Yeah, apparently at least at the beginning they didn't pay any of their guests for their appearances. At first glance that didn't sound like a big deal, but then you realize some of the topics span multiple episodes recorded on multiple days, and I can see why people might want to be reimbursed for their time. I do think that they now pay the guests something, but at least initially I don't think they were doing so.

Podcasting seems to operate in a grey area and I think most of the time its one person goes on a podcast in exchange for the host being a guest on the other person's podcast later on. And then some of the other (bigger, famous) ones its like a talk show in that for exchange of being on the podcast, they advertise the new book/movie/TV show

My ADHD decided that it preferred university lecture audiobooks to podcasts for about a year, so I just now starting a year long back log of episodes. I'm on the Liver King live episode and they immediately pinged something I had recently learned. Homo Erectus long bone fossils show evidence of Vitamin A poisoning because they actively hunted African carnivores and ate their livers. These fuckers were hunting lions and eating their livers as a status thing, maybe. Homo Erectus also possibly committed a baboon genocide in Kenya for "because gently caress baboons" reasons. If the Liver King with murdering baboons with stone weapons for their livers, I'd maybe watch his TikTok. Robert should do a Behind the Prehistoric Bastards. I'm just terrified he'd become obsessed with the idea of atlatls.

Finally listened to the Holy Rollers episodes. Just lol at the old lady going to town to summon an armed lumberjack posse, and everyone collectively going "ohhhhhhh, that explains it" when they saw the cult leader's huge dong.

Michael Lewis is having a very bad year and it’s hilarious to me. The one thing I wish they would have touched on about the Blind Side stuff is that Oher’s former coach who made that comment is Hugh Freeze, who committed a whole bunch of recruiting violations getting multiples seasons of wins taken away, left the school banned from postseason play for 2 years, and most hilariously, got fired because he couldn’t stop calling escorts from his work phone Freeze was out of coaching for 3 years before coming back thanks to everyone’s favorite private school run by hypocritical assholes, Liberty University. He is a massive piece of poo poo and I hate him. edit: Jamie loftus is the best guest because the dynamic between her and Sophie is wonderful when teaming up against Robert and shes absolutely the only guest who would force Robert to cut in with a warning because they went for an extended Frasier chat DC Murderverse fucked around with this message at 08:30 on Dec 6, 2023 |

I don't see how Lewis's reputation ever recovers from this. Like, his continually defending SBF at this point is worse than people who still think Elon Musk is a visionary genius (and that's saying something). Also, at the image of SBF playing video games while on a call with Anna Wintour. I'm a male poster on somethingawful.com and even I know who she is. While watching that clip, I am fairly sure that this is a direct descendant from the toy commercials that were omnipresent on tv in the 90s and 2000s https://youtu.be/IufSKJ5ty4g?si=cVzUU-mAlAJWdRsp The only difference is that tv commercials had an already established format to stick to. Just as much attention grabbing material and stuff meant to make kids stare at the screen

What was the not-game that SBF was addicted to? All I can find is League of Legends, and the idea that SBF was ripping off people while playing cookie-clicker makes me smile. Storytime Battles?

Gotta say, as much as I enjoyed the episode overall, I was pretty sick of Sophie and Jamie constantly jerking off the Devil Wears Prada lady. Like, yeah, she's #girlboss or whatever, but she's still a stuck up pretentious 1%-er, and anybody else like that would be subject to much roasting by the BtB crew.

Snuffman posted:What was the not-game that SBF was addicted to? All I can find is League of Legends, and the idea that SBF was ripping off people while playing cookie-clicker makes me smile. That's a story in itself. Storybook Brawl was a card-based auto-battler where you play as a bunch of public-domain fantasy characters. It was created by three guys who all used to be professional Magic: The Gathering players and a former lead designer on Hearthstone, and it was actually a lot of fun. It was free to play and in early access on Steam. You'd set up a bunch of cards and mechanics, then watch them slam into the other player's lines like a Rube Goldberg machine. It apparently got its hooks so deep into SBF that he had FTX buy it and roll it up into their newly-announced gaming vertical. That immediately ruined the game's reputation; I watched its review average on Steam tank over the course of a single afternoon, particularly after at least one of the original designers went on Twitter to toe the FTX company line. It went from one of the most promising new indies of 2022 to eating dirt, and they shut down its servers in May of this year. Edit: I guess if you ever played Storybook Brawl, that anecdote from Lewis does get a little funnier, because it is not a game that demands an intense clarity of focus.

FlamingLiberal posted:Has Michael Lewis never heard of D&D before? He’d probably gush about how it’s a game of infinite strategy and creativity crossed with luck… and then it comes out that SBF was either playing Warrior or whatever the D&D community considers the easiest class to play (and still had a less than great build), or he went with Wizard and very clearly had no idea what he was doing to anyone with any actual experience playing.

His book on the pandemic and the CDC (The Premonition) was a real banger. He even made outstanding short audiobooks on seemingly mundane topics like weather forecasting (The Coming Storm) and youth sports (Playing to Win). Alas.

So I think if you go back and reread "The Premonition" you might find some disturbing things. Specially, one of the heroes of the book, Charity Dean, was (from the books perspective) cruelly cast aside by Governor Gavin Newsome for the "monstrously incompetent" Sonia Angell, because Dean was white and blonde, and Angell was not. In general Michael Lewis is a very engaging writer who knows how to make real life read like a movie script. But life is not really like that. In this case, I'm kind of surprised that Dr. Angell didn't sue Lewis for defamation. Yes, there were things that got screwed up on her watch and she resigned for those in August 2020 (presemably also for other reasons given that it was August 2020). But "monstrously incompetent" is a high bar that was certainly reached by some people in the pandemic, and in the midst of racial accusations, it's... yeah.

Yeah I was definitely yelling at the podcast during that part. Also, goddamn that Radium Girls story was bleak. I was loosely familiar with it, but had no idea it got as far as "these ~*women*~ are obviously making poo poo up; it's totally coincidental that everyone working this one kind of job is starting to die in this unprecedented, unspeakable way!" Followed by the company stealing their bones

rotinaj posted:The part that gets me is the woman who was picking shards of her own jawbone out of her mouth I don't think it was bone from her skull coming out of the mouth, it was pieces of jawbone chipping off and working their way out. The body will eventually expel most foreign objects that aren't inside the abdominal cavity - it's fairly common for someone with a bullet, wood splinter, or bone chip to find that object eventually working it's way out through the skin. Usually starts as a painful lump, and will eventually just pop out.
