imessage on android redux

apparently you can register a device as imessage capable, and then send/receive imessages with a shim service. notably, they also claim this does not store and forward messages, and the end-to-end encryption is on-device.

what's gonna happen is that apple is going to blacklist phone numbers and/or icloud accounts using this service and then android users will be forever stuck on lovely phones.

yeah you still need unique device and user IDs at various points in the process and Apple is going to (rightly) claim that one iPhone being logged into 10,000 iCloud accounts at once is suspicious behavior they are not required to put up with

I remember having to copy some real hardware identifiers from an old macbook air to get imessage working on a hackintosh back in the day. So yeah.

The binary that generates this “validation data” is highly obfuscated. pypush sidesteps this issue by using a custom mach-o loader and the Unicorn Engine to emulate an obfuscated binary. pypush also bundles device properties such as the serial number in a file called data.plist, which it feeds to the emulated binary.

quote:

When making an IDS registration request, a binary blob called “validation data” is required. This is essentially Apple’s verification mechanism to make sure that non-Apple devices cannot use iMessage.

Warning: In order to generate the “validation data”, pieces of information about the device such as its serial number, model, and disk UUID are used. This means that not all validation data can be treated equivalently: just like with Hackintoshes, the account age and “score” determine if an invalid serial can be used, or if you get the “customer code” error.

lol, he's having to cop info from real devices to make all this work. good luck with that.

are you confusing real people with internet posters? because the only people i've heard complain about all of the bubble poo poo irl are techbro (or wanna be techbro) android users

Nah, people get legit annoyed when an android user forces them to use sms with low-quality media. And zoomers get bullied over it.

internet yeah, literally never encountered the conversation irl, but on the internet it is like 95% apple fanboys going on about it. and it makes some level of sense since no one normal person who is not an apple person is aware of it, what with apple just serving up a degraded service with no color distinction to android users.

don't remind me, so loving dumb.

like, how hard was it to just cave and put an actually end-to-end encrypted client on android and whatever else? restrict animemooji or whatever it's called to those paying for the privilege, add an apple tv ad at top, let people actually communicate with each other.

for normal people rcs is of course moot, but it is such a silly way of doing things in 2023 and was as a standard dead in the water until apple decided to make it a thing.

huh ok. i honestly see far more android fans online complaining about imessage and/or claiming there are a shitload of apple fanboys out there mocking them than i actually see apple fanboys doing this. i'm not saying it doesn't happen, just hasn't come up much in my online circles.

i know my father in law complains that his sister and him have trouble messaging each other high quality photos but they're both on android. we keep telling them to just use whatsapp since that's what the rest of that side of the family uses for everything so maybe that's why the imessage stuff doesn't come up in the first place.

as for my friends, they are disgusting apple fanboys so we all use imessage exclusively.

i mean, sounds good to me, in that the only people who would first-order care are iphone users valuing people by, let's be honest, money spent. second-order some teens would be bullied, but the kind of person who cared (the iphone user here) probably would have bullied them in some way anyway.

you can get that binary from an os update image, i guess it's kind of a gray area

looking through his extractor thing though reminds me of a lot of the bullshit i had to do to keep a hackintosh running. i gave up somewhere around 2018

honestly i don't know what the android people are complaining about, if you have a contact that has both imessage and sms (with a different number, even), messages will combine it all into one thread

who gives a gently caress what color the bubble is. once RCS rolls out just make everything grayscale, bing bong problem solved
