My cousin just told me his pup Sadie passed today. Something was wrong the past week or so and she was struggling and they went to the vet and found a tumor on her spine. She was just 8. I’m sad. We’ve had three German Shepherds in the family and they’ve all been amazing dogs and cancer can eat a loving dick.

Incidentally we do actually work on cancer in dogs - not as a primary target, but since dogs have no rights to privacy it's super easy to share and publish, while still being similar enough to human cancers to be useful. It also helps that one of our researchers started out as a veterinarian before she somehow drifted into bioinformatics; she has contacts with a biobank of breast cancer samples from dogs. (Many of the dogs survived! Breast cancer is apparently reasonably treatable in dogs these days.)

I know part of it is German Shepherds are predispositioned to various forms of cancer, so the really sad part is my cousin went through almost the exact same thing with their previous German Shepherd back in late 2017, a retired police dog named Hana, who was an awesome story herself. She was a stray they found on the street, somehow ended up going through training to be a drug detecting dog, did that for a few years, then retired to a life of lounging around. She also went from being fine to crossing the bridge in a very short time (Less than a week), and my childhood dog (A German Shepherd/wolf mix) had the same thing too. We both viewed each others dogs as our own, so it sucks. Anyway, in other fartknocker news, I finally went and updated my resume and my Indeed profile tonight. I'll probably be updating other job places I used over the course of the week and maybe start applying for stuff soon. It may not seem like much, but trust me when I saw this is a huge step for me mentally. The other person who does the same role as me is probably leaving at the end of this week, but hasn't told our boss because how much she's been hosed over the last few months, and at this point everyone in our department is totally okay with watching things burn to the ground. I've told the handful of my friends at this place who might have been tapped to replace her not to even consider taking the role unless they get promised both the specialist title and a raise, since that was one of several things that got hosed up for the previous person. However, it's started to filter back to me that management doesn't want to do that, nor have they made any effort at all to bring in a replacement or start training one, even though we said that needed to start nearly a month ago. By next week, I'll be doing a job by myself that really needs like 5 people. It's insane and dumb, but I'm okay, cause I'm gonna do the absolute minimum. I'm gonna let poo poo pile up and get hosed up and direct every angry call or email to my manager and basically be "I told you we needed more people last December, then again in April, and September, and November" and I fully plan to leave the biggest, deepest, stinkiest pile of poo poo for her to clean up whenever it is I leave, probably some time in January.
