I feel that these videos belong here. James Somerton is a fairly well known Youtuber essayist who makes long, (seemingly) intricately researched videos about queer history and characters, quite often focusing on the history of queerness in Hollywood, Nazi Germany and anime. His videos were fairly influential and he was widely cited, he got tens of millions of views, attracted some big advertisers and was reportedly receiving around $170,000 annually from Patreon. He also ran a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding project to create a movie production company and received nearly $100,000 from that. Earlier this week hbomberguy and Todd In The Shadows released videos showing that James had systematically plagiarised most of his content from other sources (who were usually LGBTQ+ writers and creators) and stole their research and analysis without crediting them. He also flat out invented many of the historical 'facts' in his videos, many of which were hilariously and obviously wrong in hindsight. They pretty much killed a multi-million dollar Youtube career overnight. Since then Somerton has deleted a bunch of his videos, closed comments on all the other videos, deleted his socials, shut down his Patreon and his Discord and (so far) gone to ground. So I did some research to figure out why the hell pigeons nest like that and it's because they're descended from rock doves who lay on cliffs. The long and short of it is that if you're gonna live in a tree -- something that can sway with the wind -- you need a nest. Pigeons on the other hand just need a flat surface, so they only need to keep the egg from rolling away as both parents take turns sitting on the egg and they stay with their chicks until nearly fully grown. From what I've read so far, I'm going to guess that pigeons are book-smart instead of street-smart. They're basically the nerds of the bird world.

He desperately wanted to be lauded for being A Very Smart Person but it turns out his own thoughts and opinions were worthless so he had to steal other people's thoughts and opinions Some people tried to point it out every now and then but he's sicc his army of subscribers and them and they'd scream HOMOPHOBE at the complainers until they were run off the internet, which is why HBG and Todd had to bring a lot of receipts

It would have been slightly better, but so much of his stuff was complete word-for-word reading of others' texts that it wouldn't have been actually OK. Or he'd change "gay" for "queer" in a sentence and keep everything else the same, the kind of copying of homework you wouldn't even see in high school. And when he did write original content, it was just piles of misogyny. A fantastically broken-brained person.
