice shots here.

Wanna say thanks to the folks here for being a cool chill thread to share this hobby with and for the kind words and support when I share these with you all.

[ASK] me about OS/2 Warp
My year highlights were enjoying seeing newjeans blow up, discovering XG, and then getting excited about music again. Not too many individual callouts or 'omg this track' type stuff. I just like to see that the field in general seems to be getting a little bit more experimental and weird. girlcrush isn't the only thing on the menu any more

Very funny to be agreeing with you guys about 2023 being a really good year for k-pop, but with a completely different list. Mine's once again mostly boy groups and it was possibly my favorite year of music ever. Favorites releasing some of their best stuff, tons of good rookies and a couple of groups (The Boyz and Golden Child) that really surprised me this year.

For such strong year, there was zero doubt about my song of the year. I came into 2023 being at best a casual listener of some of The Boyz's title tracks, but they put out a ridiculous 3 mini albums and a full-length this year, and I loved every goddamn song.

Special shout out to my favorite song of 2022, WayV's "Good Life", which released at the very end of last December and would've come in at number two.

My personal views on Justin Timberlake aside, the remix of 3D featuring him blows the Harlow version out of the water.

But goddamn the Usher remix of Standing Next to You is miles above even that.

I miss Crayon Pop even though it seems like all their lives are much better now. They were one of the earlier kpop groups to perform here in Australia in the early 2010s before kpop really blew up, so for quite a few people I knew they were in fact their first Kpop concert.

Twice teaser just dropped. The url links to Universal Music site to presave instead of JYP, so I’m curious if it’s an English album. Or maybe those are all Universal now, not sure.

Itzy full album in January as well with 5 solo songs and a total of 7 MVs, very good time to be a JYP fan.

Real tough call between Cool With You and Ditto for my favorite NJ track. Ditto came out like the last week of 2022 but I think it counts as a 2023 release?if so, hard to argue against it as SOTY.
