Nap Ghost

UZI is only a 2-ship this time (myself and Zephi) conducting BAI, focused on C2/LOG units IVO Laguna Cabeza de Mar along the Y of Highways 9 and 255.

Risks:
-SA-11s should be suppressed or destroyed. Still risk of SA-9, HQ-7, and MANPADS. Entry at 16,000 feet if possible is preferred until diving on our target.
-Try not to get blown up by other flights' bombs.
-Heaters. Carry 100% flares, no chaff, use a program or toggle that CMS liberally. I expect this is a one pass job.
-Failing to find the enemy. Infantry along the front could be tough to spot even in clear conditions, but it's likely too risky to loiter looking for targets while inside some unlocated SA-9 or SA-18 WEZ.

Take off and nav per ATO card above.
Switch TACAN to 66X (BULLS) enroute COLO.
Marshall North of COLO, with the lake marking COLO as southern end of our north-south holding race-track.
This is the final muster/hold point, north of red forces.
Our Go-code is GAUCHO to signal commit strike flights.

This is a 15,000 foot view of the target area, approaching from point COLO. Note the row of lakes marking the enemy rear support areas.

We're not really in danger of striking blue ground forces unless you veer wildly off course.

Return legs:
Egress North COLO then direct to SAWG, TACAN back to 69X. Do not egress east; that takes you over enemy ground forces and into blue flight paths.

Additional notes:
-I will use 60ms delay on rockets. It's not a one-press salvo, but you get maybe 3-ish short squeezes.
-Set your flare programs, if desired, and your rocket delay on your kneeboard before you power up the plane. I do this all before battery power, otherwise it won't let you even if you turn the battery back off and engines are off. I plan the program of 4 flares at a time, 3 second interval.
-Double-triple-check your flares, gun ammo. We've had a dodgy crew chief loading us without gun ammo or putting AIM-9Bs on from time to time as a cruel joke.
-Hydras != FFARs. For this I'll run HE pure instead of HE/HEAT mix.
-I could be convinced to change weapon loadout maybe, but without a clearer target location and threat idea, I'm not hot on snakeyes or dive-bombing. (If I were to do an alternate, I'd probably say 2x small tanks, 1x centerline mk84, Hydras on the wings. Dive bomb and rocket pass?)

Any questions, concerns can reply here, but for small stuff or general tactics discussion, the Tiger channel or combat flight plans is more convenient. Any changes made based on feedback will get changed and quoted in thread before go-time.

I am going to recommend an approximately 10 mile race track situated at the purple line.

This will position us approximately 15-20 miles away from the main package, giving them plenty of of time to evac in a GUINEA PIG or ALPACA situation, but not so far off that we couldn't respond to situations in the battle zone. It should also allow us to effectively provide a barrier against aircraft flying from the east without flying within range of known ship positions. By keeping the race track itself less than ten miles, I can stagger my flight to maximize sensor coverage without incurring too much separation.

Sounds good

Springfield Flight - Fuerza Aérea Ecuatoriana - 2112 Combat Squadron - Mirage F1
We are currently a three-ship, if this mission interests you please speak up.
:siren:One player slot available.:siren:

Good afternoon, gentlegoons. This is your recently promoted flight lead, R. Carlos Banderas C., son of acclaimed and blooded FAE pilot Raúl Banderas D., who also flew the Mirage F1. I recently burried my brother, R. Angel Banderas C., lost during the night battle defending against PLA aggressors.

We have been tasked with BAI at AO BOLT, targets being command and support facilities. We hold at COLO until GUACHO is called, indicating SEAD has sufficiently tagged SA-11, HQ-7, and other major threats near our objective. Last known positions of the facilities were provided, but they may have moved and cloud cover could restrict certain attack profiles, so we must play it by ear.

Upon GUACHO:
1/ approach target waypoint in a manner to see around any possible cloud cover
2/ confirm target locations, prioritize west to east
3/ first member attacks, into the wind if possible, rockets first (if carrying them)
3.1/ BDA, second member hits same position with rockets (if carrying them), or if wiped target next nearest
3.2/ BDA, third member hits same position with rockets (if carrying them), or if wiped target next nearest
4/ ditch used rocket pods
5/ first member attacks any remaining targets with bombs, priority west to east
5.1/ second member as above
5.2/ third member as above
6/ egress north past the combat lines, then RTB to SAWG, rejoin at or near COLO if convenient

Upon ALPACA:
Return to COLO, 20kft

Upon GUINEA PIG:
Abort to SAWG, RTB

Loadout
2x R550 Magic 2 IR AAM
4x SNEB (144 rockets total)
4x 400kg Low Drag bombs
-or-
8x 400kg Low Drag bombs

Alternate Runways
There are a couple to the northwest. I will quiz you on them before takeoff.

Route is something like this. Note that there are units further west, which we engaged previously.

Last known target data. Priority is for marked units in box 1 and 2. If we have spare ordnance, or UZI ends up hitting these, look for 3 and 4.

BLUFOR losses:

CNS Aspirante Isanza destroyed by a KH-31 strike, by attacking JH-7s.
ARA Heroina struck by a KH-31 missile, severely damaged. CIWS from nearby ships defeated others.

REDFOR confirmed kills:

1x Type 054 Frigate
6x BUK
2x HQ-7

Supply lines on the highway hit by Springfield.

This is what I have now.

With the crushing lag currently in DCS, we will postpone next week's mission. Sadly, we have to hope that ED puts out a patch. The spikes are absolutely gamebreaking, and we can't tolerate them.
Instead of next saturday's mission, we'll do the Pirmo Victoria WW2 campaign, since without radars and lots of ships, it should be lag free.

That campaign here: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=4048212

Thank you everyone for great flights, and thank you for amazing planning and briefing, it helped bring success.

Likely we'll have to stop using Sea Eagles if CIWS can not defeat them, however.

Panther 1 AAR

Panther 1-1 Yooper
Panther 1-2 Rowen
Panther 1-3 Hyperlynx

While starting up we watched the M2K's squeak past the absolutely packed tarmac (tarmax?).

We did a quick back taxi with Panther 2 behind. I started seeing the lag at this point but figured it was just from all of the aircraft near me. We went with a 10 second spacing for take off to make sure on one ate the neighbors afterburner.

Once at 10NCOLO I started scanning the Ground Radar for targets and located a company of armor, a supply depot, some HQ-7's, a city, and was launched on by an SA-11. I went evasive, Venom 2-1 launched, and then the lag started getting nasty. I would circle, follow a smoke trail with the TGP, try to make a markpoint but it wouldn't take, then I'd be out of my orbit and lose it on the TGP. Then when the datalink share would go through it'd send a bunch at once. I dropped on HQ-7's as well as Hyperlynx. He also dropped on an SA-11. Rowen had the bad luck to drop on thin air, which could have been an offset error or the wrong markpoint. Weather was still tough for the TGP, but better than the past.

What went well

Working with Venom was a great plus and I'd recommend following a similar layout for future missions.
JDAM's are great and I know should be limited in theater, but man, it's a big force multiplier for us.
Close staging was also nice, other than a "too many planes in one spot" fact, it made the op much more convenient from a time standpoint.

What Didn't

Handing off markpoints didn't go well. Deadseed came up with a great method to share the point and then call out the last 3 digits of the LATLON. I will do this next time.
I spent a lot of time head down staring at the FCR or TGP and that nearly got me into trouble.
I should have dropped both of my JDAM's first and then called targets so I could loiter longer and be more maneuverable.

I enjoyed the mission and felt if it wasn't for the lag spikes that Venom and Panther would have had even greater success.

Yeah, shame about the lag, but from the perspective of a low SA striker listening on 262, the SEAD/DEAD communication between Venom, Panther, et al and certainty of passing and hitting targets was night and day this run vs the previous set of front line SEAD and BAI (Daniela's Fury). After one race-track to outrange a surviving SA-11, no real radar threats over the front lines remained up.

is not good.

Is the lag something other servers are experiencing? Has anyone started collecting data on this poo poo it seems almost ever present.

Should we run longer mission slots with less going on? like hour 1 the CAP does their thing, hour 2 the strikers, or some sort of asynch play to limit players (if player count even affects the lag).

The following is an excerpt from the diary of Ford 2-2, Inches

Today is my first combat flight, finally get to stick it to the PLA! I'm so nervous, but it's an honor to finally get the chance to tell the PRC that the Americas will not roll over! Wish me luck!

I don't have the words for what happened today, it was like we flew through some reality distortion. I don't know even how we got back to the ship, if even we had ever left. I should start at the beginning.
The sortie started fine, with Ford 1 starting up their airframes to clear the deck for us, but then things got weird. I was late to the hangar, they had already raised my A-4E to the flight deck and towed it to the catapult. I was so nervous, starting up on the cat with the rest of my wing waiting for me to clear the area, I forgot to close my canopy for launch! I'm so embarrassed, and it was so loud for the whole flight! Luckily, my radio in my helmet closed over my ears so I didn't have too much trouble hearing my flight lead's orders. I also didn't waste time on deck setting up my nav computer, but it wouldn't have mattered much since we were orbiting Mother for so long waiting for the rest of the Scooter Mafia Ford Squadron to take off (I think I heard two planes merged into one? And did somebody really break their neck on launch? I must've been imagining things, it was so loud with the wind) that our nav computers were too confused to do much anyway. Luckily, we had some solid landmarks and we didn't need our waypoints.
It was truly a thing a beauty, so many beautiful aircraft all flying together. I need to work on my formation flying.
Once we got the word to commence the attack, we flew over Mt. Conico, and I swear we fell into some hole in reality. I flew past the rest of my squadron like they were hanging in the air. They were, too! Motionless, I couldn't believe it! Then, about 10km over the water, I blacked out! I must have dreamed the whole thing, nothing made any sense, but it all felt so real! I've been worried about talking to the rest of Ford, I'll just call it nerves. Oh well. We'll show those Chinese bastards what we're made of next time.

For my part, I wasn't sure who was supposed to hit what datalink targets, which I figured had been broadcast to the entire flight. So I sat around waiting to be told which ones to go for, and eventually just asked if I should pick one and start bombing, which I did.

I was expecting "okay, 2 you hit the one at blah blah blah, 3, you hit this other one", so that we wouldn't be doubling up and wasting limited bombs on the same targets. At one point I asked if I should hit the markpoint at xyz altitude, and didn't get a response. I'd intended the altitude as a unique identifier for which markpoint, after realising the transmitting aircraft doesn't get a 500+ number for what they sent.

Mystified that I never got fired on. Maybe I have the lag to thank for breaking the SAM radars. I struggled to maintain correct altitude because of staying mostly on mil power, and had pretty low energy the whole time. If I'd been launched on I would almost certainly have been hosed.

Anyway, it worked out in the end. Nobody died, I blew up two things and one of them was even an SA-11 TELAR, and I ended the mission with plenty of fuel. So that's a win.

This is 100% my fault. When I transmitted I should have called out to one of you and given a 'go! Drop on that'. Except, like you said, I get an indicator that I'm transmitting but I don't know what the number is. In the future we'll use Deadseed's method and I'll call "Data incoming, SA-11, latitude ends in 420". I was definitely task saturated hunting for more targets which didn't help anything.

Our wolfpack arrives far to the west of PLAN supply lanes. So far that we abandon the possibility of interdiction early on. Instead, we'll conduct basic recon on the area, determine what they've sent into the area after we destroyed the convoy 2 days ago.

We steam for 12 hours before we detect anything. A Grisha, steaming northwest towards the channel opening. The Carrera is in position to engage, so she attempts to sneak up behind, up into her baffles. Her captain, a bit of a younger hot head, fires a touch early.

For a few moments it seems like the Grisha wouldn't detect the torpedo rushing at it.

Nevermind.

Undetected, merely 8 miles to the Carrera west is a substantial enemy taskforce. The O'Higgins, at periscope depth 20 miles away, immediately launches a pair of Exocets at the nearest target, a Grisha turning away from the Carrera. The Carrera herself turns south south west, trying to make a bit of distance from the swarm.

The missiles from the O'Higgins are swiftly swatted from the sky by a spray of SAMs. Most of these targets are Grishas, a sizeable ASW Frigate fairly capable at self defense. The Carrera fires another pair, both at closing Grishas, and hits them both, one destroyed and the other damaged. Another pair, one at a Grisha and another at a PLAN minesweeper, the Type 037.

They both go up and under immediately.

The very first target is finally struck by its torpedo and breaks up.

The scenario is now somewhat under control. A Grisha, 12 miles out, is slowly cautiously closing on the Carrera. Farther north, a Tarantul is rushing around to engage the O'Higgins. Her crew obliges it with a torpedo.

With an active only sonar, the Tarantul doesn't even detect the torpedo that kills it.

A short game of cat and mouse is punctuated by a torpedo down the Grisha's throat. It does not evade.

We beat feet and quickly disengage to the far south despite detecting a Grisha and Tarantul pair just a bit farther to the east. All in all, a clean sweep, though the enemy shipping convoy slipped through.

Admiral Ileana Maria Sampaio
South American Combined Armada

Naval Situation Update (27 FEB 10)

To the South American Combined Armada:

Recent operations have had mixed success of late. Through your heroic efforts, we have continued to disrupt enemy supply routes, sink PLAN ships, and push back against the invasion. The bad news is that PLA forces appear to be operating some new types of electronic warfare devices. Long-range signals intelligence has been significantly degraded, and pilots flying near enemy anti-air systems have reported a variety of disabling effects. While casualty reports are still trickling in, a recent A-4 Skyhawk mission is believed to have fallen victim to the new weaponry - the survivors experienced near-total failure of flight and weapon systems. Terrain-Following Radar missions in particular appear to be vulnerable - pilots are forced to either risk crashing into the ground or flying within the combat envelope of enemy SAMs. As a result, all low-level flight operations are restricted until further notice. Any proposed offensive operations will be conducted at sufficient altitudes to provide some modicum of protection for our pilots - this will likely require ongoing coordination between CAP, SEAD, and Strike platforms to be successful. Furthermore, pilots may expect intermittent aircraft grounding until effective countermeasures can be developed and distributed. Defensive counter-air operations will continue as needed.

However, there is some good news to report: Reinforcement efforts are proceeding apace, and pilot training is ahead of schedule. New aircraft such as Super Étendards, C-101 Aviojets, OV-10 Broncos, and MQM-170 drones have joined our ranks, and SACA will be actively searching for opportunities to add additional aircraft to our fleets to replace those that have been lost. Additionally, an Ecuadorian naval group is sailing south to support our fleet in the west, and there are various rumors of imminent naval support in the east.

While we have faced setbacks, it is my belief that the future for the allied nations of South America remains bright. Additionally, it is my pleasure to recognize the following service accolades:

quote:

Fighter Trainee Competition Winner Announced

A merit ceremony was held today at Punta Indio Naval Air Base by the proud graduates of the UK MOD's International Defense Training program. Classes of students have been training to join the ranks of SCAD and SACA pilots defending South America - several recent graduates including "Grunty" and "Inches" have already begun acquitting themselves well on the battlefield. One advanced pilot, call-signed "Teeter" (full name withheld per wartime guidelines), was the winner of the final exam showcase competition, and has earned the prestigious right to continue training as a Qualified Weapon Instructor. Having demonstrated pinpoint accuracy with their A-4 Skyhawk during the iron bombing event, the lieutenant will soon be educating the next class of students in the intricacies of F-4 Phantom aviation. A group of beginner aviators are currently being taught fundamentals in the United States at Holloman AFB, New Mexico. The aircraft, which are still in the process of being refitted for delivery to South America, will be a welcome addition to our arsenal of freedom.

Combat flight training will continue at the Argentine Naval Aviation School (Escuela de Aviación Naval) at Punta Indio Naval Air Base, near Buenos Aires, as well as the Argentine Military Aviation School (Escuela de Aviación Militar) near Córdoba. British instructors are providing coaching on all aspects of advanced fighter aviation, but promise a particular focus on ballistic fundamentals. To accommodate the rapid lesson schedule, the 6th Air Brigade bombing range at Tandil Military Air Base has been reserved for daily usage by the QWIs and the larger International Maritime Training Team.

Capitán de fragata Bernard "Pyg" Larrain Awarded

THE CONDECORACIÓN AL VALOR (2a Clase)

For successful command of a Chilean submarine naval group consisting of the CNS O'Higgins and the CNS Carrera; for naval valor in multiple combat engagements against the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) between the 20th - 26th of February, 2010 with the sinking of seven enemy corvettes, two patrol craft, and two sealift cargo vessels; and for pursuing the interdiction of a critical Chinese supply route supporting the invasion of Punta Arenas, despite overwhelming odds.

This award, similar to the Argentinian HONOR AL VALOR EN COMBATE, the British DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS, or the American NAVY CROSS, denotes exemplary and gallant wartime military service conducted in spite of grave personal risk. It can be awarded multiple times, with successive awards being bestowed at the first class level.

So the MSFS flights have been used to conduct the recon and cargo flights that sustain the combat operations. There's a number of different users who have been doing them. The general idea is that the game master creates an opportunity for a civilian/noncombat flight, one of the commanders organizes the task and finds a pilot to do it, and then a pilot actually flies the mission and reports back.

One recent example would be this one, where Bentai conducted a cargo mission in an Airbus that delivered missiles from Brazil to Argentina. Those missiles can now be used by pilots in a future DCS mission: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=4042524&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=20#post536175108

Another example might be this one, where Shan created a recon mission for a pilot to perform near the combat area. Success in this mission might unveil important information (like where enemy forces are) that we can then use to build future missions: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=4042524&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=18#post535803863

ARMA has been used in a similar way. There's been a number of missions where soldiers all get deployed to a critical site with a mission that would have strategic effects. This might be taking out an enemy radar site, blowing up a missile silo, or defending an allied base. Here's an early mission that was predated by a variety of hints, puzzles, and other things: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=4042524&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=9#post535252494

I think folks are also very open to other simulation games joining if they can be incorporated easily. For example I'm trying to garner some interest in having someone transport supplies around in Euro Truck Simulator 2, because I found a mod of Argentina that seems promising.

I think folks are also very open to other simulation games joining if they can be incorporated easily. For example I'm trying to garner some interest in having someone transport supplies around in Euro Truck Simulator 2, because I found a mod of Argentina that seems promising.

That all sounds amazing (and also like a lot of work), but the Euro Truck thing sounds absolutely delicious.

Our wolfpack arrives far to the west of PLAN supply lanes. So far that we abandon the possibility of interdiction early on. Instead, we'll conduct basic recon on the area, determine what they've sent into the area after we destroyed the convoy 2 days ago.

---

We beat feet and quickly disengage to the far south despite detecting a Grisha and Tarantul pair just a bit farther to the east. All in all, a clean sweep, though the enemy shipping convoy slipped through.

The main point of the submarine attack was to sink the transport ships that are the current lifeline of Punta Arenas PLA advance at AO Bolt, and their escape is surely troublesome. Nevertheless, this blow to PLAN efforts in the area was not only unexpected, but enough to shake the leadership of the PLAN fleets.

Chile and Argentina do not have that many submarines, and their capability of producing more is very limited. To encounter such sunk tonnage in the face of these few boats, the PLAN will focus more of its efforts to Anti-Submarine Warfare.

While the specific types and numbers are not known, it is very likely that various ASW helicopters and airplanes will be brought to the area, and some of the picket ASW surface combatants are reeled back.
Furthermore, intel has picked up several indications of PLAN submarines using comm masts to receive information.

ARMA 3 Tie-In mission, this coming Saturday the 16th, prime time goon mission slot at 2000 UTC.

The HMS Agincourt has turned south again, and this time it is sailing towards South Georgia Island. The island is far from South America, but a former british possession, before PLA takeover, it has now seen extensive build up to serve as a submarine base and a way stop for naval ships.

While it is in PLAN control, the Chinese do not anticipate major offensive operations against it. As such, the Royal Navy has decided to use a Special Boat Service team to be laid onto the islands and to conduct overland hike to attack the PLAN submarine base at Grytviken, one of the few built up areas. In addition, near Mount Carse, the CHinese have built another military housing area on top of old projects started by the Royal Navy some years ago.

Ingame wise this map will be an Arma 3 map called "Djalka". It is the right shape and size as South Georgia, as it used its heightmap and shape. However, Djalka is smaller in scale, with distances being closer to each other. The real South Georgia is about 130 miles long, while this Arma 3 map is only some 10 miles long.
In addition, this Arma map has some roads and buildings that do not exist on the real South Georgia. These will be in-lore some of the Royal Navy designs to fortify South Georgia, and that were taken over by the Chinese and constructed further.

The SBS team aboard HMS Agincourt is getting ready. Expect an overland hike and difficult navigation in an incoming fall snowstorm on South Georgia with poor visibility and challenging conditions, with GPS jamming further hampering use of handheld GPS devices.

The team's task is to cause damage to the submarine pen at Grytviken, and to destroy a radar at the military encampment. Survival of the team is of utmost importance. While the PLAN marines patrol the area, they are unlikely to expect anything to happen. Thus, surprise is afforded to the team. Regardless, the conditions are difficult, and the team has to navigate to its targets and back on foot.

There will be ONE respawn collectively for fallen team members, simulating the back up team of Royal Marines hitting land at the landing site half way through the mission.
Preserve your trooper, don't die needlessly, and adjust mission goals on the fly.

By strength and guile.

Major Mederlock,

Here is your tentative plan.

TASKS:

Primary:
-Cause maximum damage to PLAN submarine facilities at Grytviken

Secondary:
-Degrade PLAN radar at Warrah
-Find targets of interest worthy of destruction

Your time limits are such:

0600: SBS team inserts to set point
0700: Royal Marine Commando team moves in for additional security (Your mid-game respawns)
0800: Board boats for extraction. This time is fairly firm, plus minus 5 minutes.

Proceed to plan.

Task/Commander's Intent

We've been given a tall order, lads and laddettes. The PLA have set up shop with some subs and other assets on South Georgia Island, and we've been tasked with pissing in their bowl of Wheetabix. We are to insert, move decisively, and destroy as many PLA assets as possible while keeping our casualties as limited as possible. We are on a strict timeline with extract arranged to arrive at 08:00 sharp and leave within 5 minutes, so no lagging behind or taking too much time on our tasks can be accepted. Success will rely on leadership being flexible and able to improvise and coordinate on the fly.

Both elements will coordinate for the assault on the sub pen and it's facilities, and then XRAY will proceed to the RADAR site and eliminate it while YANKEE keeps an eye on the main road south of from the mountain ridge lines while moving East. YANKEE will look for targets of opportunity like fuel/ammo depots, logistics bases, or other military installations while acting as a blocking force for any PLA reinforcements from their garrison at Aquara. The RM ZULU element will act as reinforcements in case the operation goes poorly, and will setup an overwatch position over the road and the town of Soto and cover the retreat of the SBS elements, if needed.

Be observant, be crafty, be resourceful. Out of satchels? Utilize explosives/AT weapons gathered from dead PLA. See something that wasn't mentioned in the brief but seems suspicious or important to the PLA? Report it to your element lead and destroy it if you can do so safely. Your leader is dead? Grab his radio and check in with the other Elements. If the plan goes to poo poo, fallback to EMERG FALLBACK and wait for ZULU to arrive nearby and fall in with them. Find some maps or other potentially useful intel? Grab it and tuck it away for later [Take a screenshot and post it itt with a story of how you found it]

NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE, OR WHAT IS HAPPENING, COMMENCE EXFIL TO BE AT EXTRACTION FOR 08:00 . XRAY and YANKEE have a hard time limit to start their exfil at 07:10 at their final targets, ZULU or anyone who has retreated to EMERG FALLBACK must start exfil at best speed by 07:25

The Plan

Both
1. SBS elements arrive at insertion point at 06:00 and move towards WP1
2. 06:15 XRAY/YANKEE in place at STAGE/OVERWATCH, commence attack on Sub pens at Grytviken. YANKEE covers XRAY and clears out any PLA from the heights while XRAY advances to the sub pens and deploys explosives. YANKEE advances into support areas/warehouses and clears them out once their leader deems the timing is right.
3. 06:35 subs, support equipment, supplies, munitions, etc. destroyed, proceed to WP2

XRAY
4a. Proceed with caution through Soto to WP3, use buildings/etc. as cover from PLA elements advancing from main road.
5a. Carry on North to RADAR SITE and destroy it by 07:10
6a. Destroy any targets of opportunity before 07:10
7a. 07:10 Commence Exfil at best speed, very limited time to retreat

Yankee
4b. Cross the highway south and climb the gradual path to the mountain peaks towards WP2
5b. Proceed East along the ridgeline, avoiding skylining yourselves, towards WP3. If XRAY comes under fire in Soto, provide overwatch and covering fire. If visibility is too limited to see the road from the slopes, adjust your course Northwards so the highway is *just* in sight and continue moving East to WP3
6b. Investigate and Destroy potential fuel depot/military facility, keep an eye out for other targets of opportunity, and ambush PLA forces on the main highway to cover XRAY as they blow the RADAR site.
7b. Commence exfil at 07:10

Zulu
4c. 07:00 Insert and immediately proceed to your WP1
5c. 07:05 Get in touch with the other 2 element leaders on the command net and check in on the situation. If either element needs help, get in place with haste and provide support. Likely YANKEE will need your support.
6c. 07:15 Arrive at ROAD OVERWATCH position if neither element requests your help. Send someone with binos or a scope SE to hill 689 to keep an eye E/SE, and if they see anything of interest, like any military installations, ensure they use their camera to document it [Screenshot it for the thread]
7C. 07:25 if at ROAD OVERWATCH, initiate exfil to extraction point with haste, provide some cover for the other two elements if they still need it but don't stick around!

All
07:55-08:05 Extract at designated location, STRAGGLERS WILL HAVE TO BE LEFT BEHIND

Comms Plan

We will be using TFAR and TS3 for communications. Use direct chat to talk one on one with someone nearby, use your short range radio for conversation relevant to your element, and the element leaders will have a LR radio for a command net. Please ensure the TFAR plugin is enabled in TS3 and your keybinds are set up properly before the session :unsmith:

quote:

Dear Gen. Carlos,

As you know, the recent PLA electronic warfare advances have been de-emphasizing the air campaign in favor of ground and naval strikes. This has been putting a lot of strain on our supply chains, which were never strong to begin with. Naval Supply Command believes that we need to start supplementing our air freight and maritime shipping routes with overland trucking. There's two major highways that feed into our areas of operations, Ruta 40 in the west and Ruta 3 in the east - both of them are anchored by major naval weapons depots (Puerto Montt Naval Base, in Puerto Montt, Chile and Puerto Belgrano Naval Base in Bahía Blanca, Argentina respectively). There are a variety of weapons, equipment, food, fuel, and other supplies that are building up at major international ports in the north. The admiralty believes that if we can get civilian cargo companies and independent truckers to begin delivering those goods to our naval bases, then military logistics can take them to where they are ultimately needed.

The initial goal will be setting up the major supply route between Paso de los Libres and Bahía Blanca. This would provide the crucial connection between plentiful American supplies that are in Brazil and final delivery from Puerto Belgrano down to Rio Gallegos and the rail line. However, there is some debate about how best to advertise and promote this project. The funding is in place, but we're experiencing a shortage of semi-truck drivers due to the massive personnel demands of this war. Many of them have either joined one of the allied militaries, have been lured north by the inflated salaries offered in the neutral countries, or they have fled the region entirely. Public Affairs has offered a few different options for the advertising campaign. Take a look at them and let us know which you think would be the most successful.

Sincerely,
Adm. Sampaio

Our first attempt mirrors that of traditional trucking advertisements. We get straight to the point, and target what's important to these people: money.

However, some staff thought that a more thoughtful approach would be better. This one tries to pull on the heart strings a bit, and reminds drivers of their patriotism and duty to family.

The younger designers preferred a more "hip" approach and wanted us to connect with the interests of the new generation. We thought some modern "anime" art and a youth-focused design would help with that.

Finally, there are still some old salts out there who might be called back to service if only we remind them of the true appeal of trucking - the freedom of the road.

The operation with Namibian, South African, and British Special Operators in Angola near Chongoroi went awry last time. Several casualties, including whole UK SBS team getting wiped out, and other teams scrambling in disarray away from the site led to great confusion. Mission was not a success, but at least there were still members alive.

The special operators made their way east towards central Africa. After blending in with locals by hiding most military gear, the white pickup trucks belonged to the street picture like they always had belonged. It was no problem to stay clear, and Chinese control was tenuous anyway.

On 28th February 2010, the stragglers had made it to their pre-arranged panic point.

Lucusse Mission is located in the eastern part of Angola in Moxico province, 145 kilometers south of Luena city. It is among the Luchaze, Luvale, Bunda and Luímbi tribes. In 1932, O. O. Brendenkamp and his wife arrived in Angola at Lobito Bay, and established the Mission. Today, it is a small town and a christian mission. During initial planning operation, it had been designated as one of the assembly points in case the plan would require it. And good thing that, as the team drives in, having barely escaped the Chinese.

As they arrive, the team helps a local out of an overturned truck, and tend to his wounds. While making small talk, it is evident that the PLA has rarely been seen around the area, which puts the team at ease, knowing that out here they could likely find some respite. They ask the man if there is an internet cafe available. A positive answer leads them to a decent sized internet cafe on the side of Highway EN180.

Using pre-determined online dead drop sites, the team establishes communication with the Joint African Command.

The orders are clear. They are to re-attempt the operation, despite their prior failure. For better or worse, Lucusse has an old barn where there are pre-positioned stocks. The team is also informed that they receive reinforcements from South Africans who have a secret site at Lukwate, Zambia. Their trip to Lucusse will take two full days, arriving on the morning of 2nd March, 2010. At that point they will assemble their gear, and head west towards Chongoroi again.

Except, this time the team will have two RG-31s from the forward storage.

The team also has replenished weapon stocks, more direct action gear that the South Africans will bring, and a mortar they can move, with range cards and placement tools. The South Africans will also bring Stinger missiles.

Major Yooper of Namibian SF, your task is to do your utmost to degrade the ASAT site by destroying launchers and radars to ensure it cannot be used. Mitigate all risks, but remember saving the majority of the team is also your goal. The Joint African Command has very little units left in this part of Africa, and wasting these troops will mean there will be a severe limitation to further operations if needed.

Analyze and mitigate risks. Choose from three entry points as to which place your convoy will arrive to Chongoroi. Expect PLA roadblocks and patrols, including helicopters. The sites have heightened posture and likely fortified positions.

You will get precise loadout, vehicle, and weapon list soon.

The following is an After Action Report drafted by the mission commander, who was watching the disaster unfold from the C2 center onboard the submarine via helmet cams and other classified tracking technologies, following the total loss of X-Ray element:

Mission started pretty strong, Yankee and X-Ray kept coordinated and advanced to their first waypoints. X-Ray managed to dodge a sentry post and narrowly avoided a full patrol squad, but Yankee came into contact with that same squad with little time to spare. They had to engage, but they eliminated them quietly without the PLA EI getting a single shot off, and PLA's alert level was still low. They proceeded to the Sub Pens at Grytviken with X-Ray preparing to take out the garrison while Yankee prepared to take out the subs themselves. It was just then that a sever winter squall blew in from the Atlantic. They had to wait a few minutes for the weather to settle again, and they were finally ready to kick things off. Unfortunately, X-Ray took their first KIA (Zeph) shortly after coming into contact with the garrisoned PLA forces due to most of the squad going down to some fire from behind us. They rallied, and after clearing the garrison discovered a PLA AA vehicle not unlike an Avenger. Thankfully Davin is fluent in Chinese and had training on the Avenger SAM system, and was able to work out the functioning of the turret while Mederlock drove. Breaky and Jabby found a PLA Humvee analogue, and after hearing of Yankee's success in taking out their primary target(the subs and a crane), they decided to push to their secondary objectives, the Radar installation and any other opportunity targets.

X-Ray proceeded at best speed along the roads, after which point Breaky and Jabby dismounted after the first bridge to the island with the radar installation. Davin and Mederlock proceeded in the AA vehicle which happened to have a coaxial .50cal for heavy fire support, and the dismounts proceeded ahead of us. It was about this point that they started to hear news that Yankee lead had been killed by a PLA APC, and Vaha and Mederlock eventually established contact after he worked out the specifics of the long range command net radio. X-Ray entered contact with EI close to the radar site, and after a few close calls and a tire change later, they made their final push to the radar site. It was at this point that they suddenly lost contact with Breaky and Jabby. Davin and Mederlock focused on executing the mission first and managed to eliminate the PLA radar with a few missiles from the AA vehicle, which Mederlock took a BDA picture of with a secret prototype of a Google Glass AR system.

It was shortly after this that they found the bodies of Jabby and Breaky, and killed the PLA who got them. The sneaky prick had been operating a Grenade machine gun, which he had set up under some tree cover. Davin and Mederlock were lucky to not have crossed him in their vehicle.. It was at this point that Mederlock, after consulting with acting Yankee lead Vahakyla, decided to call for a fallback to the exfil point. The hornet's nest was stirred, and they were certain to face increasing PLA reinforcements from their garrison near Aquara. As X-Ray pulled back, several PLA helicopters started circling, and this is really where Davin started to shine. The countermeasures were effective at diverting the AA missiles from the SAM, but the .50cal HMG was ruinous to the PLA Hinds. Davin critically damaged anywhere from 3-6 PLA helicopters as the elements started retreating. X-Ray and Yankee had rejoined shortly after coming into contact with the helicoptors, and they proceeded East. This is where another wrinkle in the plan arose.

The Royal Marines Zulu element had come ashore right as X-Ray and Yankee were retreating... and they did not have access to motorized transit. Mederlock and Davin decided to stay behind and link up with them while the rest of the SBS groups proceeded to exfil. After a few minutes of searching, Zulu was in Mederlock's view, and they proceeded East until they found a ditched PLA recon vehicle which Zulu commandeered. At this point, some PLA J-11's flew past overhead and it was clear to everyone that they had to go. Unfortunately, this is where X-Ray lost what had remained of their element. A squadron or two of PLA with indirect fire support happened upon the AA vehicle that Davin and Mederlock were in, and they were one of the first victims of the mortar or GMG fire, losing their lives nearly instantly. What was left of Zulu and Yankee called a full retreat at this point and made their getaway at the exfil point after checking the bodies of the KIA.

What went well
Radio communication [with ACRE radio simulation] was phenomenal... once it was setup. It conflicts with the in-game VOIP so there were some wrinkles to iron out. Once it was figured out, it really helped reduce comms clutter and helped the squad leads and the inter squad communications be more concise. The plan worked out relatively well, but I should have expected more PLA patrols. Finding the AA vehicle and other motorized transport was a huge boon to allowing our secondary objective to be met, and reduced the casualties the helicoptors could inflict by being fast moving targets. All of the squad members did exceptionally well, everyone played their part admirably.

What went poorly
We should have procured an extra vehicle from the sub pen garrison area for the Zulu reinforcements, we likely would've avoided the final PLA groups if we had been able to move quicker. We should also take more care to clear out areas with known enemies before proceeding, so we don't get caught out by that one last wounded guy hiding in the bushes.

WARNING ORDER

Mission Time? No! Risk Analysis time. I want everyone to understand the risks and positions before we rumble in.

We are at YELLOW for this operation. Why? Because our force, existing and threatening PLA forces, provides a fulcrum effect that ties up a disordinate amount of PLA forces. If we become combat ineffective then we cannot project that force and the PLA will divert those assets elsewhere. Preserving your team means keeping your OODA loop shorter than the PLA. Recon, decide, act, and fuckin' scramble.

We are at ISSUE A WARNING ORDER. Let's talk about tentative plan.

1. MISCHIEF - One small element will reach out to a local and either find a juicy target away from the main AO, or threaten a PLA roadblock with the intent to act big and then run. This is to divert the axis of PLA response and hopefully get a rotary response that we can then shoot a Stinger at.

2. MAYHEM - RECON and ATTACK the ASAT site. Ideally this team performs RECON while MISCHIEF is talking with a local or setting up. Mortar team will be used to keep PLA forces suppressed while the main axis goes in. In the event that there is checkpoints we evade or knock them out with mass fire. This could then become MISCHIEF while that element waits for a response. I'd like to remain at the ASAT site for 5-10 minutes MAX.

We have speed on our side and the ability to maneuver. The PLA will be slow and must maneuver by helo, so if we can knock one of those out it should make them think twice about engaging.

QUESTIONS

Where do we put the mortar?
Which Entry point? I'm thinking B as it's geographically closer, but a couple of armored trucks makes A viable for some truck violence.
How do we kill the ASAT?
What does critical targets look like?
Can we mission kill it electrically or by hitting infrastructure?

EDIT : Exit Criteria - PLA is stirred up and angry : We get out.

Chat here or Discord and we'll digest this until we get more intel.

Yankee deployed along with XRay at our insertion point and, after some radio troubleshooting and verifying comms, carried on to our mission. First destination was Yankee WP1 which was a homestead just off of the island’s MSR. Our lead scout spotted someone inside the house as we were a few hundred meters out. I radioed Mederlock to ask our ROE and was advised to keep it quiet until we can mount the assault. Yankee then crossed the road to the north and gave the homestead a “wide berth” (not really, but the best we could do) while keeping a constant coverage on the homestead. As we were moving past the homestead a PLA patrol crested a hill directly in front of us. Yankee was in the middle of a snow covered field with no cover so we had no option but to engage. Due to the crack shot of our operators the entire PLA patrol squad was eliminated in a matter of seconds. Actually, I have to take a moment to commend everyone in my squad on this. As a team we all seemingly picked different targets and as soon as I gave the order to shoot every one of the PLA in front of us were eliminated. Not a single one got the chance to raise their weapon. Just excellent work on a quick reaction ambush.

After the ambush I radioed to Mederlock that we engaged the patrol. He assured us that he heard no gunfire so we figured our cover was not blown. However, the patrol was likely to radio in at set intervals and the lack of a PATROLREP from them would likely blow our cover at some point. He recommended we expedite our movement to WP2.

Yankee approached a ridge and observed a PLA garrison that was protecting the sub pen at Grytviken. I radioed our observation report to XRay and hustled Yankee to WP2. As Yankee approached WP2 I ordered Red team down from the highlands that we were on while I held Blue and Green teams with me (referred to as Cover Element from here on out) as I planned on providing covering fire from the high ground. This is when the winter squall rolled in. Red team sheltered in place waiting for the storm to lift while the cover element attempted to move forward. I personally found myself slipping down the side of a hill but sustained no injuries. Other members of the cover element got separated. As the storm quickly lifted I found myself exposed on a hillside in full view of the sub pen but luckily there was zero PLA around. Red team quickly got to work planting explosives on all both submarines harbored while the cover element went to find a downed squad member who got separated during the squall and stumbled onto a PLA barracks. The cover element cleared the barracks as Red lead, Vahakyla, radioed advising it would be a good idea to destroy the heavy crane at the dock to slow down PLAN logistics. I agreed and told him to blow it. Red team linked back up with the cover element shortly thereafter. XRay advised that they cleared the garrison to the west of the sub pen, procured local transport, and were progressing toward the radar. Yankee was then given orders to proceed to WP3.

At this point it was about 0655. Our exfil was scheduled for 0710. There were concerns about our timetable, but thanks to Blue team’s resourcefulness they were able to procure local transport for Yankee as well. Yankee then sped to WP3 in some sort of amphibious 6 wheeler open topped vehicle. We disembarked near WP3 and climbed the nearest hill to get into an overwatch position on the MSR. Red team almost immediately spotted a UAZ speeding toward the sub pen and I gave the order to light them up. The UAZ patrol was eliminated and as I turned around to look for Blue and Green teams I was killed instantly by a single 30mm round from a PLA IFV.

What happened after this is unknown. From second hand accounts Red team lead took over as acting squad lead. However, Yankee also lost all of Blue and Green teams around this time.

I spawned back into Zulu and after much Arma-ness I found myself linked back up with Red team from Yankee at around Yankee WP1. They were in the process of exfil and I helped provide covering fire on enemy infantry and helo support as we waited for more friendlies to arrive at extract. Extract arrived on time and what remained of the British forces on the island extracted back to the HMS Agincourt.

What Went Well
Radio communication was top notch. Once we got the bugs ironed out the communication between Yankee and XRay was excellent. Mederlock keeping focus on the timetable was also key. We were able to complete our objectives before we hit a ton of resistance. As a team, I think Yankee hit all of our key objectives. We destroyed the sub and provided a screening force to XRay. We did hit heavy resistance but our sacrifice helped buy time for XRay to start extracting. And tactic-wise we were goddamn excellent in my opinion. Our swift ambush of that first patrol, our clearing of that barracks and Red team’s ambush of the UAZ patrol were all perfect. Well done, everyone.

What Went Poorly
From my perspective, nothing within XRay or Yankee’s control went poorly. The plan was solid and we did complete our primary objectives. Sure, a 30mm may have taken my head clean off, but we were expected to hit resistance. And it sounds like extract was called at the right time. Maybe Yankee could have proceeded to WP3 with extra caution. Our timetable kind of forced a swift movement, however. I think for better time management we would have needed to be deployed with vehicles so we could have reached WP1 & WP2 quicker.

Oh, one last thing. Members from my squad were concerned about the lack of proper winter attire provided to us. Some were feeling too much of their skin was exposed to the elements and their gloves not up to the task of the Southern Atlantic elements. I have to express disappointment in the Royal Navy for not learning any lessons from Goose Green in 1984 wrt fighting in South Atlantic weather.

All big server owners I spoke to report that latest DCS patch solved MP performance issues, with some noting even an increase in the norm. As such, expect that we play DCS in TLAW again on the 30th of December.
