You could probably call it cultural, but it's more of a deference thing. He doesn't want to embarrass the franchise he's currently a part of, I think it's as straightforward as that. If Ohtani genuinely considers the very bland comments Dave Roberts made (yes we met a few days ago, I thought it went well, he's amazing, he's his own man it's up to him) to be a disqualifying leak, then lol ok I guess. I'd hardly consider that a leak or novel information on negotiations. Is he really that much of a diva/narcissist? I've always taken Ohtani's insistence to be pure (and intelligent!) business and image management on his part. He gains zero benefit from being publicly linked to a team he has no intention of going to. It's all downside, fans excited at reports of his possible arrival now feeling spurned. He's one of the few guys who sells tickets by himself on the road because of how widespread his popularity is. I'd also make an easy, no-cost demand to limit the extent to which any fanbases feel Decision'd
